Diets deficient in copper and zinc?

Hospital diets, and, perhaps, diets in general may be low in copper and zinc, with the diets being lower in copper than zinc in comparison to requirements. Several human diseases or pathologic conditions of unknown etiology have similarities to findings in deficient animals. Thus nutritional status and metabolism of copper may be important in anemia, ischemic heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis. Zinc may be involved in growth failure, acne, difficulties of labor, congenital abnormalities and wound healing. Whether or not dietary amoun

Otitis externa.

Otitis externa is a widespread condition which may occur in many different forms. Allergic reactions, bacteria, pathologic changes secondary to seborrheic dermatitis, and fungi, singly or in association with each other, are among the causative factors considered. In the treatment of this condition, the diversity of causative factors which may be present must be recognized and evaluated; after one factor has been eliminated, another often remains to be conquered. The apparent confusion of reports regarding etiology and treatment is in fact due to confusion regarding the fundamental nature of th

Mucocutaneous manifestations in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

BACKGROUND: Mucocutaneous manifestations are one of the first clinical signs in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). To the best of our knowledge, there has been no previous study describing dermatologic manifestations in Mauritanians infected with HIV. The aim of the present study was to determine the profiles of mucocutaneous manifestations in relation to CD4 T cell count in HIV-positive Mauritanian patients. METHODS: A total of 86 adult patients aged > 18 years old attending the Ambulatory Treatment Center of the National Hospital of Nouakchott, Mauritania, with newly

Two-month-old with diffuse erythema: A case report.

We present a case of a 2-month-old female with an acute onset and rapidly progressing diffuse erythroderma involving the scalp, face, neck folds, torso, and groin. She had a history of seborrheic and diaper dermatitis and developed a worsening rash that initially appeared as a "blister-like" lesion on the cheek. Examination revealed greasy yellow scaling and intertriginous erythema. Workup ruled out herpes simplex virus/varicella-zoster virus, and blood cultures grew presumed contaminant Staphylococcus epidermidis. She was treated empirically with antibiotics, antivirals, anti-fungals, and top

Differences between pediatric and adult atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common disease with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. AD can manifest differently in adults than children. Core AD features are similar between children and adults overall, including lesions affecting flexural areas, presence of atopy, and xerosis. Adults have more signs of chronic disease, higher prevalence and different patterns of hand eczema, and a stronger relationship of disease activity with emotional factors, whereas children with AD have more exudative lesions, perifollicular accentuation, pityriasis alba, Dennie-Morgan folds, and seborrheic derm

The importance and perspective of plant-based squalene in cosmetology.

Squalene is a highly unsaturated hydrocarbon from triterpenoid family, discovered as a major component of the liver oil of certain varieties of deep sea sharks. In the interest of protecting biodiversity, raw materials of animal origin must be replaced by alternative sources that respect our environment. Squalene is widely present as a component of the unsaponifiable fraction of vegetable oils (i.e., olive oil, amaranth oil). Amaranth oil seems to be the key source of squalene. Amaranth grains contains 7-7.7% lipids, and these lipids are extremely valuable because of the presence of ingredient

Common Dermatoses in Children Referred to a Specialized Pediatric Dermatology Service in Mexico: A Comparative Study between Two Decades.

Background. Skin diseases among pediatric patients differ from those in adults. Epidemiological studies are scarce, and those performed in Mexican population date back thirty years. It is likely that these diseases might have changed their frequency. Material and Methods. Retrospective study in first-time patients referred to a pediatric dermatology service between January 1994 and December 2003. Demographics and diagnosis were recorded and compared with the results of a previous study performed in the same institution. Results. We included 5250 patients (52.55% female, 47.47% male) with 6029

Hailey-Hailey.

An 18-year-old white man with a "rash" on his forehead, neck, and upper part of the back for more than 5 years presented to the dermatology clinic complaining of chronic irritation and burning in these locations. He first became aware of the problem while playing football when he noticed that areas where his shoulder pads and helmet contacted his skin were red and irritated. He was treated by his primary care physician for contact dermatitis, and the areas partially responded to mild topical corticosteroids and emollients. Symptomatic worsening of the lesions, including increasing burning pain

The genetic diversity of clinical isolates of Malassezia pachydermatis from dogs and cats.

Molecular investigation of 110 clinical isolates of non-lipid-dependent Malassezia pachydermatis from dogs and cats was carried out by random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and chitin synthase 2 (CHS2) gene sequence analyses. The RAPD analysis indicated that the clinical isolates of M. pachydermatis constituted four distinct genetic types (A, B, C and D). Moreover, the results from CHS2 gene analysis completely agreed with those from the RAPD analyses. The clinical isolates of M. pachydermatis were obtained from normal external ears, lesions of atopic dermatitis, flea allergic dermati

Superficial Mycoses Associated with Diaper Dermatitis.

Diapers create particular conditions of moisture and friction, and with urine and feces come increased pH and irritating enzymes (lipases and proteases). Fungi can take advantage of all these factors. Candida yeasts, especially C. albicans, are responsible for the most frequent secondary infections and are isolated in more than 80 % of cases. Correct diagnosis is important for ensuring the correct prescription of topical antimycotics. Nystatin, imidazoles and ciclopirox are effective. It is important to realize there are resistant strains. Dermatophytes can infect the diaper area, with the mos

Malassezia skin diseases in humans.

Although Malassezia yeasts are a part of the normal microflora, under certain conditions they can cause superficial skin infection, such as pityriasis versicolor (PV) and Malassezia folliculitis. Moreover the yeasts of the genus Malassezia have been associated with seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and, less commonly, with confluent and reticulated papillomatosis, onychomycosis, and transient acantholytic dermatosis. The study of the clinical role of Malassezia species has been surrounded by controversy due to the relative difficulty in isolation, cultivation, a

Halo eczema surrounding seborrhoeic keratoses: an example of perilesional nummular dermatitis.

Two patients developed halo eczema around isolated seborrhoeic keratoses and in one individual similar halo eczema developed around the nipples. This phenomenon which was previously described with melanocytic naevi has been associated with a number of different central lesions and can be readily recognised. Both the clinical pattern and histopathology suggest that this phenomenon may represent a localised form of nummular dermatitis with a predilection for elevated lesions.

The use of halcinonide solution, 0.1 percent, in the treatment of eczematous diseases.

Halcinonide solution, 0.1 percent, was used to treat sixty-six patients with eczematous dermatoses. The majority of the responses were excellent, with the condition clearing completely in eight patients within the first week. The total mean amount of medication used by each patient for twice a day application for one or two weeks was less than 24 ml.
