Benefits of sustained moderate weight loss in obesity.

Over the last few years, weight loss has been recognised as a key factor in the control and prevention of coronary heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidaemia, cardiorespiratory failure and other chronic degenerative diseases. It has been shown that even a modest loss of 5% of initial body weight can reduce, eliminate or prevent these disorders in a large proportion of overweight patients. The early benefits of weight loss can be explained by the direct effects of a low calorie diet, but the long-term effects can only partially be attributed to diet, physical exercise or beha

Pro‑inflammatory insulin‑resistant lipid phenotype in down syndrome identified by 1H‑NMR metabolomics in obesity-matched African‑American children and young adults.

Down syndrome (DS) is associated with elevated rates of insulin resistance and chronic metabolic disease, yet its detailed metabolic and lipidomic profiles, particularly in pediatric populations, remain poorly defined. To characterize plasma lipid profiles in children and young adults with DS and overweight or obesity, to determine degree of lipid heterogeneity and if the observed dyslipidemia is independent of obesity severity. An extended objective is to search for metabolite features that may differentiate DS from weight‑matched controls. Plasma samples from 12 African‑American participants

Fish oil supplementation during late pregnancy does not influence plasma lipids or lipoprotein levels in young adult offspring.

Nutritional influences on cardiovascular disease operate throughout life. Studies in both experimental animals and humans have suggested that changes in the peri- and early post-natal nutrition can affect the development of the various components of the metabolic syndrome in adult life. This has lead to the hypothesis that n-3 fatty acid supplementation in pregnancy may have a beneficial effect on lipid profile in the offspring. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of supplementation with n-3 fatty acids during the third trimester of pregnancy on lipids and lipoproteins i

Vitamin K1 as a screening marker to facilitate the genetic diagnosis of class I familial hypobetalipoproteinemia: A prospective cohort study with a systematic review analysis.

BACKGROUND: While low levels of LDL-cholesterol can be atheroprotective, homozygous Class I familial hypobetalipoproteinemia (Ho-Class I FHBL) and heterozygous Class I FHBL (He-Class I FHBL) due to APOB variants (i.e., heterozygous FHBL1 (HeFHBL1)) have serious complications due to genetic defects in the chylomicron/VLDL secretion pathway. However, Ho-Class I FHBL with milder phenotypes and HeFHBL1 are often underdiagnosed due to overlapping lipid profiles with other forms of hypobetalipoproteinemia. OBJECTIVE: Additional screening markers are warranted. METHODS: We established a prospective

Replacement of saturated fatty acids with linoleic acid in western diet attenuates atherosclerosis in a mouse model with inducible ablation of hepatic LDL receptor.

Dietary saturate fatty acids (SFAs) have been consistently linked to atherosclerosis and obesity, both of which are characterized by chronic inflammation and impaired lipid metabolism. In comparison, the effects of linoleic acid (LA), the predominant polyunsaturated fatty acid in the Western diet, seem to diverge. Data from human studies suggest a positive association between high dietary intake of LA and the improvement of cardiovascular risk. However, excessive LA intake has been implicated in the development of obesity. Concerns have also been raised on the potential pro-inflammatory proper
