Drug eruptions from indeginous medicine is often difficult to diagnosis and confirm. It is known that a number of these now supplied by bomohs and Chinese sinsehs contain known drugs and are dispensed as tablets and capsules. We report 3 cases of adverse drug eruption to "Jamu", a Malay herb. A particular brand, "Jamu Indonesia, Toko Air Pancur", from Johor Bahru, Malaysia, is especially recommended for "sakit pinggang" or backache. Three cases of generalized exfoliative staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) were encountered during a 25-day period in a nursery for premature infants. Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS) is a rare and potentially fatal reaction characterized by fever, rash, and internal organ involvement that typically occurs between 3 and 6 weeks after commencing the drug. Diaminodiphenyl sulphone (dapsone) is a drug of choice in the treatment of leprosy. It is also useful for the treatment of many neutrophilic and other dermatoses. This study examines skin rash, as a reported event, in the patients who used one of the 36 drugs recently released to the UK market and studied by Prescription-Event Monitoring between 1985 and 1992. The results are also compared to the voluntary reports on rash as a possible adverse drug reaction sent to the Committee on Safety of Medicines (CSM). Specific types of skin rash (e.g. exfoliative dermatitis) are excluded. Thirty-seven dogs with pemphigus foliaceus were seen over a span of 9 years in a veterinary medical teaching hospital. Four breeds of dogs (Bearded Collie, Akita, Newfoundland, Schipperke) were at significant elevated risk when compared with both the dermatology canine case population and the hospital canine population. The mean age of onset was 4.2 years. The dorsal part of the muzzle was the most common site of initial involvement in over 50% of the dogs, and lesions of the head were seen first in 81% of the dogs.
