Survey of Clinical Knowledge and Procedural Readiness of Pulmonary Fellows to Start Interventional Pulmonary Fellowship: A Survey of Interventional Pulmonary Fellowship Directors.

BACKGROUND: Entry into the interventional pulmonary (IP) fellowship requires prerequisite training in pulmonary and critical care medicine (PCCM) fellowship in the United States. IP fellowship has become standardized, but the prerequisite training may be quite variable depending on the learner's exposure to IP during their PCCM fellowship. A survey study was conducted to identify potential foundational knowledge and/or skills gaps of new fellows entering IP fellowships. This may help both PCCM and IP fellowship directors to identify common knowledge gaps within PCCM training specific to IP. M

Buprenorphine and Opioid Use Disorder Training: Graduate Nursing Curricula Recommendations.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a public health emergency, with a shortage of providers trained to prescribe buprenorphine for OUD treatment. We conducted a systematic review to examine advanced practice RN (APRN) and medical school programs that included OUD content or Drug Addiction Treatment Act waiver training and evaluate the outcomes of those curricular modifications. APRN and medical school programs that provided OUD content or waiver training saw improvements in students' knowledge and self-efficacy for managing buprenorphine treatment and reduced stigma toward individuals with OUD. Stude

Dr. ChatGPT: Utilizing Artificial Intelligence in Surgical Education.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to explore the unexamined capabilities of ChatGPT in describing the surgical steps of a specialized operation, the Fisher cleft lip repair. DESIGN: A chat log within ChatGPT was created to generate the procedural steps of a cleft lip repair utilizing the Fisher technique. A board certified craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgeon then wrote the Fisher repair in his own words blinded to the ChatGPT response. Using both responses, a voluntary survey questionnaire was distributed to residents of plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS), general surgery (GS), internal medici

Cadaver Simulation is Associated with Increased Comfort in Performing Open Vascular Surgery Among Integrated Vascular Surgery (0+5) Residents and Recent Graduates.

BACKGROUND: With the evolution in vascular surgery toward increased endovascular therapy and decreased open surgical training, comfort with open procedures by current trainees is declining. A proposed method to improve this discomfort is simulator training. We hypothesized that open, cadaver, and endovascular surgery simulation would be associated with increased self-perceived comfort in performing corresponding procedures. METHODS: Integrated (0 + 5) vascular surgery residents and recent graduates in the United States were asked to complete a survey quantifying comfort via a Likert scale wit

[Burn-out, commitment, personality and experiences during work and training; survey among psychiatry residents].

BACKGROUND: In the last few years international studies have reported on increase in burn-out and depressive symptoms among psychiatry residents. In the field of research, however, commitment and dedication are now being mentioned more frequently as positive factors that counterbalance burn-out. AIM: To find out how a group of Dutch psychiatry residents feel about their work, to discover their degree of burn-out and commitment and to clarify the various factors involved. METHOD: 59 psychiatry residents from four teaching hospitals were asked to complete questionnaires concerning burn-out (U-

Program Characteristics Influencing Allopathic Students' Residency Selection.

CONTEXT: Medical students must consider many overt variables when entering the National Resident Matching Program. However, changes with the single graduate medical education accreditation system have caused a gap in knowledge about more subtle considerations, including what, if any, influence the presence of osteopathic physician (ie, DO) and international medical graduate (IMG) house officers has on allopathic students' residency program preferences. Program directors and selection committee members may assume students' implicit bias without substantiating evidence. OBJECTIVE: To reexamine

Defining the acute care surgery curriculum.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to define the gaps in essential and desirable (E/D) case volumes that may prompt reevaluation of the acute care surgery (ACS) curriculum or restructuring of the training provided. METHODS: A review of the first 2 years of ACS case log entry (July 2011 to June 2013) was performed. Individual trainee logs were evaluated to determine how often they performed each case on the E/D list. Trainees described cases using current procedural terminology codes, which had been previously mapped to the E/D list. RESULTS: There were 29 trainees from 15 programs (Year 1)

Career choices for emergency medicine: national surveys of graduates of 1993-2009 from all UK medical schools.

BACKGROUND: In the UK, recruitment of adequate numbers of doctors to emergency medicine (EM) has been problematic. With this as background, we analysed data about career choice for, and progression in, EM in a large multi-purpose study of doctors' careers. METHODS: Questionnaire surveys of medical graduates of 1993, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2009 from all UK medical schools. RESULTS: EM was specified as a first choice of career by 4.2% of graduates in postgraduate year 1, 4.8% in year 3, and 3.8% in year 5. Graduates who chose EM were much less likely to be certain about their c

Emergency ultrasound of the gall bladder: comparison of a concentrated elective experience vs. longitudinal exposure during residency.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown how an intensive emergency ultrasound (EUS) experience compares with comparable exposure done over the course of residency training. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to compare the accuracy of EUS of the gall bladder done by physicians after a 2-week EUS elective with similarly numbered examinations done by physicians longitudinally over several years of residency training. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a previously reported prospective study of EUS for biliary disease. The 21(st)-40(th) examinations were compared between those who participated in an EUS ele

Perinatal outcomes in a school-based program for pregnant teen-agers.

Teen-age pregnancy constitutes a high-risk factor for prematurity, low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation, infant mortality, and later health, behavioral, developmental, and educational disadvantages. A case-controlled study was performed to evaluate the influence of the Teen-age Parent Center on pregnancy outcomes. Improved outcomes were identified for low-birth-weight rate, high school graduation rate, smoking during pregnancy, and prenatal care. These results indicate that a comprehensive, school-based program can enhance perinatal outcomes.

Development of a Basic Robotic Training Course for Residents in General Surgery in the Netherlands.

INTRODUCTION: The continued adoption of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) in digestive surgery has created an increasing demand for structured training of surgical residents. However, standardized basic RAS training programs specifically designed for residents remain limited, resulting in variable exposure and skill acquisition. This study describes the development and evaluation of a structured basic RAS training course, to standardize education and improve residents' robotic surgery skills. METHODS: A 2-day, on-site basic RAS training course was developed by the Dutch Robotic Surgery Working G

Making the most of the surgical internship: Optimizing preliminary year for future vascular and interventional radiologists.

The surgical internship represents a unique opportunity over that of transitional years or internal medicine preliminary years because it allows trainees to develop procedural confidence, clinical judgment, and patient-care habits that directly translate to vascular and interventional radiology (VIR) practice. Although the internship year is often viewed as a prerequisite before radiology residency, available evidence suggests that surgical preliminary training may offer advantages in procedural exposure and perceived preparedness for trainees pursuing VIR. As VIR continues to evolve into a cl

Evaluating clinical psychology doctoral students' competence in delivering CBT for chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain affects approximately 20% of adults in the United States and is associated with significant psychological and functional impairment. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based intervention for chronic pain, but there is a shortage of trained providers. The Chronic Pain Management Program (CPMP) was developed to train clinical psychology doctoral students in delivering CBT for chronic pain. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the CPMP in improving trainees' knowledge, clinical experience, and perceptions of their competency in providing CBT-based inte
