Widespread Antioxidants during Storm Events Could Serve as Precursors of Regulated, Priority, and New Disinfection Byproducts.

Widely used antioxidants can enter the environment via urban stormwater systems and form disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during chlorination in downstream drinking water processes. Herein, we comprehensively investigated the occurrence of 39 antioxidants from stormwater runoff to surface water. After a storm event, the concentrations of the antioxidants in surface water increased by 1.4-fold from 102-110 ng/L to 128-139 ng/L. Widespread antioxidants during the stormwater event could transform into toxic DBPs during disinfection. Moreover, the yields of trihalomethanes, haloacetaldehydes, haloac

Microplastics and volatile organic compounds released from face masks after disinfection: Layers and materials differences.

Effective disinfection methods are critical for ensuring the reusability of masks, yet these methods may inadvertently introduce health concerns associated with microplastics (MPs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study investigated the impact of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) bleaching on mask filter layers composed of four distinct materials. Our results revealed that UVGI induced more pronounced damage compared to bleaching, leading to the significant release of both MPs and VOCs. After UVGI treatment at conventional disinfection doses,

Ultraviolet light C prototype device against Sporothrix brasiliensis as a potential physical method for surface disinfection.

Sporothrix brasiliensis is recognized as an emergent fungal pathogen and the high amount of fungal propagules in the lesions of infected cats allows the contamination of surfaces by direct contact. Given that the environment can play a role in the transmission of this fungus, effective methods to eliminate this pathogen from contaminated surfaces are necessary. Physical methods, such as ultraviolet light C (UVC), are broad used for surfaces disinfection, however, non-data about its activity against S. brasiliensis is reported. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate an easy handled prototype of a UVC

Non-regulated haloaromatic water disinfection byproducts act as endocrine and lipid disrupters in human placental cells.

The disinfection of drinking water generates hundreds of disinfection byproducts (DBPs), including haloaromatic DBPs. These haloaromatic DBPs are suspected to be more toxic than haloaliphatic ones, and they are currently not regulated. This work investigates their toxicity and ability to interfere with estrogen synthesis in human placental JEG-3 cells, and their genotoxic potential in human alveolar A549 cells. Among the haloaromatic DBPs studied, halobenzoquinones (2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (DCBQ) and 2,6-dibromo-1,4-benzoquinone (DBBQ)) showed the highest cytotoxicity (EC50: 18-26 μg/mL)

Novel photoelectrochemical 3D-system for water disinfection by deposition of modified carbon nitride on vitreous carbon foam.

Graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) is an optical semiconductor with excellent photoactivity under visible light irradiation. It has been widely applied for organic micropollutant removal from contaminated water, and less investigated for microorganisms' inactivation. The photocatalytic degradation mechanism using GCN is attributed to a series of reactions with reactive oxygen species and photogenerated holes that can be boosted by modifying its physical-chemical structure. This work reports a successful improvement of the overall photocatalytic and electrocatalytic activities of the pristine mater
