Abnormalities in the body curvatures were noticed in Cyprinus carpio after the injection of anaesthetics, viz. paraldehyde, tertiary butyl alcohol and butanol. These abnormalities occurred behind the dorsal fin and progressively developed over a period of four months. The abnormalities affect the locomotion and speed of swimming of the fish and appear to be due to toxic effects of the anaesthetics.

European eel is a catadromous fish species, which means that after living in freshwater premature individuals adapt to sea water, and migrate to the Sargasso Sea for spawning. Although male eel can be sexually matured even in freshwater, to date, it was believed that female eel can be matured only in seawater. The genotoxic effects of low concentrations of Se(IV), Hg2+, and CH3HgCl added separately or together (Se(IV)/CH3HgCI) were studied by determining the induction of micronuclei in the binucleated erythrocytes of Prussian carp. The frequencies of micronuclei were elevated in a dose-dependent manner in all treatments when compared to the relevant controls. High opisthorchiasis morbidity among local population and domestic animals was recorded in 1966 in Alekseevskiĭ District of Tataria. Repeated screenings performed in 1989 revealed besides the above disease cases of pseudoamphistomiasis. 183 subjects have been examined, 90 of them (40.9%) revealed hepatobiliary system damages. Bile analysis performed in 61 patients revealed lambliasis in 1 case, opisthorchiasis in 3 cases and pseudoamphistomiasis in 31 cases. Metacercaria of the above trematode was identified in fish from the carp family, which may serve as source of human infection.
