Nurses' Scope of Practice in Home-Based Care: An Observational Study of Care Activities, Clinical Decision-Making, and Contextual Modulators-The DECIDE Project.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Nurses' scope of practice is central to healthcare delivery. While scope of practice is well described conceptually, there is limited empirical research capturing how it is enacted in everyday clinical practice. This study aimed to describe scope of practice in home-based care, focusing on care activities, clinical decision-making, professional autonomy and contextual modulators. DESIGN: A multi-method observational design. SETTING: Three nursing teams within home healthcare services in a Norwegian municipality-the DECIDE project. METHODS: Quantitative and qualitative da

Second-Level Nurses' Experiences of Workplace Violence: A Scoping Review.

AIM: To synthesise and map what is known about second-level nurses' workplace violence experience. BACKGROUND: Workplace violence has become a topic of focus in nursing over recent years. Research demonstrates that there is a growing body of literature focusing on first-level nurses' workplace violence experiences, but those of second-level nurses, a crucial component of the health workforce in many countries, have not been well explored. Evaluation. A scoping review was conducted from January 2000 up to March 2022 using Arksey and O'Malley's framework and databases, including ABI/Inform Coll

The mediating and moderating role of psychological resilience between occupational stress and mental health of psychiatric nurses: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The particular occupational stress of psychiatric nurses has a negative impact on their mental health. There is evidence that psychological resilience can promote mental health; however, the relationship between resilience in occupational stress and mental health of psychiatric nurses is unclear, and mental health was assessed from a psychopathological perspective, neglecting the role of positive psychology. Therefore, this study was based on a dual-factor model of mental health, describing mental health in terms of both positive well-being and psychiatric symptoms. We aimed to inv

Using Evidence to Prevent Risk Associated With Perioperative Pressure Injuries.

Pressure injuries (PI) are a significant concern for surgical patients due to prolonged immobility and potential exposure to other risk factors associated with procedures. PI prevention strategies should begin early in the patient's surgical encounter starting with preoperative assessment. Much literature has been published to discuss PI risk factors, assessment tools, and evidence-based prevention measures. The purpose of this article is to critically review current best evidence to holistically assess patient risk for Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries (HAPI) and review current tools used f

Skin and soft tissue abscesses: assessment and management.

Skin and soft tissue abscesses (SSTAs) are painful localised collections of pus in the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue which, without timely and effective intervention, can progress to serious complications including systemic sepsis and necrotising fasciitis. The evidence emphasises the limitations of a one-size-fits-all surgical approach, where treatment of SSTAs often defaults to incision and drainage. This article discusses the aetiology, assessment and management of patients presenting with purulent SSTAs and identifies opportunities for nurses to refine their assessment practice

Improving the referral process for familial breast cancer genetic counselling: findings of three randomised controlled trials of two interventions.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of two complementary interventions, using familial breast cancer as a model condition. The primary care intervention consisted of providing computerised referral guidelines and related education to GPs. The nurse counsellor intervention evaluated genetic nurses as substitutes for specialist geneticists in the initial assessment and management of referred patients. DESIGN: The computerised referral guidelines study was a pragmatic, cluster randomised controlled trial (RCT) with general practices randomised to intervention or cont

Cognitive behavioural therapy in practice-nurse led behaviour-intervention for low back pain in German primary care - qualitative process evaluation of a feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: There is evidence that cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is effective for patients with chronic low back pain. However, there are by far not enough CBT therapists available to meet this demand. The involvement of specially trained practice nurses could be useful for the implementation of a CBT-based therapy concept in German primary care due to better accessibility and cost-effectiveness. The aim of this pilot study is to evaluate the acceptance of this approach in a pragmatic group programme for patients with chronic back pain. METHODS: In collaboration with a psychologist, p

Alternative approaches to managing a non-draining urinary catheter.

Best practice in the management of indwelling catheters has been debated for many years. Proactive preventative strategies are widely considered favourable, but inevitably patients are referred with sudden, acute or unexpected non-draining catheters requiring a reactive or problem-solving response. This article considers the lack of comprehensive evidence on which nurses can base their practice when problems arise. It proposes that a clinical framework is necessary to guide nurses logically and rationally through the decision-making process. In addition, the case for diagnostic irrigation is a

"Death is a sensitive topic when you are surrounded by life": Nurses experiences with pregnancy loss.

OBJECTIVE: Although there is increasing evidence on the psychosocial adjustment and experiencing pregnancy loss from the patient's perspective, few studies have investigated the nurses' experience perceptions. This study aimed to understand the experience of nurses involved in pregnancy loss care based on the self-fulfillment model of communication. METHODS: A qualitative approach was developed through semi-structured interviews to 16 nurses working in an Obstetrics and Maternal-Fetal Department of a local hospital. Based on grounded theory approach, data was analyzed with NVivo 12 software.

Predictive Roles of Fear of Missing Out and Rumination in Depression Among ICU Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs) experience occupational stress, which increases their vulnerability to psychological disorders such as depression. Depression among ICU nurses not only affects their mental well-being but may also impair the quality of patient care. Two psychological factors, fear of missing out (FoMO) and rumination, have been proposed as psychological contributors to depression. However, their predictive roles among ICU nurses remain insufficiently explored. AIM: To evaluate the predictive roles of FoMO and rumination in depression among ICU nurses.

A qualitative study of health professions curricula and management of lateral ankle ligament sprain demonstrates inconsistency.

BACKGROUND: Health educators aim to graduate students who are safe, effective and practice evidence-based medicine (EBM). Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) are tools for translating evidence into clinical practice for health professionals and educators who lack time to appraise the evidence. There have been CPGs published for lateral ankle ligament sprains (LALS) for physiotherapists, nurses, and doctors. Clinical decision rules have also been developed for LALS to increase the safety of practice. The Ottawa Ankle Rules (OAR) were developed to screen for the need for an x-ray following an an
