A newly improved sliding tube for colonoscopy for keeping the sigmoid colon in a straight condition.

Although a sliding tube made of plastics is very effective to keep the sigmoid colon in a straight position, there is some difficulty in handling the colonoscope, being restricted by the length of the scope. For the purpose of covering the demerits of the conventional sliding tube, a new slit sliding tube which is made up of three parts was devised by us. After straightening the sigmoidal loop, the three parts of the apparatus are joined together. Then the slit sliding tube is inserted into the descending colon with safety and ease. By using the slit sliding tube, handling of the colonoscope i

Iatrogenic hemoperitoneum and sigmoid colon injury from malpositioned apomorphine infusion device in advanced Parkinson's disease.

Apomorphine pumps are increasingly used for the management of patients with advanced Parkinson's Disease. We report a unique case of hemoperitoneum and penetrating colonic injury resulting from malpositioning of a subcutaneous apomorphine device-a complication not previously described in the literature. Seventy-six-year-old man with advanced Parkinson's Disease presented with acute abdominal pain 3-hours post the re-siting of his apomorphine infusion device. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen and pelvis revealed high-density fluid (47-67 Hounsfield Units), consistent wit

Life-Threatening Lower GI Bleeding From Sigmoid Colon Metastasis of Cutaneous Angiosarcoma: A Case Report.

Angiosarcoma is a rare and aggressive malignancy of vascular endothelial origin, characterized by rapid progression and early metastatic dissemination. GI involvement is uncommon, and colonic metastasis from a cutaneous primary is exceptionally rare. We report the case of an 85-year-old man with a history of cutaneous angiosarcoma of the right cheek who presented with recurrent rectal bleeding and transfusion-dependent anemia. Colonoscopy demonstrated a large, ulcerated lesion in the sigmoid colon, causing luminal narrowing and active hemorrhage. Preoperative fluorodeoxyglucose PET-CT demonstr

Synchronous right colon adenocarcinoma and sigmoid endometriosis mimicking a second primary carcinoma: a case report.

Intestinal endometriosis is a benign gynecological condition that frequently involves the rectosigmoid colon. Its synchronous occurrence with colorectal cancer is exceptionally rare and diagnostically challenging, particularly when mimicking a second primary malignancy. We report a case of a 48-year-old woman presenting with altered bowel habits. Colonoscopy revealed synchronous lesions: an adenocarcinoma at the hepatic flexure and a suspicious mass in the sigmoid colon. Repeated biopsies of the sigmoid lesion were inconclusive, ranging from dysplasia to chronic inflammation, raising concern f

Ingested Foreign Bodies in the Sigmoid Colon Requiring Earlier Intervention in Patients With Prior Hysterectomy.

The use of dentures and dental plates is widespread in the adult population. Accidental ingestion of these foreign objects is not uncommon, with the majority of patients having an uneventful passage of the object through the gastrointestinal tract. Of those patients requiring intervention, endoscopy is the most common, followed by surgical removal. We discuss a case of a patient with prior pelvic surgery and diverticulosis causing severe angulation of the bowel, resulting in non-passage of the foreign object requiring surgical intervention.

Successful management of splenic artery dissection after sigmoid colon perforation in vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a genetic disorder that causes fragility of the systemic connective tissues. Of the 13 subtypes, vascular EDS (vEDS) is associated with abnormalities in collagen production, resulting in arterial rupture and intestinal perforation. Herein, we report the case of a man with confirmed vEDS who survived a ruptured dissected splenic artery aneurysm triggered by perforation of the sigmoid colon. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old man presented to our hospital with sudden severe lower abdominal pain. The patient was genetically diagnosed with vEDS at the age

Risk factors that impact long-term outcomes in sigmoid colon cancer with urinary bladder involvement.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the risk factors impacting long-term outcomes in patients diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer with urinary bladder involvement. METHODS: A comprehensive analysis was conducted on a retrospective cohort of 118 patients who underwent multivisceral resection for sigmoid colon cancer with urinary bladder involvement between June 2002 and May 2017. Univariate and multivariate analyses were employed to identify risk factors associated with long-term outcomes. RESULTS: Among the included patients, 10 (8.5%) experienced grade III-IV complications according to Cl

[Curative Resection of Sigmoid Colon Cancer with Multiple Liver Metastases by Long-Term Multidisciplinary Treatment].

A male patient in his 80s underwent colonic stenting for obstructive sigmoid colon cancer with multiple liver metastases. With systemic chemotherapy for approximately 1 year, the liver metastasis disappeared, so laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy was performed for the primary lesion. No recurrence was observed for a while, although CT revealed liver metastasis in the liver S4, and radiofrequency ablation was performed. Radiation therapy was performed for the liver metastasis of liver S2 that subsequently appeared. After a recurrence-free period of approximately 2 years, a rapid regrowth of liver m

Sigmoid volvulus and descending colon adenocarcinoma, a double cause of intestinal obstruction: a case report.

Large bowel obstruction is caused by colorectal cancer, diverticular disease or volvulus. The latter is caused by rotation of the intestinal loop on its own mesenteric axis, and occurs in the sigmoid colon (80%) and in the cecum (15-20%) Its management includes devolution by colonoscopy or surgery. Malignant bowel obstruction is the initial presentation in 7-29% of colorectal cancer, and its optimal treatment is controversial. We describe a clinical case of a double obstructive lesion and its surgical approach, an unusual presentation that poses a diagnostic and medical-surgical management cha

[A Case of Laparoscopic Surgery for Sigmoid Colon Cancer after Cystectomy and Ileal Conduit Construction].

We report a case of laparoscopic sigmoid colon resection for sigmoid colon cancer after cystectomy for bladder cancer and ileal conduit surgery for urinary tract reconstruction. The patient was a male in his 70s. The patient presented to the Department of Gastroenterology with the complaint of nausea and loss of appetite, and findings that were suspicious of intestinal obstruction. The diagnosis was obstructive sigmoid colon cancer. The patient had a history of bladder cancer and had undergone cystectomy and ileal conduit surgery. Intraoperatively, we considered placing a ureteral stent to ide

[A Case of Synchronous Solitary Splenic Metastasis of Sigmoid Colon Cancer Treated with Laparoscopic Resection].

An 82-year-old woman presented to our hospital with chief complaints of lower abdominal pain and nausea. Contrast- enhanced CT showed ileus of sigmoid colon cancer and a solitary splenic tumor. A metallic stent was placed for the primary lesion. FDG-PET showed high FDG accumulation in the solitary splenic tumor, and synchronous solitary splenic metastasis was diagnosed. Laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy and laparoscopic splenectomy were performed without changing the intraoperative position or port arrangement. Postoperative progress was favorable. The patient was discharged 9 days after surgery,

Atypical Pseudo-Meigs' Syndrome without Pleural Effusion Due to Ovarian Metastasis from Sigmoid Colon Cancer.

We herein report a case of atypical pseudo-Meigs' syndrome without pleural effusion. A 46-year-old woman was diagnosed with an ovarian tumor and sigmoid colon cancer with massive ascites. She underwent surgical resection of the sigmoid colon and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The pathological diagnosis was sigmoid colon cancer with ovarian metastasis. A few days after the operation, the massive ascites disappeared. Immunostaining for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) suggested its overproduction was involved in the development of the ascites. Although cases of pseudo-Meigs' syndrome

Extended Versus Standard Complete Mesocolon Excision in Sigmoid Colon Cancer: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether extended complete mesocolic excision (e-CME) for sigmoid colon cancer improves oncological outcomes without compromising morbidity or functional results. BACKGROUND: In surgery for cancer of the sigmoid colon and upper rectum, s-CME removes the lymphofatty tissue surrounding the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA), but not the lymphofatty tissue surrounding the portion of the inferior mesenteric vein that does not run parallel to the IMA. Evidence about the safety and efficacy of extending CME to include this tissue is lacking. METHODS: T

Laparoscopic Management of Concomitant Sigmoid Colon Cancer and Type 2 Endoleak Following Endovascular Aneurysm Repair.

The co-occurrence of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and colorectal malignancy creates a significant surgical dilemma over which entity should be addressed first. A 73-year-old male was referred to our hospital due to a painful pulsatile abdominal mass. Computed tomographic angiography revealed an infrarenal aortic aneurysm measuring 5.8 cm in diameter and incidentally, a synchronous mass lesion in the sigmoid colon. The patient underwent an emergency EVAR using a Gore Excluder endograft. Postoperative CT staging for colon cancer revealed a type 2 endoleak on the grounds of a patent wide infer

Recurrence of sigmoid colon cancer-derived anal metastasis: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Distant metastasis of colorectal cancer to the anus is very rare, with only 30 related cases published in PubMed thus far. Therefore, recurrence of colorectal cancer derived anus metastases is rarely seen and less presented. CASE SUMMARY: Here we report an 80-year-old male patient who underwent radical resection for sigmoid colon cancer in January 2010 and another surgery for anal fistula resection in December 2010. Postoperative pathology of the anal fistula revealed a metastatic moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. The patient subsequently received chemotherapy and radiothe
