BACKGROUND: Temporary elbow stiffness is often seen after a lateral condylar fracture of the distal end of the humerus in children. There are scant scientific data available to assess the expected time frame for return of elbow motion after these injuries. The purpose of this study is to provide a prospective, longitudinal evaluation of elbow motion in a large group of pediatric patients undergoing treatment for a lateral condylar fracture of the distal end of the humerus.
METHODS: We prospectively evaluated 141 patients with lateral humeral condylar fractures at a mean age of 5.2 years and w

Lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow is a common condition that presents with pain and tenderness around the common extensor origin of the elbow. Tennis elbow is estimated to affect 1-3% of the adult population each year and is more common in the dominant arm. It is generally regarded as an overuse injury involving repeated wrist extension against resistance, although it can occur as an acute injury (trauma to the lateral elbow). Up to 50% of all tennis players develop symptoms due to various factors including poor swing technique the use of heavy racquet. It's also seen in labourers who uti

BACKGROUND: Elbow ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries have become increasingly common in throwing athletes. The forearm flexors (FF) have been studied as biomechanical stabilizers for the medial elbow. However, there are no studies investigating the association of concomitant UCL injuries and FF injuries in throwing athletes.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if throwing athletes with a complete UCL injury had a greater likelihood of concomitant FF injury than those with a partial UCL injury.
DESIGN: Descriptive retrospective epidemiological study.
SETTING: Academic, tertiary care medical center

BACKGROUND: Disc golf is a sport played much like traditional golf, but rather than using a ball and club, players throw flying discs with various throwing motions. It has been played by an estimated 8 to 12 million people in the United States. Like all sports, injuries sustained while playing disc golf are not uncommon. Although formalized in the 1970s, it has grown at a rapid pace; however, disc golf-related injuries have yet to be described in the medical literature.
PURPOSE: To describe the most common injuries incurred by disc golf players while comparing the different types of throwing

Post-traumatic joint stiffness (PTJS) of the elbow is a debilitating condition that poses unique treatment challenges. While previous research has implicated capsular tissue in PTJS, much regarding the development and progression of this condition remains unknown. The objective of this study was to develop an animal model of post-traumatic elbow contracture and evaluate its potential for studying the etiology of PTJS. The Long-Evans rat was identified as the most appropriate species/breed for development due to anatomical and functional similarities to the human elbow joint. Two surgical proto

Fractures and dislocations of the elbow can result in adverse outcomes. The elbow is a unique joint that allows for great mobility but is predisposed to instability, either simple or complex, in traumatic settings. Even simple elbow instability, in which no fracture is present, may be associated with tremendous soft-tissue injury. Surgical treatment is often required for complex instability in which various fractures are present. The treatment goals for fixation of elbow fractures and dislocations include stable fracture fixation, a stable concentrically reduced joint, and early range of motio

BACKGROUND: Conservative treatment such as physiotherapy is a treatment option for ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries in baseball pitchers, with 46%-66% of patients returning to their previous performance levels. However, a standardized conservative treatment algorithm for UCL injuries has yet to be established. While extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is widely used for sports-related musculoskeletal disorders, there have been limited data on its effectiveness for suspected UCL-related symptoms in baseball pitchers specifically. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively eva

BACKGROUND: Elbow injuries are becoming increasingly prevalent in throwing athletes. Early diagnosis, especially in athletes, can allow for earlier intervention and return to play. It is important for clinicians to have a framework to systemically examine the elbow to accurately diagnose a variety of elbow pathologies in this unique patient population.
INDICATIONS: The purpose of this video is to educate clinicians on how to diagnose a variety of elbow pathologies in the throwing athlete. Currently, there is no published video describing the evaluation of the elbow in throwing athletes with a…

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) of the elbow resulting in limited motion is a relatively uncommon condition often caused by burns, trauma, and central nervous system injuries. This retrospective study presents the long-term outcomes of 51 cases of elbow HO treated with surgical excision and regimented postoperative rehabilitation protocol.
METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted on 48 patients (51 elbows) who underwent surgical excision of elbow HO. All procedures were performed in the inpatient setting at an Academic Level I Trauma Center between September 1999 and Augus

According to the literature approximately 5% of all elbow injuries result in elbow stiffness. Following pathomorphological aspects elbow stiffness can be classified into intrinsic (intra-articular) and extrinsic (extra-articular) types. Mixed forms are common. Patient evaluation should include age, degree of stiffness, predisposition and anamnesis of professional and leisure time. Basic diagnostics for planning surgical treatment routinely include clinical evaluation, x-rays and computed tomography. Before indications for open arthrolysis of the elbow are given conservative treatment of more t…

A case of a young man who developed heterotopic ossification (HO) in his elbows following an accident where he sustained petrol burns to over 60% of his body. His injuries necessitated intubation, escharotomies and a protracted intensive care unit stay that was complicated by septicaemia. Several weeks after the injury, he was diagnosed with HO in his right elbow, followed by the left elbow a week later. He was commenced on an non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, a long-term course of a bisphosphonate and regular physiotherapy. He is now waiting for the HO bone to mature before having definit

We describe a patient who developed right arm dystonia following an electrical injury. The patient's arm remained adducted, and flexed at the elbow and wrist, with all movement resulting in pain and tremor. Surface electromyographic evaluation revealed constant tonic activity of multiple upper and lower arm muscles at rest, that was not distractible. Voluntary and passive movement of the elbow or wrist resulted in high amplitude EMG activity, with motor grouping at 11 Hz at the elbow and 8 Hz at the wrist. Although a diagnosis of psychogenic dystonia was entertained, the stereotyped nature of

The sport of arm wrestling requires very little equipment, and can take place anywhere a flat surface is available. As such, undertrained participants often compete, with inevitable injury. Humeral fractures, and elbow injuries are well described, but scapular fractures have not previously been reported in the literature.

BACKGROUND: Elbow injuries disrupt the surrounding periarticular soft tissues, which include the muscles, tendons, capsule, ligaments, and cartilage. Damage to these tissues as a result of elbow trauma causes clinically significant contracture in 50% of patients. However, it is unclear which of these tissues is primarily responsible for the decreased range of motion. We hypothesized that all tissues would substantially contribute to elbow contracture after immobilization, but only the capsule, ligaments, and cartilage would contribute after free mobilization, with the capsule as the primary co…

Radial head fractures are common elbow injuries. Radial head replacement (RHR) is a well-established surgical option for non-reconstructible fractures, either in isolation or alongside associated elbow trauma, such as a terrible triad injury, which is a complex injury characterized by elbow dislocation and coronoid and radial head fractures. The procedure aims to restore the stabilizing function of the radial head, which plays a key role in maintaining longitudinal and valgus stability and an auxiliary role in the varus stability of the elbow. Radial head arthroplasty has gained popularity in …

INTRODUCTION: T-condylar (T-Y) distal humerus fractures are rare intra-articular injuries in adolescents (<2% of pediatric elbow fractures). The coexistence of a capitellar coronal shear fragment is exceptionally uncommon and can be easily missed on radiographs. We report successful management of this rare injury using computed tomography (CT)-guided planning and stable screw fixation.
CASE REPORT: A 12-year-old boy presented after a fall with a displaced T-condylar distal humerus fracture. CT demonstrated an associated capitellar coronal shear fragment. Open reduction through a posterior par
