Detection of Position-Related Sciatic Nerve Dysfunction by Somatosensory Evoked Potentials During Spinal Surgery.

It is well established that intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) are sensitive to plexus and peripheral nerve dysfunction related to malpositioning of patients during spinal surgery. While most reports focus on upper extremity nerve or brachial plexus effects, there is very little on detection of sciatic nerve compromise. Recording of the SSEP at the popliteal fossa is a common strategy to aid in troubleshooting stimulus-related problems or distal peripheral tibial nerve failure; yet position-related sciatic nerve effects may not be realized by changes in the popliteal fossa …

Neonatal Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials Are Affected by Clinical Conditions Occurring in Early Prematurity.

PURPOSE: Cortical auditory evoked potentials may serve as an early indicator of developmental problems in the auditory cortex. The aim of the study was to determine the effect on neonatal cortical auditory processing of clinical conditions occurring in early prematurity. METHODS: Sixty-seven preterm infants born at 29 weeks mean gestational age (range, 23-34 weeks) were recorded at a mean postconception age of 35 weeks, before discharge from the third level neonatal intensive care unit. The average of 330 responses to standard 1000 Hz pure tones delivered in an oddball paradigm was recorded a…

Specificity and sensitivity of visual evoked potentials in the diagnosis of schizophrenia: rethinking VEPs.

Alterations of the visual evoked potential (VEP) component P1 at the occipital region represent the most extended functional references of early visual dysfunctions in schizophrenia (SZ). However, P1 deficits are not reliable enough to be accepted as standard susceptibility markers for use in clinical psychiatry. We have previously reported a novel approach combining a standard checkerboard pattern-reversal stimulus, spectral resolution VEP, source detection techniques and statistical procedures which allowed the correct classification of all patients as SZ compared to controls. Here, we appli

Response Properties of Urethral Distension Evoked Unifiber Afferent Potentials in the Lower Urinary Tract.

PURPOSE: It is well known that afferent input from the urethra can modulate bladder function. Nevertheless, little is known about the functional properties of urethral afferents. In the current study we investigated the effect of urethral distension on single fiber afferent activities of the lower urinary tract in the female rat. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Female Sprague Dawley® rats were anesthetized. Single fiber afferent activities were recorded from the left L6 dorsal root and classified by conduction velocity. The response of pelvic and pudendal units on urethral distension (60 seconds) was

Modulation of visual evoked potentials by high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in migraineurs.

OBJECTIVE: High-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) modulates cortical excitability. We investigated its effect on visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in migraine. METHODS: Thirty-two headache-free controls (CO), 25 interictal (MINT) and 7 preictal migraineurs (MPRE) remained after exclusions. VEPs to 8' and 65' checks were averaged in six blocks of 100 single responses. VEPs were recorded before, directly after and 25min after 10Hz rTMS. The study was blinded for diagnosis during recording and for diagnosis and block number during analysis. First block amplitudes and ha…

Co-registering kinematics and evoked related potentials during visually guided reach-to-grasp movements.

BACKGROUND: In non-human primates grasp-related sensorimotor transformations are accomplished in a circuit involving the anterior intraparietal sulcus (area AIP) and both the ventral and the dorsal sectors of the premotor cortex (vPMC and dPMC, respectively). Although a human homologue of such a circuit has been identified, the time course of activation of these cortical areas and how such activity relates to specific kinematic events has yet to be investigated. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We combined kinematic and event-related potential techniques to explicitly test how activity within

Neuromodulation of evoked muscle potentials induced by epidural spinal-cord stimulation in paralyzed individuals.

Epidural stimulation (ES) of the lumbosacral spinal cord has been used to facilitate standing and voluntary movement after clinically motor-complete spinal-cord injury. It seems of importance to examine how the epidurally evoked potentials are modulated in the spinal circuitry and projected to various motor pools. We hypothesized that chronically implanted electrode arrays over the lumbosacral spinal cord can be used to assess functionally spinal circuitry linked to specific motor pools. The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional and topographic organization of compound evoked…

The changes of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) after vertebrobasilar artery ischemia in rabbits.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) have been used as a valuable neurophysiologic index of neuronal dysfunction in the level of the brainstem. BAEPs are also useful in subdividing evoked potentials into normal, slight, or pronounced in patients with vertebrobasilar insufficiency. We investigated the changes of BAEP after vertebrobasilar artery ischemia in rabbits and its significance in clinical work. A brainstem ischemic model was made by unilateral extracranial occlusion of vertebral artery to monitor BAEPs at 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 min after occlusion. We found that peak lat…

Right-frontal slow negative potentials evoked by occipital TMS are reduced in NREM sleep.

Occipital transcranial magnetic stimulation applied in a task-free experimental setup leads to enhanced relative negativity of frontally recorded evoked slow potentials under the influence of caffeine (Murd et al., 2010 [26]). We tested whether this increased negativity could be reversed when a similar magnetic stimulation is applied during quiet sleep where consciousness is absent. Consistently with the hypothesis, non-REM sleep led to relative more positive slow brain potentials, compared to wakefulness. This effect was lateralized to the right hemisphere. We conclude that TMS indeed elicits

Flash visual evoked potentials in mice can be modulated by transcranial direct current stimulation.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in humans has been shown to affect the size of visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in a polarity-dependent way. VEPs have been widely employed in mice to study the visual system in physiological and pathological conditions and are extensively used as animal models of neurological and visual disorders. The present study was performed to evaluate whether mice VEPs could be modulated by tDCS in the same manner as in humans. We describe here the effects of 10 min tDCS (anodal, cathodal or no stimulation) on flash-VEPs in C57BL/6 mice under sevoflurane ane…

[Contribution of the vestibular evoked myogenic potentials to the study of the vestibular neuritis].

INTRODUCTION: Until recently, the only tests available to provide information about vestibular function were caloric and kinetic tests, which only give us information about the external semicircular canal and the superior vestibular nerve. In recent years the development of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials has allowed us to assess the saccule and the inferior vestibular nerve. Our aim is, by studying the caloric test results as well as the vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in patients with Vestibular Neuritis, to determine whether they have involvement of the superior, inferior or bot
