Annual reproductive synchronization in ovary and pineal gland function of female short-nosed fruit bat, Cynopterus sphinx.

We studied the annual correlation of ovarian activity and pineal gland in relation with seasonal variation and gestation of a tropical zone short-nosed fruit bat Cynopterus sphinx. Female bats showed bimodal polyestry (February/March and September/October) in their reproductive cycle. Plasma estradiol concentration ran parallel with ovarian activity and had an inverse relation with pineal mass and peripheral melatonin concentration. Due to the delayed embryonic development in the uterus (October-March) of female bats, interestingly, the uterine activity did not show a parallel relation with ov

Extinction of the acoustic startle response in moths endemic to a bat-free habitat.

Most moths use ears solely to detect the echolocation calls of hunting, insectivorous bats and evoke evasive flight manoeuvres. This singularity of purpose predicts that this sensoribehavioural network will regress if the selective force that originally maintained it is removed. We tested this with noctuid moths from the islands of Tahiti and Moorea, sites where bats have never existed and where an earlier study demonstrated that the ears of endemic species resemble those of adventives although partially reduced in sensitivity. To determine if these moths still express the anti-bat defensive b

Nipah encephalitis outbreak in Malaysia.

INTRODUCTION: Between September 1998 and June 1999, there was a severe outbreak of viral encephalitis among the pig farm workers in Malaysia. METHODS: This is a review of the published literature related to the outbreak with the focus on human diseases. RESULTS: The encephalitis was caused by a newly discovered paramyxovirus related to Hendra virus, later named Nipah virus. There were 265 patients with acute encephalitis. The disease is thought to spread from pig to man through close contact. The risk of human-to-human spread is thought to below. The disease affected mainly adult Chinese mal

Ultrastructure of the submandibular gland of the rare white-winged vampire bat, Diaemus youngi.

The submandibular gland of the white-winged vampire bat, Diaemus youngi, was examined by electron microscopy. Unlike typical submandibular g … undance of microvilli in the salivary glands in the two vampire bat species (and their absence from chiropteran species that consume other types of diets) is a strong indication that these structures play a significant role in dealing with the problems posed by a sanguivorous diet.

Leptospiral antibodies in flying foxes in Australia.

The sera of 271 pteropid bats (or flying foxes) collected from Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory were screened against a reference panel of 21 Leptospira spp. using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Sera were collected from December 1997 through August 1999. The MAT panel represented those serovars previously isolated in Australia, as well as exotic serovars found in neighboring countries. Leptospiral antibodies were detected in 75 (28%) of the sera and represented seven serovars, one of which, L. interrogans serovar cynopteri has been regarded

Paralysis of street rabies virus-infected mice is dependent on T lymphocytes.

Street rabies virus (SRV)-infected T-lymphocyte-deficient (nude) mice, in contrast to euthymic mice, did not develop hindlimb paralysis prior to death. To document the role of T lymphocytes in rabies virus-associated paralysis, 10(8) spleen cells from normal immunocompetent euthymic mice were transferred to nude mice and the recipient mice were challenged with SRV. One hundred percent of the reconstituted mice developed paralysis and died. Depletion of T cells from the donor spleen suspension prior to transfer abrogated the development of paralysis but did not prevent the deaths of the recipie

Immunohistocytochemical and immunofluorescent localization of catecholamine-synthesizing enzymes in the carotid body of the bat and dog.

By the immunoenzymatic PAP (peroxidase antiperoxidase) technique and immunofluorescent methods, the localization of a catecholamine-synthesizing enzyme, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), in dopaminergic chief cells was elucidated in the dog and bat carotid bodies. Two types of cells were identified by PAP electron microscopy; TH-positive and TH-negative cells. The TH-positive reaction was observed both in the granules (about 170 and 300 nm in diameter) and in the ground substance, but not in the nucleus. Dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) reaction was negative in both cells. These findings may strongly

Identification of a putative novel rotavirus A VP4 genotype in bats from an urban Atlantic Forest, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro State, Southeastern Brazil.

Cross-species transmission occurs in rotaviruses, and human infection by animal strains is possible. We investigated the occurrence and genetic diversity of Rotavirus A (RVA) in bats from urban Atlantic Forest remnants under intense anthropogenic pressure in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Bats were captured between September 2020 and March 2022, totaling 240 samples (rectal swabs and feces) from 16 species. The RVA infection rate was 1.25% (3/240; Artibeus lituratus and Carollia perspicillata) using RT-qPCR targeting the NSP3 gene. A complete genomic constellation was attempted for positive samples.

Conservation genetics of the spotted bat: Insights from ancient, historical, and modern samples.

Spotted bats (Euderma maculatum) are cryptic (nocturnal, volant, and roost solitarily) and thus their biology remains largely undescribed. Only 35 specimens were known to science before the mid-1960s. Hence, they are ideal candidates for genetic studies to uncover population genetic diversity and structure, and thereby inform conservation. We analyzed nuclear microsatellite loci (N = 17) and mitochondrial control region sequences from 121 individuals spanning ancient (up to 2,100 years BP), historical (1904-1991), and contemporary (1994-2025) timeframes across the species' range in western Nor

A Multifaceted Approach Reveals Complex Genomic Mediation of White-Nose Syndrome Adaptative Response in the Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus).

Novel pathogens have become a major challenge faced by wildlife in the Anthropocene. White-nose syndrome (WNS) has decimated bat populations across North America over the last two decades. Demographic and physiological evidence of adaptation in one heavily affected species, Myotis lucifugus, has prompted multiple attempts to delineate the genomic underpinnings, but these studies show little congruence in their findings. This may be due, in part, to the limitations of the genomic resources utilized and/or analytical approaches employed. Here, we performed high-coverage whole-genome resequencing

Diversity and spillover risk of swine acute diarrhea syndrome and related coronaviruses in China and Southeast Asia.

Bats are the reservoir hosts of emerging coronaviruses (CoVs) affecting human and livestock health. We assessed the diversity, evolution, and geographic distribution of two alphacoronaviruses (subgenus Rhinacovirus) with considerable potential for emergence: swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV), which has caused large outbreaks in pigs in China and can infect primary human airway epithelial cells in vitro; and the related Rhinolophus bat coronavirus HKU2 (HKU2-CoV). Phylogenetic analyses of 523 rhinacovirus sequences from bats in China and Southeast Asia suggest these viruses s

Mapping Histoplasma spp. in bats and cave ecosystems: evidence from midwestern Brazil.

UNLABELLED: Caves serve as natural reservoirs for diverse microbial species due to their unique biotic and abiotic conditions. Histoplasma spp. is frequently associated with guano-enriched soil, low luminosity, and high humidity, particularly in Latin America, a region highly endemic for histoplasmosis. Despite the continent's diverse biomes, local environmental and host distributions of Histoplasma remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a Histoplasma-specific quantitative PCR assay targeting the hc100 gene on guano samples from seven bat-inhabited caves and tiss

Increasing Occurrence of Marburg Virus Outbreaks in Africa: Risk Assessment for Public Health.

In this millennium, Marburgvirus (MARV) outbreaks with very high mortality but still small case numbers (< 400) were observed with increasing frequency in Africa. Ecologists identified Egyptian Rousettus bats (ERB) as viral reservoir species causing occasional zoonotic spillover events, mostly in humans intruding into their cave habitats as miners or tourists. So far only short human-to-human transmission chains have been documented. ERB can be experimentally infected with MARV but show no clinical signs. MARV transmission is inefficient among adult bats and occurs mostly between older juvenil

Zoonotic sources and the spread of antimicrobial resistance from the perspective of low and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is an increasing challenge in low and middle-income countries as it is widespread in these countries and is linked to an increased mortality. Apart from human and environmental factors, animal-related drivers of antimicrobial resistance in low- and middle-income countries have special features that differ from high-income countries. The aim of this narrative review is to address the zoonotic sources and the spread of antimicrobial resistance from the perspective of low- and middle-income countries. MAIN BODY: Contamination with extended-spectrum beta-lacta

Morphological and molecular identification of helminths of the greater bulldog bat Noctilio leporinus (Quiroptera: Noctilionidae) from Campeche, Mexico.

Surveys on parasites of bats from the Americas have been conducted, but information on helminths is still scarce, especially in the Neotropical region. In Mexico, there are species of bats that lack of a record for helminth species, such as members of the family Noctilionidae. The present study describes for the first time the helminths of Noctilio leporinus in Campeche, Mexico. In 2017, six specimens of N. leporinus were studied for helminths. The species identification of helminths was based on morphological studies and molecular analysis of fragments of the 28S rDNA. All bat specimens were

Bat Influenza Viruses: Current Status and Perspective.

Bats are natural reservoirs for many viruses, including several that are zoonotic. Two unusual H17N10 and H18N11 influenza viruses have been found in New World bats. Although neither of these viruses have been isolated, infectious clone technology has permitted significant progress to understand their biology, which include unique features compared to all other known influenza A viruses. In addition, an H9N2-like influenza A virus was isolated from Old World bats and it shows similar characteristics of normal influenza A viruses. In this review, current status and perspective on influenza A vi

Regulation of the Dimerization and Activity of SARS-CoV-2 Main Protease through Reversible Glutathionylation of Cysteine 300.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), encodes two proteases required for replication. The main protease (Mpro), encoded as part of two polyproteins, pp1a and pp1ab, is responsible for 11 different cleavages of these viral polyproteins to produce mature proteins required for viral replication. Mpro is therefore an attractive target for therapeutic interventions. Certain proteins in cells under oxidative stress undergo modification of reactive cysteines. We show Mpro is susceptible to glutathionylation, leading

Measuring spatial co-occurrences of species potentially involved in Leishmania transmission cycles through a predictive and fieldwork approach.

The Leishmaniases are a group of neglected tropical diseases caused by different species of the protozoan parasite Leishmania, transmitted to its mammalian hosts by the bites of several species of female Phlebotominae sand flies. Many factors have contributed to shifts in the disease distribution and eco epidemiological outcomes, resulting in the emergence of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis outbreaks and the incrimination of vectors in unreported regions. New research development is vital for establishing the new paradigms of the present transmission cycles, hoping to facilitate new control strategies

Histoplasmosis acquired in Alberta, Canada: an epidemiological and genomic study.

BACKGROUND: The classic geographical range of histoplasmosis in North America primarily includes the states and provinces adjacent to the Ohio, Mississippi, and St Lawrence riverways. Although Alberta, Canada is not typically considered a region of risk for histoplasmosis, cases with suspected local acquisition have been reported. We aimed to investigate the epidemiology and geographical distribution of cases of histoplasmosis in Alberta to assess evidence for local acquisition of infections, using genomic analysis for corroboration. METHODS: We did an epidemiological and genomic investigatio
