Implications of language use in posttraumatic nightmares on psychological symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: The current study sought to understand how language use in posttrauma nightmare (PTNM) reports may be related to psychological symptoms over the course of treatment. METHOD: Multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between language use in PTNMs and psychological symptoms. Specifically, cognitive processing words (CPW) and emotional tone (ET) measured in PTNMs were analyzed in their relationship to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression symptom severity, as well as nightmare frequency and distress measured at the midtreatment and last trea

Is more better? A meta-analysis of dose and efficacy in face-to-face psychological treatments for problem and disordered gambling.

A growing literature supports the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapies, motivational interventions, and personalized feedback to treat problem and disordered gambling. However, there is currently debate as to how much treatment is necessary. Some studies indicate that attending a greater number of sessions is related to enhanced therapeutic outcomes, while other studies indicate that one session produces equivalent therapeutic outcomes to multiple sessions. To contribute to this debate, meta-analysis was used to examine the relation between dose and outcome in studies of cognitive-behavi

Mnemonic monitoring in anosognosia for memory loss.

OBJECTIVE: Anosognosia, or unawareness, for memory loss has been proposed to underlie cognitive functions such as memory and executive function. However, there is an inconsistent association between these constructs. Recent studies have shown that compromise ongoing self-monitoring of one's memory associates with anosognosia for memory loss. Yet to date it is unclear which memory monitoring mechanisms are impaired in these patients. In this study, we examined the extent to which temporal monitoring or orbitofrontal reality filtering (e.g., ability to monitor the temporal relevance of a memory)

Visual paired associate learning deficits associated with elevated beta-amyloid in cognitively normal older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown that paired associate learning (PAL), a type of episodic memory, is impaired in early Alzheimer's disease (AD). Such tasks require that a set of associations (e.g., pattern-location) be learned over several trials, and the objective is to reduce errors with each trial. Currently, the nature and magnitude of impairment and decline on PAL measures in cognitively normal (CN) older adults with elevated levels of beta-amyloid (Aβ+) is unknown. METHOD: This study examined PAL errors in Aβ+ and Aβ - CN older adults, both within a single assessment and over time

Theory of mind and social competence in children and adolescents with temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to examine theory of mind (ToM) and its relationship to social competence in children and adolescents with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The secondary aim was to explore the relationship between ToM, social competence, epilepsy variables, and executive functioning (EF). METHOD: Twenty-two children and adolescents (8-16 years old) with TLE and 22 typically developing controls completed two advanced behavioural tests of ToM (faux-pas, strange stories), measures of EF and verbal IQ. Parents completed questionnaires assessing ToM and social competence

Neurocognitive intra-individual variability within HIV+ adults with and without current substance use.

OBJECTIVE: HIV infection and current substance use (SU) are linked to cognitive and functional deficits, yet findings on their combined effects are mixed. Neurocognitive intraindividual variability, measured as dispersion of scores across a neuropsychological battery, is associated with worse cognitive outcomes and functional deficits among HIV+ adults but has not been studied in the context of HIV+ adults with current SU. We hypothesized that, among HIV+ adults, current SU would be associated with greater dispersion, that greater dispersion would be associated with worse medication adherence,

Anxiety, depression, and function in individuals with chronic physical conditions: A longitudinal analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This longitudinal study examined the unique relationship between anxiety, symptoms (pain intensity, sleep disturbance, fatigue severity), and function domains (self-reported cognitive function, physical function, satisfaction with social roles) in individuals with chronic physical conditions, independent of depressive symptoms. METHOD: Three surveys were mailed on an approximately yearly basis to community-dwelling adults with one of four chronic physical conditions (spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, postpoliomyelitis syndrome). The first survey was comple

Best Practices for Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy: Patient Selection.

INTRODUCTION: When spasticity interferes with comfort, function, activities of daily living, mobility, positioning, or caregiver assistance, patients should be considered for intrathecal baclofen (ITB) therapy. METHODS: An expert panel consulted on best practices. RESULTS: ITB can be considered for problematic spasticity involving muscles/muscle groups during all phases of diseases, including progressive neurologic diseases. ITB alone or with other treatments should not be exclusively reserved for individuals who have failed other approaches. ITB combined with rehabilitation can be effective

Higher Aortic Stiffness Is Related to Lower Cerebral Blood Flow and Preserved Cerebrovascular Reactivity in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Mechanisms underlying the association between age-related arterial stiffening and poor brain health remain elusive. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) homeostasis may be implicated. This study evaluates how aortic stiffening relates to resting CBF and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) in older adults. METHODS: Vanderbilt Memory & Aging Project participants free of clinical dementia, stroke, and heart failure were studied, including older adults with normal cognition (n=155; age, 72±7 years; 59% male) or mild cognitive impairment (n=115; age, 73±7 years; 57% male). Aortic pulse wave velocity

Pain management in the perioperative orthogeriatric setting: Recommendations of the special interest group Orthogeriatrics of the German Geriatrics Society.

Management of perioperative pain in older adults can be challenging. Multimorbidity, functional decline or diminished physiological reserves, the corresponding polypharmacy, age-related pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic changes need to be considered. Pain assessment can be complicated by cognitive impairment and communication barriers. Older adults are at high risk of adverse consequences from surgery and undertreated pain as well as pharmacological overtreatment. Effective pain control in the perioperative period needs to be balanced against potential pharmacological harm. The aim of the or

How to run round-robin social interaction studies: A tutorial for the efficient capture of natural social behavior.

The study of natural social behavior is a frontier discipline in psychology. Although such work is highly necessary for advancing and refining theories of social behavior, social cognition, evolutionary psychology, relationships, and more, researchers rarely commit to such intensive research designs due to the anticipated effort involved. In particular, to understand social behavior as it naturally unfolds, scientists must be able to collect and handle a high volume of rich social data efficiently, effectively, and reproducibly. Moreover, because social behavior is highly individualistic and c

Importance of older age for nutrition management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the impact of nutrition on critically ill older adults, focusing on the role of comorbidities such as malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty, as well as the importance of nutritional support for outcomes such as mortality, recovery, and long-term disability. RECENT FINDINGS: Malnutrition is highly prevalent in the elderly and is strongly associated with adverse outcomes, including increased mortality, longer ICU stays, and higher rates of infection. In addition, frailty, multimorbidity, and cognitive decline significantly contribute to the vulnerability of older pa

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex and the kidneys: what nephrologists need to know.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by the development of hamartomas in the central nervous system, heart, skin, lungs, and kidneys and other manifestations including seizures, cortical tubers, radial migration lines, autism and cognitive disability. The disease is associated with pathogenic variants in the TSC1 or TSC2 genes, resulting in the hyperactivation of the mTOR pathway, a key regulator of cell growth and metabolism. Consequently, the hyperactivation of the mTOR pathway leads to abnormal tissue proliferation and the development of solid tumo

Inverse correlation between Alzheimer's disease and cancer from the perspective of hypoxia.

Sporadic Alzheimer's disease and cancer remain epidemiologically inversely related, and exploring the reverse pathogenesis is important for our understanding of both. Cognitive dysfunctions in Alzheimer's disease (AD) might result from the depletion of adaptive reserves in the brain. Energy storage in the brain is limited and is dynamically regulated by neurovascular and neurometabolic coupling. The research on neurodegenerative diseases has been dominated by the neurocentric view that neuronal defects cause the diseases. However, the proposal of the 2-hit vascular hypothesis in AD led us to f

Cognitive exergame training and transcranial random noise stimulation effects on executive control in healthy young adults.

Objective: In the present study, we investigated the efficacy of transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) combined with an exergame training (physical exercise combined with a videogame) chosen as potential techniques to boost brain functioning and to promote plastic effects in healthy young adults. The aim was to improve the motor response speed and the response time when inhibition was required. Method: Forty-nine participants were randomly assigned to four conditions. The protocol consisted of eight sessions of exergame cognitive training (or no training) associated with the active or s

Counterfactual thoughts distinguish benign and malicious envy.

When people encounter others surpassing them in terms of an important quality, possession, or achievement, they often think about what might have happened differently so that they would have obtained a better outcome. Such upward counterfactual thoughts have been shown to contribute to the intensity of envy. We investigated whether specific counterfactual thoughts distinguish different forms of envy, namely benign envy, which entails upward motivation, and malicious envy-which entails hostility. A meta-analysis of 8 studies (1 preregistered, N = 1,264) of a first line of research supports that

Differences in neuroimaging features of early- versus late-onset nonfluent/agrammatic primary progressive aphasia.

This study investigated distinct neuroimaging features measured by cortical thickness and subcortical structural shape abnormality in early-onset (EO, onset age <65 years) and late-onset (LO, onset age ≥65 years) nonfluent/agrammatic variant of primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA) patients. Cortical thickness and subcortical structural shape analyses were performed using a surface-based method from 38 patients with nfvPPA and 76 cognitively normal individuals. To minimize the effects of physiological aging, we used W-scores in comparisons between the groups. The EO-nfvPPA group exhibited more

Ghosts in the nursery: An experimental investigation of a parent's own maltreatment experience, attention to infant faces, and dyadic reciprocity.

Previous studies have shown that the experience of childhood maltreatment can influence recognition and processing of emotional cues and that these effects can extend into adulthood. Such alterations in cognitive processing may have important implications for processing of infant affect and parenting behavior. This study investigated whether the experience of childhood maltreatment altered attentional processing of infant faces in a community sample of mothers, using an established visual search task. Increased scores on a measure of childhood maltreatment were associated with decreased prefer

Modeling specific phobias and posttraumatic stress disorder in rodents: the challenge to convey both cognitive and emotional features.

Aberrant emotional memory processing is a core, disabling feature of both specific phobias and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), two psychiatric diseases of significant prevalence and morbidity whose cognitive symptoms cannot be adequately treated by current psychopharmacological tools. Elucidating the neurobiological mechanisms involved in the etiology of these diseases is of great interest for the identification of new therapeutics that improve not only the symptomatology but also the full recovery from the pathology. To this aim, several animal models have been proposed based on substan
