Experimental embryology performed on avian embryos combines tissue manipulations and cell-labeling methods with increasing opportunities and demands for critical assays of the results. These approaches continue to reveal unexpected complexities in the normal patterns of cell movement and tissue origins, documentation of which is critical to unraveling the intricacies of cell and tissue interactions during embryogenesis. Viktor Hamburger's many pioneering contributions helped launch and promote the philosophical as well as technical elements of avian experimental embryology. Furthermore, his sc…

After injuries innervationanomalies are observest. Are these anomalies mechanismen of adaption or an embryological malformation, is a still mansverst question. This paper tries some contributions to the answer. The use of modern muscleenzymhistochemistry in connection of histological findings of nerves in certain levels gives assertions on anomalies of innervation and mechanisms of reinnervation. After 14, 28, 56 and 112 days tissues of nerves and muscle from 66 female WISTAR-rats were investigated after various lesions. We have found in 15 not operated rats that the so called typegrouping can

Development of the craniofacies occurs in embryological intimacy with development of the brain and both show normal left-right asymmetries. While facial dysmorphology occurs to excess in psychotic illness, facial asymmetry has yet to be investigated as a putative index of brain asymmetry. Ninety-three subjects (49 controls, 22 schizophrenia, 22 bipolar disorder) received 3D laser surface imaging of the face. On geometric morphometric analysis with (x, y, z) visualisations of statistical models for facial asymmetries, in controls the upper face and periorbital region, which share embryological

The authors report a rare case of lingual thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) which is being treated by non-conventional technique of intraoral marsupialisation and the authors also review the embryology of TGDC and its diagnosis. The patient was operated upon by intraoral route and the cyst was marsupialised. There is no recurrence in the past 2-year follow-up. This approach avoids unnecessary scar and postoperative morbidity associated with opening neck planes and removing the central hyoid as indicated in conventional technique.

Congenital nasal obstruction can result in neonatal respiratory distress because neonates are obligate nasal breathers. Therefore, all physicians who deal with infants should be familiar with the structural abnormalities, masses, and syndromes that cause nasal obstruction, so that appropriate work-up and treatment can be promptly initiated. This paper reviews the embryology of the nasal passage and then continues with the different causes of nasal obstruction. Special attention is paid to the presentation, physical exam findings, and imaging modality of choice.

Until recently, sperm donors have remained anonymous under the 1990 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act. There has been a distinct international trend towards allowing children access to identifying information about their donor. The UK has followed and, subject to parliamentary approval, children born by donations made after 1 April 2005 will be legally entitled to information revealing the identity of their donor. The lifelong well-being of the child created must be the prime consideration in any reform of the law.

Airway malformations such as laryngeal atresia, tracheal agenesis and subglottic stenosis are rare and present at birth with significant respiratory distress with or without stridor. There may be an initial improvement on bag and mask ventilation. Repeated attempts at intubation are met with failure. The related embryology and clinical aspect of airway malformations have been discussed. The prognosis in tracheal agenesis is universally fatal but cases with laryngeal atresia and subglottic stenosis may be saved with prompt tracheostomy and later surgical reconstruction.

Congenital malformations of the uterus (also known as müllerian duct anomalies) exist as a spectrum of disorders; each of these, to some extent, is associated with reproductive dysfunction. Significant improvements in imaging methods such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance have the potential to eliminate the need for invasive evaluation of patients with suspected uterine anomalies. This article reviews the relevant embryology and classification of müllerian duct anomalies as well as the relationship between the imaging features and general therapeutic options.

Proboscis lateralis is a rare craniofacial malformation. We present a case in a 1-week-old male infant, describe the clinical and imaging findings, and discuss the pertinent embryology. MR and CT proved to be complementary: CT provided anatomic detail in bone, defined the nasal cavity, and aided in determining the relationship of the proboscis and orbit; MR clarified the relationship of the proboscis to the orbit and skull base, and the relationships of normal brain to the dysplastic ethmoid centers.

The goal of the surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism is ablation of the proper amount of hyperfunctioning tissue. This paper presents our operative technique based on an experience in the treatment of 190 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. The technique is based on a complete knowledge of the anatomy of the normal parathyroid gland as well as the pathology in primary hyperparthyroidism. We also propose a systematic and methodical search for possible abnormal locations incorporating a thorough knowledge of the specific embryology.

This brief review focuses on the imaging of the craniocervical junction with particular attention to linear and angular craniometry. It attempts to answer the question of why there are so many measurements and how they are clinically useful. Congenital anomalies of the craniocervical junction will be discussed with an overview of craniocervical junction embryology and development. Entities affecting the craniocervical junction which will be discussed include platybasia, basilar invagination, atlanto-occipital assimilation, and assorted congenital anomalies.

The arachnoid membranes are projections of connective tissue in the subarachnoid space that connect the arachnoid mater to the pia mater. These are underappreciated and largely unrecognized by most neuroradiologists despite being found to be increasingly important in the pathogenesis, imaging, and treatment of communicating hydrocephalus. This review aims to provide neuroradiologists with an overview of the history, embryology, histology, anatomy, and normal imaging appearance of these membranes, as well as some examples of their clinical importance.

Mullerian duct remnants result from incomplete regression, a defect that occurs during sexual differentiation. Ninety percent of patients with mullerian remnants also have an associated disorder of sexual differentiation such as hypospadias. Presenting signs and symptoms are recurrent bladder infection, perineal pain, dysuria, or infertility. The purpose of this case report is to recount an unusual presentation of a mullerian duct remnant with recurrent epididymo-orchitis and to discuss the embryology, diagnosis, and management of this condition.

Fenestration of the A2 segment is extremely rare. Cerebrovascular fenestration may be associated with an increased incidence of cerebral aneurysm and other vascular anomalies. Two case reports are presented which identify a fenestration of the A2 segment and other normal variations of the intra-cerebral circulation. A review of the literature has been undertaken to determine the prevalence and embryology of anterior cerebral artery fenestrations, their clinical significance and the association with aneurysm formation and other intracranial vascular anomalies.

Persistence of the buccopharyngeal membrane (BPM) also called the oropharyngeal membrane is a rare congenital oropharyngeal anomaly. We report a case of an adult aboriginal male patient with a membrane that closed his oropharyngeal isthmus except for a 2 cm diameter central perforation. The patient had no symptoms related to this membrane and no other congenital anomalies were found. This finding has not previously been reported in an adult. The embryology and management of this rare condition is discussed.

Persistent proatlantal artery type 1 is one of the four anastomotic vessels between the carotid and vertebrobasilar arterial systems. Persistence of this embryonic anastomosis is extremely rare. We present such a case with bilateral persistent proatlantal arteries that arose from internal carotid arteries, entered the skull via the foramen magnum and united with the horizontal portions of vertebral arteries. We also mention its embryology, potential clinical implications, and differentiating features between two types of proatlantal arteries.
