Various species of ixodid ticks that have been recorded to attack man were surveyed, and boutonneuse fever caused by Rickettsia conorii, which is transmitted in Israel by Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l., is reviewed. Only in one case were a complement fixation test and exact determination of the species of the tick performed. Tick toxicosis and tick paralysis are discussed, and the possibility of human babesiosis and Lyme disease or erythema chronicum migrans appearing in Israel is considered.

Soluble yeast-phase (YPS) antigen preparations (Reeves et al., 1972) were obtained from three strains of Histoplasma capsulatum. Screening for antinuclear antibodies (ANA) with parallel tests for complement fixing ANA (C-ANA) reveal that C-ANA react either as strongly as or more strongly than ANA in most cases of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and related disorders including CREST syndrome. Granulomatous hepatitis as the sole manifestation of acute Q fever has been reported only rarely, although minimal hepatic dysfunction may be common in the acute disease. In this paper we report two patients with acute Q fever who presented with hepatitis; one of whom had granulomatous hepatitis on liver biopsy. We discuss the serological diagnosis of acute and chronic Q fever particularly in relation to hepatitis.
