The concept of cell adhesiveness was analyzed by looking for correlations between the adhesive behavior and measurable biological properties of different cell populations. Ten established lines of melanoma cells were assayed for passive deformability (by micropipet aspiration), active spreading (by measuring the height/diameter ratio after incubation on different surfaces), density and mobility of concanavalin A binding sites (by quantitative analysis of fluorescence microscopic images), spontaneous and concanavalin A-mediated agglutination (by measuring the number of cell conjugates resisting

Sexual activity is a common yet poorly understood aspect of athletes' lives, frequently surrounded by cultural beliefs and traditional practices that lack consistent scientific support. Despite widespread assumptions that sexual activity impairs athletic performance or recovery, empirical evidence remains fragmented and often contradictory. This narrative review synthesizes current literature examining the physiological, psychological, and contextual effects of sexual activity on athletic performance and post-exercise recovery. Mechanistic pathways involving hormonal fluctuations, autonomic ne

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (<37 weeks of gestation) occurs during critical stages of odontogenesis and is associated with developmental defects in dental hard tissues. Enamel hypoplasia, enamel hypomineralization, and structural dentin alterations may compromise esthetics, function, and long-term oral health outcomes. However, the nature and extent of these defects and their underlying mechanisms have not been comprehensively investigated.
OBJECTIVE: To map and evaluate the available evidence regarding developmental defects of enamel and dentin in individuals born preterm, identify proposed pa

BACKGROUND: Executive function (EF) is a heterogeneous neuropsychological construct, and impairments in EF dimensions represent a core aspect of psychopathology in schizophrenia that varies across individual patients. Currently, how this inter-individual variability characterizes schizophrenia subgroups, along with their distinctions in clinical characteristics and prognostic outcomes, remains unclear.
METHODS: Three EF dimensions (inhibitory control, working memory, cognitive flexibility) were assessed in the main sample (N = 329), its follow-up subset, and an independently "recurring local

Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopies are essential for detecting and treating various digestive tract problems. While typically safe, these treatments can entail the risk of severe adverse events (SAEs), especially in individuals with a low body mass index (BMI). The current study aimed to evaluate whether post-endoscopy SAEs are more common in patients with low BMI and find risk factors for serious adverse outcomes in Saudi Arabian patients from Khamis Mushait, Aseer region, Saudi Arabia. The data of 398 adult patients with abdominal endoscopies between April and November 2023 were analyzed. Pat

INTRODUCTION: Van der Woude Syndrome (VWS) is an autosomal dominant disorder responsible for 2% of all syndromic orofacial clefts (OFCs) with IRF6 being the primary causal gene (70%). Cases may present with lip pits and either cleft lip, cleft lip with cleft palate, or cleft palate, with marked phenotypic discordance even among individuals carrying the same mutation. This suggests that genetic or epigenetic modifiers may play additional roles in the syndrome's etiology and variability in expression. We report the first DNA methylation profiling of 2 pairs of monozygotic twins with VWS. Our goa

Background: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are prevalent in China. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, damp-heat (DH) syndrome is common in chronic liver disease. However, the biological characteristics related to quantitative diagnosis remain to be determined. This study aimed to identify the consistent alterations in the gut microbiota associated with DH syndrome in patients with CHB or NAFLD. Methods: A total of 405 individuals were recruited, of which 146 were participants who met the consistent TCM diagnosis by three senior TCM

The operation of radial keratotomy is undergoing evolution and development. A few hundred thousand radial keratotomy procedures have been performed during the past decade by approximately 10% of the ophthalmologists in the United States. Clinical and laboratory data have now defined a relative level of safety and effectiveness for the procedure. Published data indicate that radial keratotomy usually achieves partial improvement in uncorrected visual acuity in patients with non-progressive low and moderate amounts of myopia. Undercorrection occurs commonly, and the amount of correction cannot b

BACKGROUND: Given its high mortality and broad societal impact, the COVID-19 pandemic is arguably one of the most consequential public health crises of the twenty-first century. Although previous studies have identified several genes associated with COVID-19 susceptibility, relatively little is known about the genes contributing to severe COVID-19, including their evolutionary histories. In the current study, we analyzed IL-4, TLR2, CCL2, and SLC11A1-immunity genes that have previously been implicated in severe COVID-19 and other immune-related diseases-in globally diverse populations from the

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), as common genetic variations, can influence biological processes. Identifying these variations is crucial for recognizing high-risk subgroups, guiding preventive strategies, and enabling personalized management. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between SNPs and survival, thereby identifying genetic profiles associated with increased risk. Methods: We included seropositive patients with Chagas disease who had a disease duration of >20 years and no comorbidities. DNA was extracted. A SNP panel focusing on genes involved in cardiac

BACKGROUND: In Plasmodium vivax malaria, the Duffy Binding Protein (DBP), a key erythrocyte binding-like (EBL) protein, enables invasion of DARC (Duffy Antigen/Receptor for Chemokines) positive reticulocytes. Another EBL member, the erythrocyte binding protein 2 (EBP2, also known as EBP/ DBP2), shares structural features with DBP, suggesting a role in erythrocyte invasion. P. vivax genomes may harbour multiple ebl gene copies, though their functional role is unclear. Considering DBP and EBP2 as key vaccine candidates, this study investigates copy number variation (CNV) in these two ebl genes a

Cancers of the alimentary tract are, collectively, amongst the major causes of morbidity and deaths from cancer across the world today. Of the 10 million new cases of cancer diagnosed in 2000, about 2.3 million were cancers of the pharynx, oesophagus, stomach or colorectum. Nevertheless, epidemiological studies indicate that cancers of the digestive organs are also amongst the most susceptible to modification by dietary factors. International variations in incidence suggest that round three quarters of all sporadic colorectal cancers are attributable to diet. Even within the relatively uniform

Opioids, reported originally to bind to specific receptors in the brain, now also appear to bind to receptors on blood cells. The high prevalence of anemia among chronic opioid users leads us to propose that chronic opiate use results in elevated mu opioid receptor levels on human erythrocytes and that these receptor changes may affect erythrocyte membrane properties. Blood samples from 17 opioid-dependent subjects (based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition or DSM-IV) and 15 drug-free controls were assayed for mu opioid receptors on erythrocytes using a fl

BACKGROUND: Current VMAT planning workflows for prostate cancer primarily depend on conventional dose-volume criteria specified at discrete dose or volume points. These point-based objectives, however, do not necessarily lead to globally optimal, patient-specific treatment plans. While radiobiological models such as Tumor Control Probability (TCP) and Normal Tissue Complication Probability (NTCP) can provide more meaningful, individualized targets, previous implementations have either employed these for plan evaluation or integrated biological objectives without providing a comprehensive set o

Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) is a potent stimulator of bone resorption, and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of high bone turnover and osteoporosis. IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) is a competitive inhibitor of IL-1beta effects and the biological effects of IL-1beta are therefore proportional to the ratio IL-1beta/IL-1ra. The coding regions of IL-1beta were examined for sequence variations by SSCP and sequencing after polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of genomic DNA. Three previously described polymorphisms (C(-511)-T, G(3877)-A and C(3954)-T) in the IL-1beta gene were determined by res

Marriage between biological relatives is a social custom with a long history in many parts of the world. Today, hundreds of millions of individuals live in consanguineous families. The offspring of consanguineous parents are more likely to have the same two alleles (homozygosity) by descent. In consanguineous family with BRCA1/2 gene mutations, an offspring is more likely to be BRCA1/2 homozygous. The consequences of BRCA1/2 mutation homozygosity in humans are unknown. In knockout mice, BRCA1 or BRCA2 homozygotes die as embryos. Because tumor suppressor genes are conserved and less species-spe

BACKGROUND: Study of the relationship between skin test results and IgE antibody levels is seriously hampered by the use of conventional allergen extracts because the precise amount of relevant allergen for each patient is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to investigate skin reactivity with purified major allergens and to assess the relation with serum levels of IgE antibodies and to determine which additional factors contribute to the skin test result.
METHODS: We used five purified major allergens (Der p 1, Der p 2, Fel d 1, Lol p 1, and Lol p 5) in skin tests, RASTs, and histam

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cancer are both age-related conditions, yet numerous large-scale epidemiological studies have consistently documented an inverse association, with individuals diagnosed with cancer exhibiting a reduced risk of AD and vice versa. Although this relationship has been replicated across diverse populations, its biological basis remains poorly understood. To address this gap, the present study applies a framework that integrates locus-level genetic correlation (rg) with genetically regulated gene expression to clarify the molecular factors contributing to the inverse epi

BACKGROUND: Various therapeutic options are available for the treatment of Crohn's disease (CD). About 30%-40% patients experience primary non-response, and 20%-30% secondary loss of response to biological therapy. Predicting therapeutic response is challenging and an area of active research. Gut microbiota has emerged as an important player in the pathogenesis of CD and also appears to be a promising biomarker for predicting therapeutic response.
AIM: To systematically review the literature on the current status of gut microbiota as a tool to predict response to treatment in adults with CD.
