[Current and future ecological niche of Leishmaniasis (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) in the Neotropical region].

The leishmaniasis is a complex disease system, caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania and transmitted to humans by the vector Lutzomyia spp. Since it is listed as a neglected disease according to the World Health Organization, the aim of this study was to determine the current and future niche of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis in the Neotropical region. We built the ecological niche model (ENM) of cutaneous (N= 2 910 occurrences) and visceral (N= 851 occurrences) leishmaniasis using MaxEnt algorithm. Nine bioclimatic variables (BIO1, BIO4, BIO5, BIO6, BIO7, BIO12, BIO13, BIO14, BIO1

Anxiety in response to the climate and environmental crises: validation of the Hogg Eco-Anxiety Scale in Germany.

BACKGROUND: As the climate and environmental crises unfold, eco-anxiety, defined as anxiety about the crises' devastating consequences for life on earth, affects mental health worldwide. Despite its importance, research on eco-anxiety is currently limited by a lack of validated assessment instruments available in different languages. Recently, Hogg and colleagues proposed a multidimensional approach to assess eco-anxiety. Here, we aim to translate the original English Hogg Eco-Anxiety Scale (HEAS) into German and to assess its reliability and validity in a German sample. METHODS: Following th

Effects of life-history requirements on the distribution of a threatened reptile.

Survival and reproduction are the two primary life-history traits essential for species' persistence; however, the environmental conditions that support each of these traits may not be the same. Despite this, reproductive requirements are seldom considered when estimating species' potential distributions. We sought to examine potentially limiting environmental factors influencing the distribution of an oviparous reptile of conservation concern with respect to the species' survival and reproduction and to assess the implications of the species' predicted climatic constraints on current conserva

Climate change projections of West Nile virus infections in Europe: implications for blood safety practices.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is transmitted by mosquitoes in both urban as well as in rural environments and can be pathogenic in birds, horses and humans. Extrinsic factors such as temperature and land use are determinants of WNV outbreaks in Europe, along with intrinsic factors of the vector and virus. METHODS: With a multivariate model for WNV transmission we computed the probability of WNV infection in 2014, with July 2014 temperature anomalies. We applied the July temperature anomalies under the balanced A1B climate change scenario (mix of all energy sources, fossil and non-fossil)

[Impacts of climate change on the functioning and productivity of agroecosystems: a focus on the impact of interactions between CO2, temperature and water deficit].

Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations and temperatures, as well as changes in water regimes, are major determinants of the functioning and productivity of agroecosystems. Although the individual effects of each of these factors have been extensively studied, their combined action remains poorly understood, despite the fact that these factors interact closely to shape future climate conditions. This article provides a synthesis of current knowledge on the combined impacts of rising CO2, temperatures and water deficiency on crop plants, with a particular focus on wheat. Following a review of the

Communicating Risk for a Climate-Sensitive Disease: A Case Study of Valley Fever in Central California.

Valley Fever, or Coccidioidomycosis, a fungal respiratory disease, is prevalent with increasing incidence in the Southwestern United States, especially in the central region of California. Public health agencies in the region do not have a consistent strategy for communication and health promotion targeting vulnerable communities about this climate-sensitive disease. We used the behavior adaptation communication model to design and conduct semi-structured interviews with representatives of public health agencies in five California counties: Fresno, Kern, Kings, San Luis Obispo, and Tulare Coun

Global change-driven plant adaptive strategies and interspecific interaction networks: from molecular regulation to ecological management.

Global change drivers, including climate warming, elevated CO2, nitrogen deposition, extreme climate events, heavy metal pollution, and biological invasions, interact in complex ways to reconfigure terrestrial ecosystems. This review synthesizes recent advances to develop a framework linking plant molecular responses to ecosystem management. We first examine how abiotic stressors reshape plant physiology and traits through defense signaling, secondary metabolite synthesis, and life-history adjustments. We then analyze how these plant-level changes cascade upward to restructure interspecific ne

Increasing lifetime exposure to extreme fire weather under climate change in Europe.

Climate change increases fire weather globally. Hot, dry and windy conditions raise the likelihood of fires igniting and spreading and make suppression more challenging. With further warming, fire weather is projected to intensify across Europe, yet implications for today's young generations remain unclear. Here, we analyse lifetime exposure to extreme fire weather across Europe using an ensemble of bias-adjusted and downscaled global climate models. To this end, we developed dem4cli, an open-source Python package that integrates demographic data into climate hazard assessments. We find younge…

Temperature and Rainfall Associate With Patterns of Parasitism in Free-Ranging Capuchin Monkeys (Cebus imitator).

Ecological variables such as climate and habitat composition can impact the infection patterns of gastrointestinal parasites in animal host populations by affecting host behavior and parasite survivability and distribution in the external environment. Data from wild primate populations provide insights into these processes. To contribute new insights from a well-characterized population, we collected 200 fecal samples from five groups of Costa Rican capuchin monkeys from August 2020 to August 2021 and screened them for gastrointestinal parasites. We estimated annual home range sizes for the gr

Hotspots of Bacterial Pathogen Abundance and Exposure Risk in Soils of the Contiguous United States.

Soils are reservoirs of pathogenic bacteria that cause human illness, particularly after mobilizing events such as extreme rain. Land-use patterns (e.g., proximity to agriculture) and soil properties (e.g., moisture) are associated with abundance of individual pathogenic bacteria. However, there are major uncertainties in (a) the importance of local/regional land-use decisions relative to overall natural variability of pathogenicity and (b) the correlations among pathogen abundance, climate-linked physical processes increasing pathogen mobility, and the vulnerability of human receptors. This i

Long-term trends of streamwater chemistry in an agricultural watershed: Effects of anthropogenic and climatic factors.

The chemistry of headwater streams is a key indicator of the health of riparian zones and surrounding terrestrial ecosystems. This chemistry is shaped by biogeochemical processes, including chemical weathering, and anthropogenic activities that interact with one another and are sensitive to climate. Elucidating trends in streamwater chemistry and the drivers that underpin them is essential for informing land-management decisions and anticipating water-quality issues that may affect downstream waters. In this work, we investigated the effects of anthropogenic and climatic factors on long-term v

Aboveground biomass in Australian tropical forests now a net carbon source.

Tropical forests act as important global carbon sinks1, and Earth System Models predict increasing near-term carbon sink capacity for these forests, with elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration thought to stimulate tree growth2,3. However, current forest inventory data analyses suggest that the carbon sink capacity of intact tropical forests may be in decline, portending a possible future switch from carbon sinks to carbon sources3-7. Here we use long-term forest inventory data (1971-2019) from Australian moist tropical forests and a causal inference framework8-10 to assess the carbo

Understanding complex volcanic hydrosystems using a multi-tracer approach.

Climate change affects groundwater availability and residence times, necessitating a thorough understanding of aquifer characteristics to define sustainable yields, particularly in regions where water is heavily exploited. This study focuses on the Volvic volcanic aquifer (Chaîne des Puys, France), where groundwater recharge has decreased due to climate change, raising concerns about water use sustainability. To address these challenges, this work proposes a multi-tracer approach, based on hydrogeological monitoring, including the estimation of groundwater ages, major elements chemistry and wa

Effects of Soil Moisture and Soil Temperature on Coccidioidomycosis.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever, VF) is a climate-sensitive infectious disease caused by inhaling soil-dwelling fungus Coccidioides, mostly reported in southwestern USA. Although soil moisture (SM) and soil temperature (ST) are known to shape the fungal lifecycle, their effects on coccidioidomycosis remain understudied. Most prior studies have relied on their proxies-precipitation and air temperature-that might not accurately capture soil hydrothermal dynamics. We conducted multivariable negative binomial regressions to estimate seasonal associations between incidence and climate drivers-incl

Terrestrial discharges mediate trophic shifts and enhance methylmercury accumulation in estuarine biota.

The input of mercury (Hg) to ecosystems is estimated to have increased two- to fivefold during the industrial era, and Hg accumulates in aquatic biota as neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). Escalating anthropogenic land use and climate change are expected to alter the input rates of terrestrial natural organic matter (NOM) and nutrients to aquatic ecosystems. For example, climate change has been projected to induce 10 to 50% runoff increases for large coastal regions globally. A major knowledge gap is the potential effects on MeHg exposure to biota following these ecosystem changes. We monitored

An annotated aerial imagery dataset for automated detection of harbour seals in Svalbard, Norway.

Arctic marine ecosystems are undergoing significant changes due to rapid climate warming, affecting species abundances and distributions. Harbour seals (Phoca vitulina), the most widely distributed pinniped in the world, are expanding their range northward in Arctic waters. Monitoring their ongoing distributional shift using traditional survey methods is logistically challenging. In particular, detecting and manually counting seals from aerial imagery is labour-intensive and costly. Integrating object detection algorithms into the analytical phase of surveys can greatly reduce post-processing
