INTRODUCTION: The inability to visualize the sternum tip and T1 vertebra on radiographs may decrease the accuracy of the measurements of cervical sagittal parameters. The object of this study is to investigate the value of MRI to measure cervical sagittal parameters and to compare the data of cervical sagittal parameters on radiographs and MR images.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-two asymptomatic adults were recruited. Each subject had both an MRI and radiographs of the cervical spine. Data, including C2-7 lordosis (CL), T1 slope (T1S), thoracic inlet angle (TIA), neck tilt (NT), and T1S minus

Posttraumatic chronic atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation and congenital absence of the posterior arch of the atlas are rare upper cervical spine abnormalities. The present case is that of a 4-year-old girl who had these two spinal disorders as well as spastic cerebral palsy. The interrelationship, if any, between these three conditions is unclear but presented an unusual diagnostic triad. A posterior spinal fusion between the occiput and third cervical vertebra was performed because of concern for upper cervical spine instability. The patient was immobilized in a halo vest, and a solid fusion o

In some patients, suspected fractures of the cranial part of the cervical spine are difficult to diagnose properly without the use of computed tomography or MT. In addition to imaging and positioning problems, the possibility of anomalies of the atlas vertebra may complicate the diagnostic considerations. Proper knowledge of such anomalies may facilitate the diagnostic procedures. The diagnostic problems are discussed, and are illustrated through two patients recently examined in our department.

Pontine gaze paresis is frequently due to tumor of the brain stem. Occasionally it may be caused by inflammation or ischemia. Two cases are reported, each with pontine gaze paresis and other signs of lower brain-stem injury, basal skull fractures, and second cervical vertebra fractures. This pattern of injuries is believed to be the result of craniocervical hyperextension with stretch injury to the brain stem at the junction of the medulla and pons.

This paper describes four patients with spinal osteoblastoma that had unusual imaging features. Two cases arose in the cervical spine and two in the thoracic spine. Three tumours were associated with diffuse sclerosis of the vertebral body (an 'ivory vertebra'). All of these lesions either arose in the vertebral body or extended into the body from the adjacent pedicle. Reactive sclerosis at multiple levels was seen in three cases (one involving adjacent vertebral bodies, two involving adjacent pedicles or laminae and one involving multiple ribs). Osteophyte formation was identified bridging th

The instantaneous centre of rotation has proven to be a useful parameter of vertebral motion. The normal location of instantaneous centres has been determined in cadavers and in normal volunteers for the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, and abnormal location of centres has been shown to correlate with spinal pain. However, to date, an instantaneous centre has constituted no more than a convenient mathematical summary of vertebral kinematics. It has defied resolution into biologically meaningful parameters. This study offers a novel model of vertebral motion in which the instantaneous cent

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Posterior fixation of the cervical spine (PFC) is commonly performed with rod-connected screws inserted in the vertebras. Because of the many sensitive structures located adjacent to the vertebras, computer-assisted navigation is often used with PFCs. We assessed safety and efficacy of free-hand placed PFCs.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified all the patients in our institution between Januray 2006 and December 2016 who underwent a primary PFC for any indication. The postoperative images and medical records were evaluated for possible clinical failures, which wa

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) comprise 1%-2% of all bone tumors. ABCs involving the upper cervical spine in pediatric patients complicate intervention because of an immature skeleton and nearby neurovascular elements. Treatment often consists of surgical intervention with preoperative embolization to mitigate blood loss. During selective arterial embolization, it is important to be aware of extracranial-intracranial anastomoses from tumor feeding vessels. We describe a C2 vertebrae ABC that had multiple tumor arteries anastomosing with bilateral vertebral arteries.

BACKGROUND: The posterior cervical keyhole (KH) laminoforaminotomy has been described to involve the lateral portion of cervical laminae of the upper vertebra alone (small KH) or of both upper and lower vertebrae (large KH).
OBJECTIVE: To microscopically compare the two keyhole techniques in terms of their ability to expose the corresponding cervical roots.
METHODS: Ten cadaveric specimens were operated bilaterally from C3-4 to C6-7 level to expose a total of 80 nerve roots. The large KH was applied to the left side, the small KH to the right side. The maximal length of exposed nerve roots w

RESULTS: MPS, FMS, and temporomandibular dysfunction were diagnosed in 9 (64.3%), 3 (21.4%), and 2 (14.3%) patients, respectively. Visual analogue scale scores decreased significantly after the surgical excision of elonga …

Cervical vertigo is characterized by vertigo from the cervical spine. However, whether cervical vertigo is an independent entity still remains controversial. In this narrative review, we outline the basic science and clinical evidence for cervical vertigo according to the current literature. So far, there are 4 different hypotheses explaining the vertigo of a cervical origin, including proprioceptive cervical vertigo, Barré-Lieou syndrome, rotational vertebral artery vertigo, and migraine-associated cervicogenic vertigo. Proprioceptive cervical vertigo and rotational vertebral artery vertigo h

Congenital anomalies of the arch of the atlas in the sense of clefts are uncommon. As such anomalies may be mistaken for fractures, radiologists should be aware of them. A case of aplasia of the right part of the posterior arch producing wide, asymmetric medial cleft of the atlas is presented. The patient also had hypoplastic left part of the arch with the lateral cleft formed by a secondary ossification centre in the posterior tubercle. This combination of anomalies has not formerly been presented in literature.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is associated with decreased survival in cervical cancer patients treated with radiotherapy. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was widely used in image-guided radiotherapy. Sarcopenia is assessed by the skeletal muscle index (SMI) of third lumbar vertebra (L3). Whereas, L3 is usually not included on the cervical cancer radiotherapy CBCT images.
PURPOSE: We aimed to explore the usefulness of CBCT for evaluating SMI and deep learning (DL)-based automatic segmentation and sarcopenia diagnosis for cervical cancer radiotherapy patients. We evaluated the SMI through fifth
