We report a rare case of choledochal cyst with acute cholangitis that was diagnosed at 37 weeks' gestation and treated by laparoscopic choledochal resection and biliary reconstruction after delivery. A 31-year-old Japanese primigravida at 37 weeks' gestation presented with right upper quadrant pain. The patient was diagnosed as having acute cholangitis due to a type-Ia choledochal cyst, according to the Todani classification, with pancreaticobiliary maljunction. Acute cholangitis improved with conservative treatment, the fetus was delivered by Cesarean section at 38 weeks' gestation, and the p

BACKGROUND: Pineal lesions are common causes of dorsal midbrain syndrome and typically require surgical intervention in symptomatic patients. We describe a unique case of spontaneous resolution of dorsal midbrain syndrome resulting from a pineal gland cyst.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 23-year-old woman developed a supranuclear upgaze palsy, convergence-retraction nystagmus, and light-near dissociation from a pineal gland cyst (1.0 × 1.3 × 1.2 cm) with mild mass effect on the posterior surface of the tectum. Seven days after symptom onset, she had complete, spontaneous resolution of her symptoms, and

Conjunctival orbital cysts are rare; they are typically either conjunctival dermoid or conjunctival epithelial cysts - congenital or acquired (inclusion). We describe the case of a 15-month-old girl presenting with strabismus and proptosis who had a retrobulbar intraconal cystic lesion displacing the optic nerve, with an adjacent middle cranial fossa anomaly. Aspiration of the orbital cyst tested positive for asialotransferrin, raising the suspicion of a direct communication with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Subsequent fine cut CT scanning disproved any connection with the intracranial space, an

OBJECTIVE: Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) myelography scans demonstrated a dural defect in a 50-year-old man with an epidural arachnoid cyst who had a 29-year history of untreated weakness and numbness both lower limbs.
METHODS: MRI scans showed a dorsal intraspinal extradural cystic lesion at the level from Th11 to L1. Although preoperative cine-MRI scans failed to display the dural defect, an MRI myelography scan showed cerebrospinal fluid in the subarachnoid space containing a cyst.
RESULTS: The site of shunting between the subarachnoid space and the cyst was visualized as

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pancreatic cystic neoplasms (PCNs) often need interval surveillance, including repeat EUS, but the role of repeat FNA w … of 400 patients with PCNs underwent EUS-FNA. Eighty-seven of those patients had prior EUS-FNA with cyst fluid analysis. Patients with repeat FNA were significantly more likely to have multiple cysts (57% vs 41%; P = .008), multilocular cysts (75% vs 62%; P = .042), connection to pancreatic duct (33% vs 18%; P = .005), and higher initial CEA levels (94.8 vs …

BACKGROUND: Posterior fossa arachnoid cysts are often asymptomatic, but can rarely cause postural headache, the mechanism of which remains unknown.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a 40-year-old woman with an asymptomatic supracerebellar arachnoid cyst. Upright computed tomography (CT) showed enlargement of the arachnoid cyst and caudal descent of the cerebellum compared with supine CT with narrowing of the craniocervical junction cerebrospinal fluid space.
CONCLUSIONS: This finding aids in understanding the association of posterior fossa arachnoid cysts with orthostatic headache. Clinicians sho

Mesenteric cysts are not uncommon in pediatric age group but giant lymphatic cysts of mesentery are reported infrequently. This is a report of six years old female who had vague abdominal pain with distension for two years. Investigations revealed a large cystic mass in abdomen. On exploration a giant lymphatic cyst in the mesentery of transverse colon found. More than 1500 ml of milky fluid was drained. The cyst was unilocular and appeared to be the collection of lymph (chyle) between two leaves of the mesentery of transverse colon. It is postulated that trauma to or malformation of lymphatic

Intracranial arachnoid cysts are cerebrospinal fluid-filled collections between arachnoid layers. While many are silent, arachnoid cysts can become symptomatic if there is sudden expansion, haemorrhage or rupture with the development of subdural hygroma or subdural hematoma. Several studies have demonstrated the association of arachnoid cysts with subdural hygroma and subdural hematoma. We describe a 9-year-old girl with a moderate-sized middle-fossa arachnoid cyst and bilateral frontal subdural hygroma presenting with raised intracranial pressure. She was treated with acetazolamide which resu

Chronic infection by Echinococcus granulosus leads to the establishment of fluid-filled cysts (hydatid cysts) in the liver or lungs of infected hosts, which can escape destruction by the host immune system for long periods. Ag5 is abundantly expressed in the cyst fluid of the fine-grained E. granulosus and plays an important role in immune tolerance in cystic echinococcosis. However, the role that Ag5 plays in monocytes is not fully known. Here, the expression characteristics and function of Ag5 were explored in human monocytic THP-1 cells by various assays. The findings of the present study r…

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common, inherited disorder characterized by the progressive enlargement of fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys and liver. Since the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) Cl--channel may mediate the secretion of Cl--and fluid into the cysts, it is conceivable that coexisting cystic fibrosis (CF) in patients with ADPKD could attenuate their development. We previously reported that two patients with ADPKD coexisting with cystic fibrosis (CF) had a milder cystic phenotype than that of kindred without CFTR mutations. A sub

OBJECTIVE: To determine the imaging features and useful therapeutic methods of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC).
METHODS: The radiographs, CT, and MR scans of 82 cases of pathologically proved ABC were retrospectively analyzed. Post-therapeutic follow-up of 45 cases was carried out for 3 months to 24 years.
RESULTS: Plain radiographs showed eccentric expansile osteolysis in most cases. Fluid-fluid level was seen in 21/27 cases on CT scans, and calcification or ossification in 11/27 cases. MR images showed a hypointense rim in 7/7 cases, multilocular hyperintense cysts with hypointense septae on T2

Dermoid and epidermoid cysts are developmental pathologies that occur in the head and neck with an incidence ranging from 1.6 to 6.9%, and they represent less than 0.01% of all oral cavity cysts. Our purpose is to report a case of sublingual epidermoid cyst of the floor of the mouth. We studied and operated on an 18-year-old white male patient showing a large swelling of oral floor. His main symptoms were difficulty breathing, swallowing, and speaking. At his birth the patient's tongue was adherent to the floor of the mouth. His father had the same problem at birth. Both father and son underwe

Ovarian cysts from 27 selected patients were examined cytologically as well as histologically. The aspirates were obtained by means of ultrasound or laparoscopy. Cytological examination in 17 of the cases did not show malignancy, but histological examination demonstrated malignancy in 5 of these patients. The fluid of the other 10 cysts indicated malignancy, which was confirmed histologically in only 4 cases. From this study we conclude that cytological examination has little to offer in diagnosing the true nature of ovarian cysts.

Two cases of aneurysmal bone cyst of the jaws, one in the mandible and the other in the maxilla, are reported in young girls 7 and 15 years old. One was a primary lesion; the other was associated with fibrous dysplasia. In both cases CT and MR demonstrated characteristic fluid-fluid levels. The diagnosis was confirmed after biopsy and surgical resection of the lesions.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial arachnoid cysts are benign collections of cerebrospinal fluid that are often asymptomatic and discovered incidentally. An interhemispheric location of these lesions is rare, with only a few such cases reported in the literature. Though spontaneous regression of arachnoid cysts has been described in other locations, to date this phenomenon has not been reported in interhemispheric fissure cysts.
OBSERVATIONS: In this report, we describe a patient with a large, multiloculated interhemispheric arachnoid cyst diagnosed on prenatal ultrasound. She did not exhibit neurologi

An intracranial arachnoid cyst (IAC) is a rare developmental disorder that is consistent with cerebrospinal fluid accumulation between the brain and the arachnoid membrane. A quadrigeminal cyst is a specific type of cyst that is identified based on its localization. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report on this type of pathology in a Brussels Griffon. This case study describes an 11-month-old female Brussels Griffon with symptoms of reluctance to lower the head and eat from a bowl placed on the ground, combined with episodes of vocalization. The patient was subsequent

OBJECTIVE: To describe the efficacy of the sclerosing agent 1% polidocanol in the treatment of a suspected nasolacrimal duct cyst in a dog.
ANIMAL STUDIED: A 5-year-old castrated male Golden Retriever with chronic epiphora of the right eye.
PROCEDURES: Ocular examination revealed epiphora and a negative Jones test of the right eye and was otherwise normal. Computed tomography with dacryocystography confirmed a cystic structure in the right ventral orbit that extended into the caudal nasal cavity adjacent to the orbit, causing partial physical obstruction of the right nasolacrimal duct. Cyst infection is a diagnostic challenge in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) because of the lack of specific manifestations and limitations of conventional imaging procedures. Still, recent clinical observations and series have highlighted common criteria for this condition. Cyst infection is diagnosed if confirmed by cyst fluid analysis showing bacteria and neutrophils, and as a probable diagnosis if all four of the following criteria are concomitantly met: temperature of >38°C for >3 days, loin or liver tenderness, C-reactive protein plasma level of >5 mg/dL…

Hydatid cyst is a disease caused by a parasitic tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus, and most commonly involves liver and lung. Ruptured pulmonary hydatid cyst can present a diagnostic challenge, and radiograph can be inconclusive. Anaphylactic reaction is a rare complication of ruptured pulmonary hydatid cyst. A 22-year-old male came to our emergency department in shock with symptoms of shortness of breath and altered mental status from the previous day. Radiograph showed a thin-walled circular translucent area in the right upper lung field, which was misdiagnosed as pneumothorax, and an interc
