New epidemio-clinical insights into cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum in Casablanca, Morocco.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) represents a global public health challenge. In Morocco, the disease raises several concerns, such as geographical expansion, clinical heterogeneity, and the emergence of new Leishmania species. Our objective was to describe a new epidemiological and clinical profile caused by Leishmania infantum in patients diagnosed in Casablanca, Morocco. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study from 2012 to 2023. Epidemiological and clinical data were collected from patients meeting the inclusion criteria using a standardized clinical and epidemiological data

Mendelian randomization studies of periodontitis: Understanding benefits and natural limitations in an applied context.

Mendelian randomization (MR) is a flexible analytical tool that has been widely applied to strengthen causal inference in observational epidemiology and is now gaining attention in many areas including periodontal research. The interpretation of results drawn from MR is based on a series of assumptions, which can be unrealistic or difficult to meet faithfully in some settings. However, we argue that with care, this does not necessarily prevent valuable deployment of the approach. We argue that clarity of presentation as well as careful assessment of specific analytical conditions is a fundamen

Implication of serum and salivary albumin tests in the recent oral health related epidemiological studies: A narrative review.

Albumin is the most abundant protein in human serum and a specific amount of albumin also can be found in the saliva. It has several physiological functions such as blood colloidal osmotic pressure, antioxidant activity, binding and transporting of endogenous and exogenous substrates. We conducted an electronic search across several databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Embase and Science Direct using the relevant MeSH terms and keywords like "albumin", "serum albumin", "salivary albumin", "oral health" "dental caries" and "epidemiology". Only the epidemiological studies published betwee

Spatial analysis of human and livestock anthrax in Lai Chau province, Vietnam (2004-2021).

Anthrax is reported globally with varying disease intensity and seasonality among countries. In Vietnam, anthrax epidemiology and ecology remain understudied. We used historical data of human and livestock anthrax from 2004 to 2021 in Lai Chau province, to identify spatial clusters of human and livestock anthrax, describe epidemiological characteristics, and compare livestock anthrax vaccine coverage to human and livestock disease incidence. Local Moran's I (LISA) using spatial Bayes smoothed commune-level cumulative incidence (per 10,000) for the study period, epidemiological descriptive stat

Identification of asymptomatic Entamoeba histolytica infection by a serological screening test: A cross-sectional study of an HIV-negative men who have sex with men cohort in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Amebiasis, caused by Entamoeba histolytica, is spreading in developing countries and in many developed countries as a sexually transmitted infection. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of serological screening to identify asymptomatic E. histolytica infection as a potential epidemiological control measure to limit its spread. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This cross-sectional study was carried out between January and March 2021 in an HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) cohort at the National Center for Global Health and Medicine. Serological screening was performed using a

[Circulation of Echinococcus granulosus in Los Antiguos, Santa Cruz].

Hydatidosis - caused by the parasite Echinococcus granulosus - is a zoonosis endemic to the province of Santa Cruz, associated with areas of livestock production. Once infected, man may remain asymptomatic for a prolonged period but the disease has an important impact on public health owing to the complexity and costs of its treatment. This study aimed at assessing the prevalence of environmental E. granulosus infection in rural and peri-urban areas of the town of Los Antiguos, through the detection of antigens in scattered canine feces, and to identify risk factors for transmission. From May-

An epidemiologic risk prediction model for ovarian cancer in Europe: the EPIC study.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer has a high case-fatality ratio, largely due to late diagnosis. Epidemiologic risk prediction models could help identify women at increased risk who may benefit from targeted prevention measures, such as screening or chemopreventive agents. METHODS: We built an ovarian cancer risk prediction model with epidemiologic risk factors from 202,206 women in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study. RESULTS: Older age at menopause, longer duration of hormone replacement therapy, and higher body mass index were included as increasing ovarian can

Integrating the landscape epidemiology and genetics of RNA viruses: rabies in domestic dogs as a model.

Landscape epidemiology and landscape genetics combine advances in molecular techniques, spatial analyses and epidemiological models to generate a more real-world understanding of infectious disease dynamics and provide powerful new tools for the study of RNA viruses. Using dog rabies as a model we have identified how key questions regarding viral spread and persistence can be addressed using a combination of these techniques. In contrast to wildlife rabies, investigations into the landscape epidemiology of domestic dog rabies requires more detailed assessment of the role of humans in disease s

Mycotoxins and human health.

Mycotoxins have been investigated in relation to a wide range of adverse human health effects, but the evidence for all but a small number of associations is limited. Thus, the full impact on human health of the widespread exposure to mycotoxins remains to be defined. The main exception is for aflatoxins; epidemiological, experimental, and mechanistic studies have contributed to establishing aflatoxins as a cause of human liver cancer, with a particularly elevated risk in people chronically infected with hepatitis B virus. In addition, acute aflatoxicosis after exposure to high dietary toxin l

Epidemiology of fascioliasis in human endemic areas.

Considered a secondary zoonotic disease until the mid-1990s, human fascioliasis is at present emerging or re-emerging in many countries, including increases of prevalence and intensity and geographical expansion. Research in recent years has justified the inclusion of fascioliasis in the list of important human parasitic diseases. At present, fascioliasis is a vector-borne disease presenting the widest known latitudinal, longitudinal and altitudinal distribution. Fasciola hepatica has succeeded in expanding from its European original geographical area to colonize five continents, despite theor

A semiparametric empirical likelihood method for data from an outcome-dependent sampling scheme with a continuous outcome.

Outcome-dependent sampling (ODS) schemes can be a cost effective way to enhance study efficiency. The case-control design has been widely used in epidemiologic studies. However, when the outcome is measured on a continuous scale, dichotomizing the outcome could lead to a loss of efficiency. Recent epidemiologic studies have used ODS sampling schemes where, in addition to an overall random sample, there are also a number of supplemental samples that are collected based on a continuous outcome variable. We consider a semiparametric empirical likelihood inference procedure in which the underlying

Using sexually transmitted disease incidence as a surrogate marker for HIV incidence in prevention trials: a modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Because many of the sexual behaviors that place individuals at risk of acquiring HIV are the same as those that place them at risk for other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), researchers and policymakers have called for the use of non-HIV STDs as surrogate markers for HIV infection. GOALS: This study examined the epidemiologic conditions under which changes in STD incidence are associated with changes in HIV incidence. STUDY DESIGN: A mathematical model of HIV/STD transmission was applied to empirical data from a large HIV prevention intervention. The association between part

Ambient air pollution as a risk factor for lung cancer.

Epidemiologic studies over the last 40 years have observed that general ambient air pollution, chiefly due to the by-products of the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, is associated with small relative increases in lung cancer. The evidence derives from studies of lung cancer trends, studies of occupational groups, comparisons of urban and rural populations, and case-control and cohort studies using diverse exposure metrics. Recent prospective cohort studies observed 30-50% increases in the risk of lung cancer in relation to approximately a doubling of respirable particle exposure. While t

Comparative typing of Pseudomonas aeruginosa by random amplification of polymorphic DNA or pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of DNA macrorestriction fragments.

Eighty-seven strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were typed by random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of macrorestriction fragments. Stains were clustered on the basis of interpretative criteria as presented previously for the PFGE analysis. Clusters of strains were also defined on the basis of epidemiological data and subsequently reanalyzed by RAPD. It was found that in an RAPD assay employing the enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence ERIC2 as a primer, single band differences can be ignored; in this case, clonally related

Fetal death from syphilis: an epidemiologic evaluation in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil.

An epidemiologic study was done of five Ribeirão Preto women whose pregnancies ended in fetal death from syphilis at the University Hospital of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School, São Paulo, in 1991. The study sought to establish the epidemiologic profiles of these women, determine the prenatal care they had received, assess the risk factors involved, and propose strategies for controlling syphilis during pregnancy within the region. Data were collected through home interviews with the study subjects. Obstetric (maternal and fetal) information obtained from these interviews was subsequently ver

Associations of neonicotinoid exposure with renal function: A cross-sectional study with long-term toxicological validation.

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) continuously exert chronic effects on human health, yet their impacts on renal function remain understudied. This study investigates the association between NEOs and renal function utilizing an integrated epidemiological and toxicological approach. Urinary NEOs and their characteristic metabolites were quantified using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in 847 individuals from a Yinchuan community-dwelling elderly cohort. Multiple epidemiological models were employed to systematically evaluate both single and mixed exposure associations with

Listeria ivanovii-an underestimated pathogen in veterinary medicine.

Listeria (L.) ivanovii is a Gram-positive, facultatively intracellular rod-shaped bacterium. It is predominantly associated with animal infections, particularly in ruminants. Unlike L. monocytogenes, which is widely recognised as a major zoonotic and foodborne pathogen, L. ivanovii is often overlooked, despite documented cases of abortion, stillbirth, and neonatal septicemia in sheep, goats, and cattle. This review provides an overview of L. ivanovii taxonomy, microbiological characteristics, virulence determinants, host adaptation, epidemiology, transmission routes, diagnostic challenges, ant
