fNIRS-STCT: A Novel Hybrid Spatial and Temporal CNN and Transformer Network for fNIRS Signal Classification.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive brain imaging method that detects neural activity by monitoring blood oxygen levels and circulation changes in the brain. Some current fNIRS classification models are simply adapted from deep learning models such as Transformer and fail to effectively leverage both temporal and spatial information from fNIRS. In this paper, we develop a hybrid deep learning model for fNIRS classification, fusing spatial convolutional neural network (CNN), a temporal CNN, and Transformer, named as fNIRS-STCT. Primarily, the architecture employs dua

High-Fidelity Weak Signal Extraction for Coiled Tubing Acoustic Telemetry via Micro-Lever Suspension and Joint Denoising.

In Coiled Tubing (CT) acoustic telemetry, the reliability of surface signal reception is severely challenged by the "contact dead zone" of traditional probes and complex nonstationary environmental noise. To address these issues, this paper proposes a hardware-software integrated solution for high-fidelity signal extraction. In terms of hardware, a novel pickup probe based on the micro-lever principle is developed. By utilizing a pivoted lever structure with an optimized arm ratio of 2.6 to 1 and a full pressure-balanced mechanism, the design physically overcomes the contact dead zone inherent

Evaluation of wastewater SARS-CoV-2 surveillance for monitoring COVID-19 trends and early warning in Sweden, 2023-2024.

Wastewater surveillance (WWS) of SARS-CoV-2 RNA levels offers a way to monitor virus circulation independently of clinical testing. With COVID-19 now endemic, clarifying the role of WWS within routine surveillance is essential. The aim was to evaluate the potential of WWS as an early warning indicator for COVID-19 in Sweden, based on its correlation with reported case data. The study includes data from July 2023 to December 2024, from 19 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), covering 43% of Sweden's population, and surveillance data of reported COVID-19 cases. Analyses were performed by WWTP, s

Transfersomes: The Ultra-Deformable Carrier System for Non-Invasive Delivery of Drug.

Vesicular systems have many advantages like prolonging the existence of the drug in the systemic circulation, minimizing the undesirable side-effects and helping the active moieties to reach their target sites using the carriers. However, the main drawback related to transdermal delivery is to cross stratum corneum, which can be overcome by the utilization of novel carrier systems e.g., transfersomes, which are ultra-deformable carrier systems composed of phospholipid (phosphatidylcholine) and edge activators (surfactants). Edge activators are responsible for the flexibility of the bilayer mem

A biomimetic microfluidic chip to study the circulation and mechanical retention of red blood cells in the spleen.

Red blood cells (RBCs) are deformable and flow through vessels narrower than their own size. Their deformability is most stringently challenged when they cross micrometer-wide slits in the spleen. In several inherited or acquired RBC disorders, blockade of small vessels by stiff RBCs can trigger organ damage, but a functional spleen is expected to clear these abnormal RBCs from the circulation before they induce such complications. We analyzed flow behavior of RBCs in a microfluidic chip that replicates the mechanical constraints imposed on RBCs as they cross the human spleen. Polymer microcha

Deletion of the C-terminal region of dengue virus nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) abolishes anti-NS1-mediated platelet dysfunction and bleeding tendency.

The mechanisms underlying dengue hemorrhagic disease are incompletely understood. We previously showed that anti-dengue virus (DV) nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) Abs cross-react with human platelets and inhibit platelet aggregation. Based on sequence homology alignment, the cross-reactive epitopes reside in the C-terminal region of DV NS1. In this study, we compared the effects of Abs against full-length DV NS1 and NS1 lacking the C-terminal aa 271 to 352 (designated DeltaC NS1). Anti-DeltaC NS1 Abs exhibited lower platelet binding activity than that of anti-full-length NS1. Anti-full-length NS

Locally applied cilostazol suppresses neointimal hyperplasia and medial thickening in a vein graft model.

BACKGROUND: Pathological changes in vein grafts begin immediately after arterial circulation is applied to the grafts. Chemical mediator stimulation and mechanical strain induce neointimal hyperplasia and medial thickening of the vein grafts, resulting in their failure. We investigated the inhibitory effect of locally applied cilostazol, an inhibitor of cyclic adenosine monophosphate phosphodiesterase III, on neointimal hyperplasia and medial thickening of the grafts. METHODS AND RESULTS: We established a distal anastomotic stricture model of femoral vein-abdominal aorta interposition graftin

Blood velocity patterns after aortic valve replacement with a pulmonary autograft.

OBJECTIVE: Besides several other advantages, aortic valve replacement with a pulmonary autograft may result in improved hemodynamic characteristics compared to other valve replacement procedures. However, this plausible assumption has never been verified. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine turbulent blood velocity energies in the ascending aorta after aortic valve replacement with a pulmonary autograft. METHODS: Blood velocity measurements were performed using a specialized pulsed Doppler ultrasound technique in the ascending aorta immediately after weaning from extracorporeal

Circulating endothelin in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.

Increased synthesis of endothelin, (a powerful physiological vasoconstrictor), is a uniform response to endothelial injury and has been associated with myocardial ischemia and reperfusion. This study tests the hypothesis that coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) affects endothelin plasma concentrations in various vascular beds. Twenty-four CABG patients were included in this study. Endothelin was determined in multiple plasma specimens obtained from superior vena cava, aortic root and coronary sinus (CS). Venous endothelin plasma concentrations collected in CABG patients before surgery were

Ischemic injury to the spinal cord or lumbosacral plexus after aorto-iliac reconstruction.

Between January 1, 1980, and June 30, 1989, 9 patients (6 males and 3 females) developed ischemic injury to the spinal cord or lumbosacral plexus following 3,320 operations on the abdominal aorta (0.3%). The incidence of this complication was 0.1% (2 of 1,901) after elective and 1.4% (3 of 210) after emergency abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, and 0.3% (4 of 1,209) after repair for occlusive disease. Three of the latter had prior clinical evidence of distal embolization. Eight grafts were bifurcated (aorto-iliac:four, aorto-femoral: three, aorto-ilio-femoral:one). One patient underwent extra-a

Two divergent BoHV-1 isolates from yaks show distinct biological properties and neutralization profiles.

Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) is a major cattle pathogen, yet its epidemiology and genetic diversity in yaks are poorly understood. In this study, we isolated and fully sequenced two BoHV-1 strains from yaks, namely BoHV-1/Yak/2025/2K (BoHV-1.1) and BoHV-1/Yak/2025/12 (BoHV-1.2), and confirmed their distinct lineages through phylogenetic analysis. Functional profiling revealed clear phenotypic differences: BoHV-1.1 replicated faster, targeted the lower respiratory tract, and caused more severe lung lesions in rabbits; BoHV-1.2 replicated preferentially in the upper respiratory and reprodu

Differentiation of West Nile and Usutu Virus Infections by Antibodies Directed to the Non-Structural Protein 1.

The genus Orthoflavivirus (family Flaviviridae) comprises several important pathogens that are widespread across the globe, often co-circulating in many regions. In Austria, the closely related mosquito-borne West Nile (WN) and Usutu (USU) viruses have been detected since the early 2000s. Orthoflavivirus-neutralizing antibodies primarily target the major envelope protein E. However, due to their antigenic relationship, recurring contacts with different orthoflaviviruses can lead to the induction of broadly cross-reactive E-specific antibodies. These can pose a problem in the diagnosis and diff

Engagement of complement receptor 2 on the surface of B cells from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus contributes to the increased responsiveness to antigen stimulation.

B cells from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) display increased responses following cross-linking of the surface antigen receptor. We explored the possibility that the increased responses are at least partially due to simultaneous cross-linking of the complement receptor 2 (CR2). To this end, we stimulated fresh B cells from SLE patients with an anti-IgD antibody conjugated to the Epstein-Barr virus gp350 protein, which binds to CR2, and recorded the free intracytoplasmic calcium response during the first 10 min. Despite the fact that SLE B cells were found to express half as m

Reversible association of the cytokines MIP-1 alpha and MIP-1 beta with the endothelia of the blood-brain barrier.

Macrophage inflammatory proteins (MIP)-1 alpha and -1 beta have been postulated to exert their pyrogenic effects by acting directly at sites within the brain. Such activity would require circulating MIP-1s to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). We examined the ability of the monomer and polymer of MIP-1 alpha and the polymer of MIP-1 beta radioactively labeled with 125iodine (I-MIP-1) to cross the BBB. These I-MIP-1s behaved very similarly to each other but in a manner not previously seen for other cytokines. The I-MIP-1s immediately associated to a high degree and in a reversible manner with

Monoclonal antibodies to cyclosporin are representative of the major antibody populations present in antisera of immunized mice.

Two series of mouse antisera raised against cyclosporin (Cs)-carrier conjugates exposing opposite sides of the Cs molecule and more than sixty monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) derived from the same animals were compared in terms of isotype and fine specificity for Cs. The predominant isotypes of the mAbs reflected the in situ distribution of the circulating anti Cs antibodies. The fine specificity of the antibodies was studied by determining their cross-reactivity for a series of Cs-derivatives and Cs-metabolites in competitive ELISA. The antisera raised by different immunizations showed very diff

Soluble PD-1/PD-L1 biomarkers in NSCLC: prognostic and diagnostic value.

BACKGROUND: Tissue-based immunohistochemistry (IHC) for programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) remains the clinical standard for guiding immunotherapy selection in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) but is constrained by intratumoral spatial heterogeneity and procedural sampling risks. Circulating soluble PD-1 (sPD-1) and soluble PD-L1 (sPD-L1) generated either through alternative mRNA splicing or by ADAM10/17-mediated proteolytic shedding offer minimally invasive liquid-biopsy alternatives that capture systemic immune dynamics in real time. METHODS: This review synthesizes clinical and translatio

Liquid biopsy cell-free RNA-based machine learning enables preoperative risk-stratification of uterine leiomyosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Accurate preoperative distinction between uterine leiomyoma and uterine leiomyosarcoma remains a major clinical challenge. Misclassification can lead to inadvertent dissemination of occult malignancy during minimally invasive procedures, while cautious management increases the use of more invasive surgery with greater morbidity. Current diagnostic approaches, including imaging and serum biomarkers, lack sufficient accuracy and standardized criteria. Circulating cell-free RNA in plasma represents a promising alternative for noninvasive tumor classification, but its clinical utility

People living with lower extremity peripheral artery disease demonstrate vascular regenerative cell deficiencies: The PAD-VRCE CardioLink-17 study.

OBJECTIVE: Vascular regenerative cell exhaustion (VRCE), a shift in the circulating progenitor cell profile, has been linked with adverse cardiometabolic outcomes. Whether VRCE is also involved in the pathogenesis and vascular repair mechanisms of peripheral artery disease (PAD) is unknown. In this study, we sought to compare the circulating vascular regenerative cell content of adults living with PAD with those without PAD. METHODS: PAD-VRCE CardioLink-17 (NCT06626646) was an observational cross-sectional study of 20 adults with symptomatic PAD and 20 without PAD. Circulating progenitor cell
