OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the improvement of speech perception in Chinese-native cochlear implant (CI) children using frequency modulated system (FM system).
METHOD: The mandarin speech perception (MSP) system was used to evaluate 11 cases with severe and profound hearing loss who were fitted cochlear implants. Listeners were asked to repeat MSP words presented in quiet and several different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions and percent correct word repetition was determined. Performance was evaluated under FM system and without FM (CI only). In addition, the listeners' subjective performan

The aim of this study was to assess dose attenuation by a Digisonic SP cochlear implant (CI) and evaluate its impact on treatment planning. The Digisonic CI was irradiated with 6 MV photons. Overall dose attenuation was assessed with MOSFET dosimeters and Gafchromic films. In addition, we evaluated the attenuation of separate CI components. Dose attenuation was also calculated using different radiation treatment planning systems (TPS) softwares and dose calculation algorithms. The CI was placed on a head phantom. Single-beam and multiple-beam plans were evaluated for dose attenuation using two

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implant (CI) (re)habilitation programs are long-term processes, with many factors contributing to the overall success. The clinics in India that are working toward pediatric CI habilitation vary in their team philosophy, clinical practices, and service delivery. It is important to explore their clinical perspectives and practices to appreciate their current state and suggest directions for improvement in the future.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to characterize the current status and clinical practices of the pediatric CI programs in India.
METHODS: Twenty-

OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study were to compare, from an acoustic approach, the voice of cochlear-implanted children and the one of deaf children using conventional hearing aids (HA) to a control group; to characterize, from an aerodynamic approach, the voice of congenital/prelingual profound deaf children wearing cochlear implants for at least 3 years and implanted before 3 years old; and to classify, from a perceptual approach, the voice of implanted children, of fitted children with conventional HA, and of normal hearing (NH) children as "normal or dysphonic voices."
METHODS: We ana

OBJECTIVE: New cochlear implant (CI) designs and developments in implantation techniques have revolutionized the management of hearing loss. However, cochlear implantation still has some disadvantages, such as its potential to initiate an inflammatory response that may lead to further hair cell damage. Recent topics of investigation have been the effect of glucocorticoids on inflammatory tissue response reduction, glucocorticoid dosage levels, and drug-delivery methods. In the present study, dexamethasone delivery via a drug-eluting CI was evaluated histologically through assessing inflammator…

BACKGROUND: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in newborns is estimated with an incidence around 1:10,000 per year and is divided into syndromic and non-syndromic forms. In case of present retrocochlear function' cochlear implantation allows speech and cognitive development in affected children, comparable to that of normal hearing children. Pathogenesis of SNHL remains unclear in many cases. Imaging of the temporal bone, such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), can reveal conspicuous findings, e.g. enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) and Mondini malformation (MM) o…

OBJECTIVE: Early treatment of profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss with cochlear implantation has become routine, resulting in an increased proportion of children implanted at younger ages. These children are at a relatively high risk for acute otitis media (AOM), and are more likely to develop mastoiditis in the implanted ear. Despite the significant risks associated with mastoiditis, including compromise of the implant, there are no specific guidelines on the management of this population. We propose a treatment algorithm emphasizing early but conservative operative intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Minimal access approaches for cochlear implants have recently gained popularity, offering a smaller incision and minimal hair shave. The current generation of thinner internal receiver stimulators is adaptable for these approaches. However, conventional bony fixation of the internal receiver stimulator is difficult through this limited exposure, and some minimal access techniques rely on soft tissue fixation only. Inadequate fixation can result in device migration, extrusion, and electrode migration. We compare wound complications and electrode migration for a group undergoing conve

OBJECTIVE: To report a series of pitfalls and complications in a case of cochlear implantation.
METHOD: Case report.
RESULTS: An 11-year-old boy affected by auditory neuropathy underwent cochlear implantation. Intra-operative assessment was apparently consistent with correct insertion of the electrode array into the cochlea. However, subsequent high resolution computed tomography revealed that the entire electrode array was curled up within the vestibule. Revision surgery was complicated by cerebrospinal fluid leakage. A straight probe was repeatedly inserted into the internal auditory canal…

Cochlear implantation has become established worldwide as a safe and effective method of auditory rehabilitation of selected severely and profound deaf children and adults. Over 100,000 patients have received cochlear implants worldwide with the paediatric population proving to be the main beneficiaries. The Libyan cochlear implant programme was set up in 2004. Data relating to the patients who received cochlear implantation at Tripoli Medical Centre between October 2007 and February 2010 were analysed. Implant operations were performed on 37 patients. All patients received Med-El SONATA(TI) (…

In the last decade the population of deaf children has changed dramatically in a lot of countries, especially in those where universal neonatal hearing screening, early multi-disciplinary support, digital hearing aids and cochlear implants are available. Most of these children can acquire intelligible spoken language and choose spoken language as their main means of communication and for access to education, because they go to mainstream schools in larger proportions, and fewer to schools for the deaf. Mainstream placement does not eliminate the need for services, which will vary depending upo

Severe to profound hearing impairment (HI) is estimated to affect around 1/2000 young children. Advances in genetics have made it possible to identify several genes related to HI. This information can cast light upon prognostic factors regarding the outcome in cochlear implantation, and provide information both for scientific and genetic counselling purposes. From 1992 to 2005, 273 children from 254 families (probands) were offered cochlear implants in Norway. An evaluation of the causes of HI, especially regarding the genes GJB2, GJB6, SLC26A4, KCNQ1, KCNE1, and the mutation A1555G in mitocho…

Previous studies have shown that residual acoustic hearing supplements cochlear implant function to improve speech recognition in noise as well as perception of music. The current study had two primary objectives. First, we sought to determine how cochlear implantation and electrical stimulation over a time period of 14 to 21 months influence cochlear structures such as hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons. Second, we sought to investigate whether the structures that provide acoustic hearing also affect the perception of electrical stimulation. We compared psychophysical responses to cochlea…
