Understanding differences in HIV testing among US adults is a crucial step for HIV prevention. This study used cross-sectional data to assess whether HIV testing varies across sexual orientation subgroups and by important psychosocial factors. Data were from the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III; n = 36 309, response rate = 60.1%), a nationally representative survey of the US non-institutionalized adult population. Using logistic regression, we examined HIV testing among heterosexual concordant, heterosexual discordant, gay/lesbian, and bisexual

BACKGROUND: Despite knowledge that some people engage in same-sex sexuality without espousing a sexual minority identity, this has rarely been studied in women.
METHODS: Heterosexual women aged 20 to 44 who indicated one or more female sex partners in the past year were compared to those with less recent female sex partners, and to bisexual, homosexual, and exclusively heterosexual women using 2002 US National Survey of Family Growth data.
RESULTS: Compared to exclusively heterosexual women, heterosexual women with a past-year female sex partner were significantly more likely to smoke tobacc

Research shows that sexual minorities are at greater risk for illicit substance use and related harm than their heterosexual counterparts. This study examines a group of active drug users to assess whether sexual identity predicts increased risk of substance use and harm from ecstasy, ketamine, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and crack. Structured interviews were conducted with participants aged 15 years and older in Vancouver and Victoria, BC, Canada, during 2008-2012. Harm was measured with the World Health Organization's AUDIT and ASSIST tools. Regression analysis controlling for age, gender, e

BACKGROUND: Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) associated with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is the most common malignancy in patients with AIDS. It has been most commonly reported in white homosexual men, though a few cases have been reported in blacks.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all HIV-1 seropositive patients with biopsy-proven KS seen at Howard University Hospital between February 1985 and June 1995.
RESULTS: Of the 73 patients identified, 66 (90%), 4 were white, 2 were Hispanic, and 1 was of unidentified race. The median age was 32 years. Forty-eight (66%) were h

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems (MHP, like depression/anxiety) and health and risk behaviours (HRBs) are more common among sexual minority adolescents (SMA) than in heterosexual peers. Limited studies have examined the co-occurrence of poor mental health and HRBs, if co-occurrence differs by sexual identity, and associated risks for self-harm and attempted suicide in adolescents.
METHODS: This study included 10,233 adolescents aged 17 years (51% female/11% sexual minority) from the UK-wide Millennium Cohort Study. Sexual identity, MHP, seven HRBs (like regular smoking, drug use and sexual

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence from general population studies suggests that lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults are more likely to experience adverse cardiovascular outcomes relative to heterosexuals. No studies have examined whether sexual orientation disparities exist in biomarkers of early cardiovascular disease risk.
PURPOSE: To determine whether sexual orientation disparities in biomarkers of early cardiovascular risk are present among young adults.
METHODS: Data come from Wave IV (2008-2009) of the National Longitudinal Study for Adolescent Health (N=12,451), a prospective national

PURPOSE: To explore the relationship of sexual orientation and gender to four sets of factors: (a) family history, (b) incarceration, (c) substance use, and (d) depression and suicide, in a population of homeless adolescents.
METHODS: A sample of homeless adolescents was recruited in Portland, Oregon and assessed using semi-structured interviews at baseline, three months and six months. A total of 532 youths (216 females and 316 males) provided data on sexual orientation and other variables. Heterosexual (n = 391) and non-heterosexual youths (n = 141) were compared on all sets of factors, pri

Our aims were: (1) to characterize gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and transgender (TG) populations using internet-based self-sampling services in the TESTATE project or attending community-based STI/HIV voluntary counselling and testing (CBVCT) services as alternative strategies to formal HIV testing within the Spanish national health system, and (2) to identify factors associated with repeat use of the same screening strategy from November 2018 to December 2021. Demographic, health, and behavioral characteristics of users using complementary strategies were analyzed

We report here a summary of the data obtained from two HIV-1 antibody counseling and testing sites in Minneapolis-St. Paul for the first 48 months of operation (24,911 persons tested). The HIV-1 antibody seroprevalence rate for all persons tested was 5 percent. The highest seroprevalence rates were in male homosexual/bisexual intravenous drug users (23 percent) and homosexual/bisexual men (13 percent). There was a significant decrease in the HIV-1 antibody seroprevalence rate among clients during the 48-month period from 14 percent in the first six months to 3 percent in the last six months. T

AIM: Despite evidence on higher risk for homelessness and worse mental health in sexual minority (SM) adolescents, no study has examined these associations using nationally-representative data in the UK. This study examined inequalities in the prevalence of past homelessness by sexual identity, and whether rates of poor mental health and health-risk behaviours (HRBs) differ by sexual identity and past homelessness in adolescents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the age 17 sweep of the UK-wide Millennium Cohort Study (N = 10,232, 51% female, 21% SM). Mental health was assesse

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is a critical and preventable global threat to public health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and gender equality. Studies have shown that sexual violence among young people in Sweden is prevalent, with lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals facing greater exposure than their heterosexual peers do. Research has also indicated that nonbinary youth report high levels of sexual violence. However, population-based studies in Sweden on sexual violence across gender identities and sexual orientations among those aged 16 to 29 years remain limited.

Youth who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and who identify with other sexual orientations (LGB+) are at higher risk for illicit drug use and have higher rates of mental illness. The current study examined the prevalence of illicit drug use among LGB+ persons and assessed the moderating effect of mental illness. Cross-sectional data from the 2015, 2017, and 2019 Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System were aggregated. The outcome was any reported use of cocaine, inhalants, heroin, methamphetamines, ecstasy, or hallucinogens. The primary exposure was self-reported sexual orientation category (i.e.
