BACKGROUND Pediatric sinonasal tumors are rare, accounting for about 4% of all pediatric head and neck neoplasms. Due to their nonspecific symptoms such as nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and facial pain, these tumors often present diagnostic challenges and lead to delays in managment. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial to optimize clinical outcomes. CASE REPORT This is a retrospective review of 4 pediatric patients with diagnosis of sinonasal tumors at a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia. The series includes 2 benign tumors, osteoma and juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, and 2 malignant

OBJECTIVE: Parotid tumors are rare neoplasms in adults but are exceedingly infrequent in adolescents. We aimed to determine the clinical characteristics and outcomes of parotid tumors in adolescents under 20 years old.
METHODS: Between 1999 and 2020, 979 cases of benign parotid tumors and 236 cases of malignant parotid tumors were treated surgically in our department. Of these, 12 benign cases (1.2%) and 9 malignant cases (3.8%) were in adolescents. There were no benign or malignant cases for those aged under 10 years.
RESULTS: Regarding the histological type, all benign tumors were pleomorp

Facial symmetry, as well as function, remains the big challenge for surgeons who attempt mandibular reconstruction. Nowadays several studies recommend the use of computer aided surgery (CAS) and CAD/CAM technology to guide mandibular segmental osteotomies and reconstruction using free fibula flap. Although these systems have radically changed the way of doing mandibular reconstructive surgery, they are expensive and require extended periods of time for prototypation. This may be an important limitation in case of malignant neoplasms which require short-term treatment. The aim of our study is t

This article determines the efficacy of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (endoDCR) in patients who have undergone adjuvant external beam radiation therapy (XRT) following head and neck cancer resection. A retrospective chart review was performed on all patients who underwent endoDCR between 2006 and 2014 at a tertiary referral center. Cases were reviewed and selected for the following inclusion criteria: history of adjuvant sinonasal XRT following head and neck cancer resection, preoperative probing and irrigation demonstrating nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO), postoperative probing and ir

Primary CNS lymphoma (PCNSL) is now thought to constitute 3% of all intracranial neoplasms. PCNSL occurrence in the sella turcica region is an extremely rare finding. We present a 37-year-old male with primary pituitary lymphoma treated in our department. The patient, who had had no previous illnesses, was admitted to the hospital because of bilateral blurred vision. Findings on physical examination were normal except for temporal parts of field of vision deficit. No abnormalities were found in his bilateral ocular movement, facial sensory function or motor function. His blood count and bioche

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumors constitute a highly heterogeneous group. There are few large epidemiological studies of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors in Greece. The aim of the present study was to define the pattern of parotid gland neoplasms on the island of Crete.
MATERIAL/METHODS: The medical records of 131 patients who underwent parotidectomy in the Otorhinolaryngology department of the University hospital of Heraklion over the last ten years were retrospectively reviewed. Gender and age of the patients, size, location, and histology of the tumors, as well as postoperative

Background/Objectives: Salivary gland tumors account for 2.0-6.5% of all head and neck neoplasms, approximately 70% of which are located in the parotid gland. Preoperative determination of tumor histology is a crucial step in the diagnostic and therapeutic pathway because it guides the choice of surgical technique, affecting the achievement of adequate resection margins and preservation of the facial nerve. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is the most commonly used cytologic method. However the complex and heterogenous histologic architecture of salivary gland tumors is associated with a

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Adrenal adenomas are benign neoplasms of the adrenal cortex which can be functional or non-functional. The functional tumors manifest as Cushing syndrome. Rarely, they are associated with high levels of metanephrine due to pheochromocytoma. Here, we report an extremely rare case of adrenal adenoma associated with raised metanephrine, but no histopathological evidence of medullary changes.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year female with diabetes, hypothyroidism, and hypertension was admitted for resistant hypertension, severe refractory hypokalemia, decreased sleep, fearf

Concurrent fasciculations and oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) can be presenting signs of motor neuron disease (MND); however, there are other causes for OD (neoplasms, surgery, and gastroesophageal diseases, among others). Fasciculations (anxiety, benign, or iatrogenic) are an uncommon side effect (<1%) of methylphenidate. A 30-year-old male noticed fasciculations in both gastrocnemii, reporting gradual cranial progression, culminating in diffuse fasciculations with facial involvement. One month later, he reported OD for solids and occasional cough for liquids. He denied weakness, fatigue, or wei

OBJECTIVE: Sphenopetroclival (SPC) meningiomas are considered among the most complex skull-base neoplasms to approach surgically. We aim to determine whether some SPC meningiomas can be safely and effectively treated using a modified minimally invasive pterional posterolateral transcavernous-transtentorial approach (MIPLATTA).
METHODS: Fourteen patients harboring SPC meningiomas were surgically treated through a MIPLATTA. MIPLATTA includes a minipterional craniotomy, anterior extradural clinoidectomy, peeling of the temporal fossa, decompression of cranial nerves (CNs) in the cavernous sinus,

Vestibular schwannomas (VSs), also called acoustic neuromas, are benign intracranial neoplasms of the vestibulocochlear (VIII) cranial nerve. Management options include "wait-and-scan," stereotactic radiosurgery and surgical resection. Due to the proximity of the VIII nerve to the facial (VII) nerve in the cerebello-pontine angle, the VII nerve is particularly vulnerable to the effects of surgical resection. This can result in poor eye closure, lagophthalmos and resultant corneal exposure post VS resection. Additionally, compression from the tumor or resection can cause trigeminal (V) nerve da

INTRODUCTION: Odontomas are benign neoplasms originating from odontogenic tissues. Most of these masses are asymptomatic and can only be diagnosed correctly via radiological studies. Treatment of choice for management of odontoma involves surgical excision to prevent secondary complications and result in a favourable prognosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: This paper presents a rare case of odontoma of the middle ear in a four-year-old girl. The mass caused unilateral conductive hearing loss and facial nerve entrapment. We shed light on the typically vague clinical presentations of odontomas, as well a

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine tumors represent an expansive group of neoplasms that share an etiology of epithelial origin with neuroendocrine differentiation. Poorly-differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas behave similarly to their aggressive pulmonary counterpart, small cell lung carcinoma. Most patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors present with symptoms of metastasis, most commonly to the liver. There have been no case reports, to our knowledge, until now that demonstrate metastasis to the central nervous system.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old male with poorly-differen

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are a rare subset of pancreatic neoplasms. We report the case of a 33-year-old female patient who was admitted to the Diabetes Clinic of Craiova, Romania, due to a two-year history of episodic neuroglycopenic hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemic symptoms, suggestive for insulinoma associated with facial and upper trunk flushing characteristic to carcinoid syndrome. During these episodes, the laboratory investigations showed hypoglycemia (38 mg/dL), hyperinsulinemia (54.72 μU/mL) and normal values of beta-hydroxybutyrate, chromogranin A, serotonin, anti-insulin antibod

The uncommon aggressive pituitary tumors are named carcinomas when metastases are detected, either in the central nervous system and/or systemically. Some cases are associated with hormonal overproduction, but most are diagnosed because of local symptoms. These neoplasias are generally refractory to current treatments. A 51 year-old woman presented sudden onset of headache, left arm paresis and left facial hypoesthesia. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a pituitary tumor invading the left sphenoidal and cavernous sinuses. Laboratory data excluded hormonal hyperse

We present a 10-year retrospective study at a tertiary center designed to evaluate the advantages, complications, and comparative results using lateral circumflex femoral artery (LCFA) system free flaps for cranial base reconstruction. In this study, a cranial base defect refers to exposed intracranial contents to the skin, paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx, oropharynx, or oral cavity. These defects resulted from resections of primary or recurrent neoplasms or from secondary problems after cranial base surgery. We performed 20 flaps in 20 patients. The selection of flap was as follows: 8 combinat

We present the case of a Caucasian woman with a histology-confirmed granuloma faciale of the tarsoconjunctival surface of the eyelid. A 66-year-old female patient presented with a 1-week history of painless left upper eyelid mass without history of allergy, trauma, or ocular surgery. There was an elevated well-demarcated flesh-colored lesion within the tarsus. Diagnosis was confirmed by history of wedge biopsy, which demonstrated a mixed inflammatory cell infiltrate on a background of fibrosis with subtle focal leucocytoclasis. The lesion was fully excised without evidence of recurrence at fol

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal-dominant disorder that causes the formation of hamartomatous tumors such as facial angiofibromas (FAs). We present a combination of surgical debulking via shave biopsy, curettage, and electrocautery followed by application of sirolimus ointment 1% to the nose to treat FAs in the setting of TSC. This novel approach achieved an optimal therapeutic response in our patient with minimal recurrence of FAs after 1 year of follow-up.
