Development of network-based multichannel neuromuscular electrical stimulation system for stroke rehabilitation.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a promising assistive technology for stroke rehabilitation. Here we present the design and development of a multimuscle stimulation system as an emerging therapy for people with paretic stroke. A network-based multichannel NMES system was integrated based on dual bus architecture of communication and an H-bridge current regulator with a power booster. The structure of the system was a body area network embedded with multiple stimulators and a communication protocol of controlled area network to transmit muscle stimulation parameter information to

Differential modulation of electrical stimulation of periaqueductal gray and thalamus on nociceptive behaviors of rats.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical treatment which has shown remarkable therapeutic benefits for patients with a variety of neurologic conditions. As an important application, DBS has been used to treat intractable pain for over 60 years. Clinical studies have revealed that the selection of the stimulation sites depended on the types of pain. In this study, we selected ventrolateral periaqueductal gray (vlPAG) and ventral posterior lateral nucleus (VPL) as the target brain areas, which were widely used in clinical treatment of refractory pain, to clarify and compare the effects of vlPA

Effect of submental sensitive transcutaneous electrical stimulation on virtual lesions of the oropharyngeal cortex.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of submental sensitive transcutaneous electrical stimulation (SSTES) on pharyngeal cortical representation after the creation of an oropharyngeal cortical virtual lesion in healthy subjects. METHODS: Motor-evoked potential amplitude of the mylohyoid muscles was measured with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), the oropharyngeal cortex was mapped by cartography, and videofluoroscopic parameters of swallowing function were measured before and after SSTES (at the end of SSTES [0 min] and at 30 and 60 min), after the creation of a cor

Characterization of evoked tactile sensation in forearm amputees with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to characterize the phenomenon of evoked tactile sensation (ETS) on the stump skin of forearm amputees using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). APPROACH: We identified the projected finger map (PFM) of ETS on the stump skin in 11 forearm amputees, and compared perceptual attributes of the ETS in nine forearm amputees and eight able-bodied subjects using TENS. The profile of perceptual thresholds at the most sensitive points (MSPs) in each finger-projected area was obtained by modulating current amplitude, pulse width, and frequency of the

Effects of electrical stimulation on rat limb regeneration, a new look at an old model.

Limb loss is a devastating disability and while current treatments provide aesthetic and functional restoration, they are associated with complications and risks. The optimal solution would be to harness the body's regenerative capabilities to regrow new limbs. Several methods have been tried to regrow limbs in mammals, but none have succeeded. One such attempt, in the early 1970s, used electrical stimulation and demonstrated partial limb regeneration. Several researchers reproduced these findings, applying low voltage DC electrical stimulation to the stumps of amputated rat forelimbs reportin

Switched Control of Cadence During Stationary Cycling Induced by Functional Electrical Stimulation.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) can be used to activate the dysfunctional lower limb muscles of individuals with neurological disorders to produce cycling as a means of rehabilitation. However, previous literature suggests that poor muscle control and nonphysiological muscle fiber recruitment during FES-cycling causes lower efficiency and power output at the cycle crank than able-bodied cycling, thus motivating the investigation of improved control methods for FES-cycling. In this paper, a stimulation pattern is designed based on the kinematic effectiveness of the rider's hip and knee

The effect of subthreshold continuous electrical stimulation on the facial function of patients with Bell's palsy.

CONCLUSION: The drug regimen plus electrical stimulation was more effective in treating Bell's palsy than the conventional drug treatment alone. The effectiveness of such a sub-threshold, continuous, low frequency electrical stimulation suggests a new therapeutic approach to accelerate nerve regeneration and improve functional recovery after injury. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether sub-threshold, continuous electrical stimulation at 20 Hz facilitates functional recovery of patients with Bell's palsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors performed a prospective ran

Vestibular implantation and longitudinal electrical stimulation of the semicircular canal afferents in human subjects.

Animal experiments and limited data in humans suggest that electrical stimulation of the vestibular end organs could be used to treat loss of vestibular function. In this paper we demonstrate that canal-specific two-dimensionally (2D) measured eye velocities are elicited from intermittent brief 2 s biphasic pulse electrical stimulation in four human subjects implanted with a vestibular prosthesis. The 2D measured direction of the slow phase eye movements changed with the canal stimulated. Increasing pulse current over a 0-400 μA range typically produced a monotonic increase in slow phase eye v

Electrical stimulation threshold in chronically compressed lumbar nerve roots: Observational study.

OBJECTIVES: Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is a common practice in spinal surgery, mostly during pedicle screw placement. However, there is not enough information about the factors that can interfere with IONM data. One of these factors may be existing damage of the nerve root whose function must be preserved. The main purpose of the present study is to evaluate the effect of chronic compression in lumbar nerve roots in terms of stimulation thresholds during direct nerve stimulation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Direct electrical stimulation was performed in 201 lumbar nerve roots during lumb

Multimodal cortical sensory pathways revealed by sequential transcranial electrical stimulation in mice.

We investigated polysynaptic cortical pathways linking primary to multimodal sensory association areas in mice using transcranial flavoprotein imaging combined with sequential application of transcranial electrical stimulation (TES). Stimulation of primary visual cortex (V1) elicited activity in lateral and medial areas of secondary visual cortices (V2), which were reciprocally connected. Stimulation of V2 areas elicited activity in area 2. Similarly, corticocortical pathways from primary somatosensory cortex (S1) through the corresponding secondary somatosensory areas (S2) to area 2 were obse

Sympathetic skin responses from the scalp evoked by electrical stimulation in seborrheic dermatitis.

Although the role of autonomic nervous system in seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is still unclear, seborrhea is sometimes accepted as a sign of autonomic dysfunction in several nervous system diseases. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity in SD by recording sympathetic skin responses (SSR) from the scalp (S-SSR). Thirty-one control subjects and 22 SD patients were studied by evoking right and left S-SSR with electrical stimulation of the right median nerve at the wrist. Mean latencies and maximum amplitudes were calculated for both sides in each group. In

Wireless electrical stimulation: an innovative powerful tool for the treatment of a complicated chronic ulcer.

High-voltage electrical stimulation has been long proposed as a method of accelerating the wound healing process. Its beneficial effect has been successfully evaluated in the treatment of a number of chronic ulcers and burns. We present here the implementation of a new wireless electrical stimulation technique for the treatment of a complicated chronic ulcer of the lower limb. The device is transferring charges to the wound, without any contact with it, creating a microcurrent that is able to generate the current of injury. The results suggest that this easy-to-use method is an effective thera

Focal electrical intracerebral stimulation of a face-sensitive area causes transient prosopagnosia.

Face perception is subtended by a large set of areas in the human ventral occipito-temporal cortex. However, the role of these areas and their importance for face recognition remain largely unclear. Here we report a case of transient selective impairment in face recognition (prosopagnosia) induced by focal electrical intracerebral stimulation of the right inferior occipital gyrus. This area presents with typical face-sensitivity as evidenced by functional neuroimaging right occipital face area (OFA). A face-sensitive intracerebral N170 was also recorded in this area, supporting its contributio
