A novel procedure has been developed to address severe fractures of the lateral trochlea and capitellum when open reduction and internal fixation is not practical and patient factors preclude the use of total elbow arthroplasty. We present 3 patients in whom an ipsilateral radial head autograft was used to reconstruct the lateral trochlea, restoring both function and stability of the elbow.

A prospective study of closed intramedullary fixation of fractures of the shaft of the humerus, using Ender nails, was performed over a six-year period. Eighty-nine fractures in eighty-eight patients were treated with no immobilization postoperatively. Three patients were lost to follow-up. Eighty-five of the remaining eighty-six fractures healed, the average time to clinical union being 7.2 weeks. Non-union of one fracture occurred and there were no infections or malunions. Six of the nine preoperative and two postoperative radial-nerve palsies were lesions in continuity and healed spontaneou

SUMMARY: Medial epicondyle fractures of the distal humerus account for 12% of pediatric elbow fractures and are frequently associated with intra-articular incarceration of the fracture fragment, elbow dislocation, ulnar nerve injury, and other upper extremity fractures. Recent literature calls into question the accuracy of measuring fracture displacem …

PURPOSE: Lateral humeral condyle fracture (HLCF) is a common pediatric elbow injury. For minimally displaced fractures (≤ 2 mm), the optimal management strategy remains controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of conservative treatment for this specific subtype. METHODS: A systematic search of multiple databases was conducted to compare conservative and surgical management of minimally displaced (≤ 2 mm) pediatric HLCF. The primary outcome was fracture healing, defined by the absence of secondary displacement during follow-up. Seconda

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain in children has always been inadequately evaluated. This study aims to evaluate the postoperative pain response using an additional dose of brachial plexus block (BPB) for younger children receiving elbow surgeries under general anesthesia (GA).
METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included pediatric patients (3-10 years) who underwent surgeries for elbow injuries between January 2015 and January 2019. Patients with previous history of surgeries around the elbow, neurological impairment of injured limb, polytrauma, undergoing pain management for differ

BACKGROUND: Satisfactory internal fixation of comminuted radial head fractures is often difficult to achieve, and radial head resection has been the accepted treatment. In this study, we compared the results of radial head resection with those of open reduction and internal fixation in patients with a comminuted radial head fracture.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with a Mason type-III radial head fracture (some with associated injuries) were enrolled in the study. Fifteen patients underwent radial head resection as the initial treatment (Group I), and thirteen patients underwent open reducti

The posterior approach for open reduction of supracondylar fractures of the humerus has been condemned for causing decreased elbow movement. This study investigates this by comparing the range of movement in children treated by posterior open reduction and Kirschner wiring with those treated by closed reduction and immobilization. A total of 65 children with severely displaced supracondylar humeral fractures have been reviewed. There was some loss of movement in 66 per cent of the open reduction group and 42 per cent of the closed reduction group. The proportion losing more than 10 degrees of

Distal humeral metaphyseal-diaphyseal fractures are rare and inherently unstable injuries. Non-operative treatments can make it hard to maintain reduction. Open or closed reduction with percutaneous K-wire fixation may be the preferred treatment option for these fracture types. This case report describes successfully managing a rare distal humerus metaphyseal-diaphyseal junctional (MDJ) fracture in a four-year-old child using intramedullary Steinmann wire fixation. A four-year-old male child applied to the emergency service with a swollen elbow. He had a history of trauma 10 days ago. There wa

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Supracondylar humerus fractures are common in children but open type is very rare (almost %1 of all supracondylar humerus fractures) and the treatment strategy for these fractures is yet to be standardized.
CASE PRESENTATION: 11-year-old boy was brought to our hospital with pain in his left arm with high energy trauma history of motor accident. On the first examination the elbow was found swollen and 3 cm wide wound observed on the flexor aspect of the elbow and the median nerve was seen stretched on the distal humerus. We shared the 6-month results of our patient

Neer type II distal clavicle fractures are inherently unstable. The purpose of this study was to review the outcome of Neer type II distal clavicle fractures arthroscopically treated using a suspensory cortical button technique. Between 2008 and 2012, a total of 17 Neer type IIB fractures were managed operatively at the authors' institution. Functional outcomes were assessed using the pain score, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score, the Penn Shoulder Score, and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score. Radiographic union was also assessed. At a mean of 1 year, the mean p

BACKGROUND: Elbow flexion at late portions of the pitch has been associated with increased elbow varus torque, a kinetic surrogate associated with injury risk. Direct examinations of injury incidence with elbow flexion angles have not been conducted in professional pitchers.
PURPOSE: To compare elbow and shoulder injury incidence among professional baseball players stratified by degree of elbow flexion at ball release (BR).
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.
METHODS: Professional pitchers (N = 314) were instructed to pitch between 8 and 12 fastballs while being evaluated using moti

BACKGROUND: Medial epicondyle fractures of the distal humerus are common pediatric fractures, which are increasing in frequency among pediatric and adolescent athletes. Residual elbow stiffness is a feared complication of both surgical and nonoperative treatment. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association of the relevant variables with the ability of patients to regain full elbow range of motion (ROM).
METHODS: Patients 8-18 years old enrolled in the Medial Epicondyle Multicenter Outcomes prospective cohort with ≥3 mm of displacement, and >1 year of follow-up data were includ

BACKGROUND: Elbow dislocations can be classified as simple or complex. Simple dislocations are characterized by the absence of fractures, while complex dislocations are associated with fractures. After reduction of a simple dislocation, treatment options include immobilization in a static plaster for different periods of time or so-called functional treatment. Functional treatment is characterized by early active motion within the limits of pain with or without the use of a sling or hinged brace. Theoretically, functional treatment should prevent stiffness without introducing increased joint i

Radial head arthroplasty is indicated for displaced comminuted radial head fractures that cannot be managed reliably with open reduction and internal fixation and that have an associated elbow dislocation. Replacement also is indicated in patients with comminuted radial head fractures that have or are likely to have a disruption of the medial col-lateral, lateral collateral, or interosseous ligaments. Biomechanical studies have demonstrated that metallic implants restore elbow stability similar to the native radial head. The early and midterm clinical experience with metallic radial head arthr

A left elbow fracture-dislocation in a 51-year-old female patient following a backward fall at home presented with a comminuted radial head fracture, coronoid fracture, and ruptured collateral ligaments. The patient underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with a long-arm splint. Post surgery, aggressive rehabilitation was initiated to restore the range of motion (ROM). Compared to previous reports, this case demonstrates successful management of a severe elbow injury with excellent short-term outcomes. This case highlights the occurrence of the terrible triad in a patient without

Dislocation of the radial head is often encountered as a result of a pediatric Monteggia fracture. We report two rare cases of tardy ulnar nerve palsy associated with anterior radial head dislocation combined with anterior bowing of the ulna. They had cubitus valgus deformity, valgus instability, and osteoarthritis of the elbow, and had elbow injury more than 40 years back. They were diagnosed with chronic radial head dislocation long after a Bado type 1 Monteggia fracture. Anterior subcutaneous ulnar nerve transposition yielded favorable results. It is important to recognize the possibility o
