Assessing the influence of preconception diet on male fertility: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The last decade has seen increased research on the relationship between diet and male fertility, but there are no clearly defined nutritional recommendations for men in the preconception period to support clinical fertility outcomes. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE: The purpose of this scoping review is to examine the extent and range of research undertaken to evaluate the effect(s) of diet in the preconception period on male clinical fertility and reproductive outcomes. SEARCH METHODS: Four electronic databases (MEDLINE and EMBASE via Ovid, CAB Direct, and CINAHL via EBSCO) were searche

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and the Effects of a Ketogenic Diet: A Scoping Review.

Background/Objectives: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy experienced by females. Diagnosis of PCOS is established when at least two of the following are present: hyperandrogenism, oligo-anovulation, and/or polycystic ovaries. Conservative treatment for PCOS includes dietary modifications and physical activity. The purpose of this scoping review was to evaluate the efficacy of a ketogenic diet in improving biochemical measures and reducing the severity of PCOS symptoms. Methods: CINAHL, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases were searched to find research publishe

A Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial Examining the Benefit of a Neutropenic Diet for Children Undergoing Cancer Treatment.

Neutropenic diet(ND) has been hypothesized to decrease the rate of febrile neutropenia(FN) occurring post-chemotherapy for pediatric cancers. Despite widespread use, it has not shown to be of benefit by randomized controlled trials(RCT) in western countries. No RCT has been conducted in India/LMIC to evaluate its efficacy against the standard Indian diet. Forty-two(42) children, aged 3-14 y, with cancer, scheduled to receive strongly myelosuppressive chemotherapy were randomized to receive either neutropenic diet(n = 21) or standard Indian diet(n = 21) for one chemotherapeutic cycle. Selective Regional Alteration of the Gut Microbiota by Diet and Antibiotics.

The small intestinal microbiota has recently been implicated in contributing to metabolic disease. We previously demonstrated that diets rich in saturated milk fat have a particularly strong impact on the small bowel microbiota as opposed to more distal gastrointestinal (GI) regions. However, the impact of antibiotics and diet on the small bowel microbiota has not been clearly demonstrated. Thus, we sought to determine how diet and antibiotics interact in modulating the regional landscape of the gut microbiota. We conducted a study using male mice on a high fat (HF) or a low fat (LF) diet (n =

Effects of Fish Oil Supplementation on Reducing the Effects of Paternal Obesity and Preventing Fatty Liver in Offspring.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a serious public health concern, which calls for appropriate diet/nutrition intervention. Fish oil (FO) has several benefits in reducing obesity, but its intergenerational role in reducing the effects of paternal obesity has not been established. Hence, we hypothesized that FO supplementation to an obese father during the pre-conceptional period could improve the metabolic health of the offspring, specifically in the liver. Three groups of male mice were fed with a low-fat (LF), high-fat (HF), or high-fat diet supplemented with FO (HF-FO) for 10 week

Preventive Effects of Sesamol on Deep-Frying Oil-Induced Liver Metabolism Disorders by Altering Gut Microbiota and Protecting Gut Barrier Integrity.

SCOPE: The total polar components (TPC) in the edible oil are produced during the frying process, and excessive intake of TPC may lead to metabolic disorders. This study aims to investigate the preventive effects of sesamol, a functional component from sesame, on suppressing TPC production, and on the deep-frying oil (DFO)-induced liver lipid metabolism disorders and gut homeostasis disruption. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sesamol addition (0.2 mg mL-1 ) improves the quality of the soybean oil by reducing the production of TPC during the deep-frying process (180 °C for 40 h). The diet-induced obesity

Reducing Caloric Intake Prevents Ischemic Injury and Myocardial Dysfunction and Affects Anesthetic Cardioprotection in Type 2 Diabetic Rats.

Background. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) increases the risk of myocardial ischemia, followed by increased perioperative risk of cardiovascular morbidity. We investigated whether reducing caloric intake reduces ischemic injury and myocardial dysfunction and affects the protective effects of the volatile anesthetic sevoflurane in diet-induced T2DM rats. Methods. Rats received a western (WD) or control diet (CD). Caloric intake was reduced by reversing WD-fed rats to CD. Myocardial function was determined with echocardiography. After 8 weeks of diet feeding, myocardial infarction was induced a

Introduction to the yogurt in nutrition initiative and the First Global Summit on the health effects of yogurt.

Yogurt has been part of the human diet for thousands of years, and during that time a number of health benefits have been associated with its consumption. The goal of the First Global Summit on the Health Effects of Yogurt was to review and evaluate the strength of current scientific knowledge with regard to the health benefits of yogurt and to identify areas where further research is needed. The evidence base for the benefits of yogurt in promoting bone health, maintaining health throughout the life cycle, improving diet quality, and reducing the incidence of chronic diseases, such as obesity

Options for pharmacological management of obesity in patients treated with atypical antipsychotics.

Obesity is associated with considerable morbidity and decreased life expectancy. Weight gain is a commonly encountered problem associated with antipsychotic treatment. We reviewed the literature regarding the mechanisms of weight gain in response to these agents and eight substances implicated as potential obesity prevention or treatment: orlistat, sibutramine, fluoxetine, topiramate, amantadine, nizatidine and cimetidine, and metformin. Weight gain in response to antipsychotic treatment may be mediated through serotonergic, dopaminergic, adrenergic, cholinergic, histaminergic and glutaminergi

Light aerobic physical exercise in combination with leucine and/or glutamine-rich diet can improve the body composition and muscle protein metabolism in young tumor-bearing rats.

Nutritional supplementation with some amino acids may influence host's responses and also certain mechanism involved in tumor progression. It is known that exercise influences body weight and muscle composition. Previous findings from our group have shown that leucine has beneficial effects on protein composition in cachectic rat model as the Walker 256 tumor. The main purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of light exercise and leucine and/or glutamine-rich diet in body composition and skeletal muscle protein synthesis and degradation in young tumor-bearing rats. Induction of osteoarthritis and metabolic inflammation by a very high-fat diet in mice: effects of short-term exercise.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypotheses that obesity due to a very high-fat diet induces knee osteoarthritis (OA), and that short-term wheel-running exercise protects against obesity-induced knee OA by reducing systemic inflammation and metabolic dysregulation. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed either a control diet (13.5% kcal from fat) or a very high-fat diet (60% kcal from fat) from age 12 weeks to age 24 weeks. From 20 to 24 weeks of age, half of the mice were housed with running wheels. The severity of knee OA was determined by assessing histopathologic features, and serum cytokines were me

The effect of diet-induced weight loss on circulating homocysteine levels in people with obesity and type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Having type 2 diabetes (T2D) in combination with being overweight results in an additional increase in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. In addition, T2D and obesity are associated with increased levels of total homocysteine (tHcy), possibly contributing to the CVD risk. Weight loss dieting has positive effects on several CVD risk factors, but whether it affects tHcy remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of a calorie restricted diet on tHcy in overweight people with T2D. METHODS: In this post-hoc analysis of the POWER study, adults wit

A randomized controlled trial on a multicomponent intervention for overweight school-aged children - Copenhagen, Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Obesity amongst children is a growing problem worldwide. In contrast to adults, little is known on the effects of controlled weight loss on components of the metabolic syndrome in children. The primary aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of a 20-week exercise and diet guidance intervention on body mass index (BMI) in a group of overweight children. Our hypothesis was an observed reduction in BMI and secondarily in body fat content, insulin insensitivity, and other components of the metabolic syndrome in the intervention group. METHODS: School children from Copenhagen were

Obesity consults--comprehensive obesity management in 2013: understanding the shifting paradigm.

Although serious health concerns are associated with obesity, losing even 5% of body weight can produce clinically relevant effects. The initial goal of obesity management is usually a 5% to 10% weight reduction. Some people will sustain weight loss with changes in diet and exercise alone; however, these patients represent the minority, and a large percentage are unable to maintain weight loss over time. Patients and providers often wish to intensify obesity treatment, and therefore interest in new medications has been considerable. Until recently, only two antiobesity medications have receive
