Thermal stress responses on developmental time, survival, and wing morphometrics in desert and coastal strains of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) from India.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is a primary vector of dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever diseases. Despite its global invasion, little is known about how populations from climatically contrasting regions adapt to varied thermal environments. Understanding survival strategies is critical for predicting population dynamics and disease transmission under climate change. To address this gap, we assessed ecological adaptations in terms of development, survival, and wing length, along with molecular variations, in the Thar Desert (Jodhpur) and the east coastal (Kolkata) strains of Ae. aegypti.

Morphology and molecular characterization of a new species of Tereancistrum parasite from the gills of Brycon nattereri.

A new species of Tereancistrum Kritsky, Thatcher & Kayton, 1980, collected from the gills of Brycon nattereri (Bryconidae) in the Cerrado, in the state of Goiás, Brazil, is described based on morphological and molecular data, based on the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene region. Tereancistrum campanum n. sp. is distinguished from all its congeners by the unique 'bell-shaped' accessory piece in the male copulatory complex. Molecular analysis revealed that the specimens analyzed formed a distinct group from other Tereancistrum sequences and that the sequences of Tereancist

Development of a multiplex PCR assay targeting mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit III (cox3) gene for simultaneous specific and sensitive detection of Babesia gibsoni and Babesia vogeli in dogs.

Canine babesiosis is a potential threat for the dog population worldwide. Rapid, sensitive, and specific identification of the etiological agent to the species is pivotal for initiating effective therapeutic and control measures. Co-infection with multiple species pathogens due to multiple vectors infesting dogs is not uncommon. A multiplex PCR (Bg-Bv mPCR) for simultaneous detection and differentiation of the two common Babesia species, B. gibsoni and B. vogeli has been developed targeting the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit III (cox3) gene. These two species are the species responsi

Morphological and molecular identification of cardiopulmonary nematodes in the European wildcat (Felis silvestris) and nine other carnivores in Spain.

Cardiopulmonary nematodes (CPN) are among the most pathogenic helminths, with wild carnivores serving as hosts for a variety of species. Knowledge of their presence in the Iberian Peninsula is limited, and for certain hosts, such as the European wildcat (Felis silvestris), no data are currently available. Lung and heart samples from 112 road-killed individuals belonging to 10 different species, primarily wildcats (n = 33), collected in Navarra (northern Spain) were collected. Morphological identification of nematodes was done and confirmed, when possible, by sequencing fragments of the cytochr

Pathogenic PDE12 variants impair mitochondrial RNA processing causing neonatal mitochondrial disease.

Pathogenic variants in either the mitochondrial or nuclear genomes are associated with a diverse group of human disorders characterized by impaired mitochondrial function. Within this group, an increasing number of families have been identified, where Mendelian genetic disorders implicate defective mitochondrial RNA biology. The PDE12 gene encodes the poly(A)-specific exoribonuclease, involved in the quality control of mitochondrial non-coding RNAs. Here, we report that disease-causing PDE12 variants in three unrelated families are associated with mitochondrial respiratory chain deficiencies a

PHYLOGENY AND SYSTEMATICS OF CYATHOCOTYLID DIGENEANS (DIGENEA: DIPLOSTOMOIDEA) PARASITIZING SNAKES WITH DESCRIPTION OF THREE NEW SPECIES OF GOGATEA FROM AUSTRALIA AND VIETNAM.

The Cyathocotylidae Mühling, 1896 is a small but broadly distributed family of digeneans parasitic in a wide range of vertebrate definitive hosts, from fish to mammals. Despite existing taxonomic questions, only a few studies have generated DNA sequence data from cyathocotylids, and only a single publication included sequence data from a cyathocotylid parasitic in snakes. Four genera are known to infect snakes: GogateaLutz, 1935, Szidatia Dubois, 1938, MesostephanoidesDubois, 1951, and SerpentostephanusSudarikov, 1961. Members of these genera were known from only Asia and Africa. In the presen

Crossroad between the sylvatic and domestic cycles of Mesocestoides litteratus: mesocestodiasis in dogs adopted from shelters in Türkiye.

This study aimed to report the presence of Mesocestoides litteratus in dogs adopted from shelters in Türkiye. Gravid segments were examined microscopically in the faeces of dogs from different shelters located in Ankara and Kirikkale provinces in the central region of Türkiye. Then, genomic DNA obtained from these segments, a 446-bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit 1 gene, and a 350-bp fragment of mitochondrial 12S rRNA were amplified and sequenced. BLASTn search was performed. During light microscopic examination, an egg-filled paruterine organ was observed in the mi

Comparative Assessment of Diagnostic Performance of Cytochrome Oxidase Multiplex PCR and 18S rRNA Nested PCR.

Malaria elimination and control require prompt and accurate diagnosis for treatment plan. Since microscopy and rapid diagnostic test (RDT) are not sensitive particularly for diagnosing low parasitemia, highly sensitive diagnostic tools are required for accurate treatment. Molecular diagnosis of malaria is commonly carried out by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting 18S rRNA gene, while this technique involves long turnaround time and multiple steps leading to false positive results. To overcome these drawbacks, we compared highly sensitive cytochrome oxidase gene-based single-step

Rabbit Bot Fly Furuncular, Tracheopulmonary, and Human Bot Fly Infestations in Connecticut (Oestridae: Cuterebrinae).

Endemic and tropical human bot infestations are relatively uncommon or unreported in the United States. We report two cases in Connecticut: an unusual furuncular and respiratory myiasis by the rabbit bot Cuterebra buccata (Fab.) (Diptera: Oestridae) in a 74-yr-old male and a case of human bot fly, Dermatobia hominis (L.) (Diptera: Oestridae), myiasis in a 4-yr-old female with a tropical travel history with her family. Identification of C. buccata was based morphologically, in part, on spinal armature and further corroborated by DNA sequencing of the mitochondrial COI gene and comparison to the

MORPHOLOGICAL AND MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF THE PLAGUE VECTOR XENOPSYLLA BRASILIENSIS.

Members of the flea family Pulicidae have been the focus of many studies due to their significance as diseases vectors of medical and veterinary importance and their cosmopolitan distribution. They often exhibit variation in morphological features that can make correct species identification and management challenging. This may also apply to Xenopsylla brasiliensis (Baker, 1904), an important plague vector. In the current study, we aimed to provide genetic tools for reliable species identification using a DNA barcoding approach. A total of 73 flea specimens was collected from a native host (Na

Molecular analysis of polymorphic species of the genus Marshallagia (Nematoda: Ostertagiinae).

BACKGROUND: The genus Marshallagia (Family Haemonchidae, subfamily Ostertagiinae) contains multiple species of nematodes parasitising the abomasum (or duodenum) of ruminants, in particular of Caprinae. Male specimens have been described to be polymorphic with the frequent/major morphotype initially described in the genus Marshallagia while the minor/rare morphotype was initially often placed in the genus Grossospicularia. Due to common morphological features, certain pairs of morphotypes were suggested to belong to the same species such as Marshallagia marshalli/M. occidentalis. However, molec

Retrieval of allocentric spatial memories is preserved up to thirty days and does not require higher brain metabolic demands.

Spatial orientation is a cognitive ability that is indispensable for survival. Several visual distal cues present in the context can be integrated, establishing a cognitive map. Although there is cumulative evidence about the neural substrate involved in spatial memory acquisition, the brain networks mediating the processes involved in the retrieval of allocentric spatial memories have been studied less. Here, we aimed to explore the role of neuronal oxidative metabolism in the retrieval of allocentric spatial memories through cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) histochemistry seven, 15, 30, 45, and 60

Morphological and molecular data for highly pathogenic avian parasite Erschoviorchis anuiensis sp. n. and phylogenetic relationships within the Opisthorchiidae (Trematoda).

Adult worms of Erschoviorchis anuiensis sp. n., parasites of the pancreas and liver of birds, were found by feeding the Muscovy ducks Cairina moschata dom. with freshwater fish (Phoxinus percnurus) from the Amur River basin (Russia). The trematodes obtained differ from the only previously known representative of the genus, E. lintoni by the large size of the ventral sucker, testes and ovary, the shape of the ovary (three-lobed vs irregular oval for E. lintoni), and the degree of vitellarium development (well-developed vitellarium with numerous follicles vs weakly developed vitelline fields for

Comprehensive mapping of cytochrome c oxidase activity in the rat brain after sub-chronic ketamine administration.

Ketamine is a noncompetitive antagonist of glutamatergic N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors. Its acute effects on healthy volunteers and schizophrenia patients mimic some acute psychotic, but also cognitive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia, and subchronic treatment with ketamine has been used as an animal model of psychotic disorders. Glutamatergic neurotransmission is tightly coupled to oxidative metabolism in the brain. Quantitative histochemical mapping of cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity, which reflect long-term energy metabolism, was carried out in rats that received a daily subanaes

Effects of environmental cocaine concentrations on COX and caspase-3 activity, GRP-78, ALT, CRP and blood glucose levels in the liver and kidney of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla).

Cocaine is one of the most widely used illicit drugs in the world, and as a result of incomplete removal by sewage treatment plants it is found in surface waters, where it represents a new potential risk for aquatic organisms. In this study we evaluated the influence of environmental concentrations of cocaine on the liver and the kidney of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). The eels were exposed to 20 ng L-1 of cocaine for fifty days, after which, three and ten days after the interruption of cocaine exposure their livers and kidneys were compared to controls. The general morphology of the t

First molecular description, phylogeny and genetic variation of Taenia hydatigena from Nigerian sheep and goats based on three mitochondrial genes.

BACKGROUND: Cysticercosis caused by the metacestode larval stage of Taenia hydatigena is a disease of veterinary and economic importance. A considerable level of genetic variation among isolates of different intermediate hosts and locations has been documented. Generally, data on the genetic population structure of T. hydatigena is scanty and lacking in Nigeria. Meanwhile, similar findings in other cestodes like Echinococcus spp. have been found to be of epidemiological importance. Our aim, therefore, was to characterize and compare the genetic diversity of T. hydatigena population in Nigeria

Myocardial insufficiency is related to reduced subunit 4 content of cytochrome c oxidase.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of heart failure remains one of the most challenging task for intensive care medicine, cardiology and cardiac surgery. New options and better indicators are always required. Understanding the basic mechanisms underlying heart failure promote the development of adjusted therapy e.g. assist devices and monitoring of recovery. If cardiac failure is related to compromised cellular respiration of the heart, remains unclear. Myocardial respiration depends on Cytochrome c- Oxidase (CytOx) activity representing the rate limiting step for the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The e

Rodents of Senegal and their role as intermediate hosts of Hydatigera spp. (Cestoda: Taeniidae).

Hydatigera (Cestoda: Taeniidae) is a recently resurrected genus including species seldom investigated in sub-Saharan Africa. We surveyed wild small mammal populations in the areas of Richard Toll and Lake Guiers, Senegal, with the objective to evaluate their potential role as intermediate hosts of larval taeniid stages (i.e. metacestodes). Based on genetic sequences of a segment of the mitochondrial DNA gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI), we identified Hydatigera parva metacestodes in 19 out of 172 (11.0%) Hubert's multimammate mice (Mastomys huberti) and one out of six (16.7%) gerbils
