Chitosan-stabilized Fe(0) nanoparticles (CTO-Fe(0)) and Fe(0) nanoparticles synthesized in ethanol-water mixed system (EW-Fe(0)) were tested for reduction of Cr(VI) in water. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) study suggested that nitrogen and oxygen atoms are the binding sites for chitosan on iron which was accountable for the stability of Fe(0) nanoparticles. While the EW-Fe(0) ignites spontaneously when exposed to air, the CTO-Fe(0) was still in zero valence state after exposure to air over 2-month period as shown by X-ray powder diffraction patterns. Different arene Cr(CO)(3) complexes were supported on a polystyrene isonitrile resin by photochemical-promoted replacement of a chromium carbonyl ligand by the NC group. The supported complexes proved to be stable and were successfully used for further transformations. In particular, the reactivity of dichlorobenzene complexes to different nucleophiles was investigated and found to be comparable with that of the parent Cr(CO)(3) complexes.

The purported performance-enhancing effects of supplemental Cr, as elaborated in studies focusing on beef and dairy cattle models of agricultural stress, affect both immune and endocrine pathways. Furthermore, interactions between the immune and endocrine systems, associated with the actions of insulin and cortisol, may be coordinated through the production of regulatory cytokines. Unlocking the mechanism of action of Cr as a useful farm animal management tool may provide further understanding of the health and performance ramifications of immune-endocrine interactions in agricultural species.

A simple, rapid and sensitive method is described for the iodometric determination of microgram amounts of chromium(III), based on the oxidation of chromium(III) with periodate at pH 3.2, removal of the unreacted periodate by masking with molybdate and subsequent iodometric determination of the liberated iodate. Chromium(VI) can be determined by this method after prior reduction to chromium(III) with sodium sulphite. The method can also be used for the analysis of organochromium compounds.
