The effect of active vitamin D supplementation on body weight and composition: A meta-analysis of individual participant data.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Obesity is associated with vitamin D (VitD) deficiency. However, previous studies showed mixed effects of VitD (25-hydroxyVitD/calcidiol) supplementation on body weight. The biological actions of VitD require the hydroxylation of inactive VitD into active VitD (1.25-dihydroxyVitD/calcitriol). This step is highly regulated; therefore, supplementing with inactive VitD might not be sufficient to overcome the potential adverse health effects of VitD deficiency. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review and individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis of d

Role of raising the upper limb of the non-rising side when performing rising movements from bed.

Rising movements from bed comprise an important aspect of recovery from the bedridden state; however, they have not been sufficiently investigated using motion analysis studies. In particular, the effect of using the upper limb of the non-rising side before waist flexion on rising movements remains to be analyzed; this study aimed to clarify this effect. Accordingly, motion analyses were performed on rising movements under two constraint conditions, namely raising the upper limb of the non-rising side (upper limb use-condition) and keeping it in contact with the pelvis (upper limb non-use-cond

Chronic expanding hematoma of the left erector spinae muscle after stereotactic body radiotherapy for renal cell carcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hematomas that slowly increase in size for more than 1 month after the initial hemorrhage are referred to as chronic expanding hematomas. Chronic expanding hematoma can also occur after radiosurgery; however, there have been no reports about chronic expanding hematoma in the trunk after stereotactic body radiotherapy. We report a case of chronic expanding hematoma of the left erector spinae muscle after stereotactic body radiotherapy for renal cell carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old Japanese male complained of back pain 7 years after stereotactic body radiotherapy for ren

Neuropathology and molecular diagnosis of Synucleinopathies.

Synucleinopathies are clinically and pathologically heterogeneous disorders characterized by pathologic aggregates of α-synuclein in neurons and glia, in the form of Lewy bodies, Lewy neurites, neuronal cytoplasmic inclusions, and glial cytoplasmic inclusions. Synucleinopathies can be divided into two major disease entities: Lewy body disease and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Common clinical presentations of Lewy body disease are Parkinson's disease (PD), PD with dementia, and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), while MSA has two major clinical subtypes, MSA with predominant cerebellar ataxia an

Asprosin is associated with anorexia and body fat mass in cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Increasing evidence suggests that many adipokines are involved in cancer-related anorexia and cachexia syndrome (CACS), although the underlying mechanism remains to be clarify. Asprosin is a new peptide hormone mainly secreted by white adipose tissues that can increase appetite and body weight. In this cross-sectional study, we tested whether asprosin may intervene in the development of CACS. METHODS: The fasting plasma asprosin levels were determined via enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay. Anorexia was determined using the anorexia/cachexia subscale (A/CS) of the functional assessme

Aspects of the non-pharmacological treatment of irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal conditions. It represents a significant healthcare burden and remains a clinical challenge. Over the years IBS has been described from a variety of different perspectives; from a strict illness of the gastrointestinal tract (medical model) to a more complex multi-symptomatic disorder of the brain-gut axis (biopsychosocial/psychosomatic model). In this article we present aspects of the pathophysiology and the non-pharmacological treatment of IBS based on current knowledge. Effects of conditioned stress and/or

Associations between body image changes and modifiable behavioral variables among university students in the context of COVID-19 pandemic.

Although previous studies have already examined pandemic-era behavior changes, there are still unanswered questions related to complex and sensitive topics such as body image, that can be answered by exploratory contextual analysis. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in body image and explore its associations with modifiable behavioral variables among university students in the context of COVID-19 pandemic, controlling by sex and age. This cross-sectional study assessed body image perception both retrospectively (before the pandemic) and during the pandemic, as well as behavioral fa

Diminished ketone interconversion, hepatic TCA cycle flux, and glucose production in D-β-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase hepatocyte-deficient mice.

OBJECTIVE: Throughout the last decade, interest has intensified in intermittent fasting, ketogenic diets, and exogenous ketone therapies as prospective health-promoting, therapeutic, and performance-enhancing agents. However, the regulatory roles of ketogenesis and ketone metabolism on liver homeostasis remain unclear. Therefore, we sought to develop a better understanding of the metabolic consequences of hepatic ketone body metabolism by focusing on the redox-dependent interconversion of acetoacetate (AcAc) and D-β-hydroxybutyrate (D-βOHB). METHODS: Using targeted and isotope tracing high-re

Differences in vertebral morphology around the apical vertebrae between neuromuscular scoliosis and idiopathic scoliosis in skeletally immature patients: a three-dimensional morphometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent morphological analyses of vertebrae in patients with scoliosis have revealed three-dimensional (3D) deformities in the vertebral bodies. However, it remains controversial whether these deformities are secondary changes caused by asymmetrical vertebral loading or primary changes caused by aberrant asymmetrical vertebral growth. Furthermore, the difference in vertebral morphology between scoliosis with different pathogeneses remains unclear. This study was aimed to investigate the difference in the coronal asymmetry of vertebral bodies between neuromuscular scoliosis (NS) in D

Association of compliance-normalized airway and transpulmonary mechanical power with mortality in PARDS.

UNLABELLED: The prognostic significance of mechanical power (MP) and the optimal normalization strategy in pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS) remains uncertain. We evaluated the association between airway and transpulmonary mechanical power normalized using different strategies and 28-day mortality in children with PARDS. In this multicenter retrospective observational study, 128 invasively ventilated subjects with PARDS were included from four tertiary pediatric intensive care units between June 2020 and December 2025. Airway MP and transpulmonary mechanical power (MPL) wer

Body weight gain after VMH lesions in adult female rats guanethidine-sympathectomized at birth.

The role of the sympathetic nervous system in body weight gain produced by lesions of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) was studied in adult female rats that had been sympathectomized from birth for 3 weeks with daily injections of guanethidine (0.01 ml/g body weight) starting the second day after birth. Female littermates injected with 0.15 M NaCl served as controls. Body weight gain during the dynamic phase after the VMH lesion was the same in the sympathectomized and control groups of rats, whereas the treated rats gained weight at a slower rate than the controls in the sta

Detoxification of hydrogen peroxide by the rabbit iris-ciliary body.

When the intact rabbit iris-ciliary body was incubated in Tyrode's solution containing 10(-4) M hydrogen peroxide, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide remaining in solution diminished rapidly. The iris-ciliary body was homogenized and centrifuged at 100 000 g. It was observed that the hydrogen peroxide detoxification activity was resident primarily in the 100 000 g supernatant and not in the pellet. The hydrogen peroxide detoxification activity was found to be inactivated by heat and to be non-dialyzable. Gel filtration chromatography experiments revealed that breakdown of hydrogen peroxide

Transmission electron microscope study of the ultrastructural changes induced in the tegument and gut of Fasciola hepatica following in vivo drug treatment with clorsulon.

Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), both the tegument and gut of Fasciola hepatica were examined in an effort to identify and characterise the ultrastructural changes induced following treatment with the flukicidal drug clorsulon. Male Sprague-Dawley rats infected with F. hepatica were dosed orally at 8-8.5 weeks post-infection with clorsulon at a concentration of 12.5 mg/kg body weight. After 24, 48 and 72 h, rats were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and mature flukes recovered from the bile ducts. After 24 h treatment in vivo, disruption of the tegumental syncytium was concentra

Thyroid dysfunction: Another piece in the complex puzzle of Alzheimer's disease?

An expanding body of evidence suggests that thyroid dysfunction may be clinically relevant in Alzheimer's disease (AD), although the significance of this association remains unsettled. Rather than reflecting a single biological pathway, thyroid hormone alterations in AD may involve downstream systemic adaptations related to inflammation and frailty, central dysregulation of thyroid hormone bioavailability and signaling, and upstream vulnerability mechanisms. Clarifying how these pathways intersect with cognitive and functional decline may help refine the biological interpretation of clinical h

The Evaluation and Management of Suspicious Gastric Lesions Following Bariatric Surgery.

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions worldwide and is associated with a higher mortality from several diseases, including adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and of the gastric cardia. Increased body mass index is associated with an increased incidence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Barrett metaplasia, and adenocarcinoma of the cardia. Bariatric surgery remains the most effective therapy for morbid obesity and has the potential to improve weight-related GERD. A high index of suspicion is paramount for early detection of foregut neoplasia after bariatric surgery.

Anorexia nervosa, seasonality, and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Anorexia nervosa is a serious neurobehavioral disorder marked by semistarvation, extreme fear of weight gain, frequently hyperactivity, and low body temperature. The etiology remains unknown. We present a speculation that a primary causative factor is that polyunsaturated fatty acids are skewed to prevent oxidative damage in phospholipid membranes. This causes a change in the trade off of oxidation protection vs homeoviscous adaptation to lower temperatures, which sets off a metabolic cascade that leads to the rogue state of anorexia nervosa.

Heroin-assisted treatment: has a controversial treatment come of age?†.

This editorial considers the findings of the systematic review of heroin-assisted treatment, with six different studies from six different countries, published in this issue. The meta-analysis focuses on supervised injected heroin and reports significant crime reduction and an overall cost-effectiveness of treatment. Despite this body of evidence, policy makers remain reluctant to develop this treatment further. The question remains, what else is required to convince policy makers of the value of such treatment for severe and refractory heroin dependence?

Sizing for modified David's reimplantation procedure.

The problem of sizing the graft, annulus, and left ventricular outflow tract for the David reimplantation type of aortic valve preserving procedure remains a concern, particularly in patients with Marfan syndrome. To resolve this issue, a modified method used in over 20 patients is described of doing the repair around a Hegar's dilator. In essence, the size chosen is according to the patient's normalized annular size based on body surface area. This technique also creates a neosinus in the root.

Intravenous self-administration of metallic mercury: report of a case with a 5-year follow-up.

A case of intravenous self-administration of elementary mercury is presented. The increase urinary excretion of mercury after treatment with 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonate is reported on a 5-year follow-up. No biochemical abnormalities in hepatic or renal function nor clinical pulmonary malfunction have been detected, despite the persistence of metallic densities in the body. The only persistent symptoms are tremor and lower extremity weakness. Any long term benefits of 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonate treatment remains to be determined.
