INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis is an extremely serious exceptional infectious process affecting subcutaneous soft tissues with skin gangrene and vascular thromboses. Starting from a case repat of necrotizing fasciitis of the eyelids and orbit, which occurred in a child of 4, we analyse the early diagnostic elements and the urgency of treatment of a pathology which can rapidly be life-threatening.
OBSERVATION: A child, aged 4 presented a necrotizing fasciitis of the eyelid and orbit with serious toxic shock, after minor skin abrasion.
RESULT: Resuscitation and parenteral antibiotic thera

UNLABELLED: Chickenpox has a high risk of invasive group A streptococcal disease and necroziting fasciitis.
CASE REPORT: A five-year-old girl, during chickenpox treated with ibuprofen, developed sepsis and edematous and necrotic lesions of the pelvis and the abdominal wall. The child improved with surgical treatment and adjunction of clindamycin to the antibiotic therapy.
CONCLUSION: We review the optimal medical and surgical treatment of necrotizing fasciitis and discuss the role of chickenpox and non steroidal antiinflammatory agents in this disease.

Cellulitis and necrotizing fasciitis can be distinguished by the depth of the cutaneous lesion and classically by the different bacteria implicated. This classification is not taken into account by the practitioner because of a similar therapeutic strategy. That is why most authors used a single title: necrotizing soft tissue infection. The potential severity of these infections required a quick diagnosis to decrease the risk of mortality and severe functional consequences. The analysis of the literature doesn't allow to establish the incidence of these infections. It was demonstrated that inf

OBJECTIVES: To characterize patients with primary necrotizing fasciitis of the male genitalia (Fournier's gangrene) and to identify risk factors and prognostic variables of survival.
METHODS: Fifty consecutive patients with primary necrotizing fasciitis of the male genitalia treated at our institution during a 15-year period between 1984 and 1998 were retrospectively analyzed. Of these patients, 44 (88.0%) were found to be eligible for analysis of the outcome parameters. Univariate survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier algorithm followed by multivariate analysis of statistica

BACKGROUND: Early recognition and treatment are important factors that can help improve survival following necrotizing fasciitis. However, early recognition is complicated by the difficulty in distinguishing the infection from other, less serious soft-tissue infections such as cellulitis. We reviewed the charts of children presenting with necrotizing fasciitis at a tertiary care pediatric hospital in Ontario to document potential increases in the frequency of cases and to identify clinical and laboratory features that could help distinguish between necrotizing fasciitis and cellulitis.

PURPOSE: Although most cases of cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) are odontogenic in origin, reports of this disease in the dental literature are sparse. The purpose of this study was to review the cases treated on our service, and to analyze the features of this disease and the responses to management, to supplement the understanding of this relatively rare and life-threatening disease.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All cases of infection admitted to the OMS service in a period of 10.5 years were studied retrospectively. The diagnosis of CNF was established by the findings on surgical exploration

Special care in dentistry : official publication of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry1999eng
Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly spreading, life-threatening, bacterial disease. Mortality rates have been estimated to vary between 8.7% and 74%. Mortality depends on many factors, one of which is early recognition. Necrotizing fasciitis of dental origin has a low prevalence and as such presents diagnostic challenges for the dentist. The literature is reviewed, and a case history is presented.

Aggravation of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) by the administration of non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has recently been suggested. A rabbit model of streptococcal NF was used to study the effects of parenteral administration of an NSAID on NF evolution and outcome. Of 16 rabbits inoculated with a Streptococcus pyogenes suspension together with staphylococcal alpha toxin, 8 were treated with two doses of 4 mg/kg diclofenac on day 1 after inoculation. Clinical, bacteriological and histological studies were performed until day 10. Under our experimental conditions, NSAID treatment sign

Forty-two cases of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) surgically confirmed between January 1991 and October 1995 were retrospectively reviewed. This was done in order to describe the underlying diseases, clinical presentations, etiology and outcome of NF and to assess the prognostic value of a simplified severity scoring system. The system scores changes in consciousness status, body temperature, blood pressure and ventilation to determine the likely outcome of NF. Twenty-five men and 17 women with a median age of 51 years (range, 17-87 yr) were included. Diabetes mellitus (57.1%) was the most common

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to review the literature concerning Necrotizing Fasciitis (N.F.) and to discuss a typical case where late diagnosis led to severe consequences.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A young male patient with no pertinent medical history, progressively developed a large swelling of his foot and severe pain 3-4 days following a simple contusion. The absence of an entry site lead to local incision without microbiological study. The patient developed blistering on the leg, then septic shock necessitating amputation.
DISCUSSION: N.F. is an infectious necrosis of the su

A 68-year-old Japanese woman with sepsis developed a gangrene on her left cheek from a small wound in contact with a gastric tube. Klebsiella pneumoniae was cultured from the sputum, wound, and the blood and was assumed to be responsible for this condition, possibly through thrombosis of an artery.

Necrotizing fasciitis exists on a continuum of soft tissue infections between cellulitis and myonecrosis. It has been uncommonly reported in infancy (1-10). The diagnosis depends on recognition of the characteristic rapidly progressive clinical course and demonstration of full-thickness skin necrosis with involvement of the fascial planes overlying the muscle. The organisms most often recovered are beta-hemolytic Streptococcus or Staphylococcus aureus, but other aerobic and anaerobic organisms in single or mixed infection have been reported (1, 2, 11, 12). This infection has a significant mort

The case history of a patient with subcutaneous emphysema of the abdomen from sigmoid diverticulitis is presented. The mechanisms for developing abdominal wall emphysema are reviewed. Thus when the gas originates from the gastrointestinal tract, mechanical factors are mainly responsible for this phenomenon. These inculde a direct communication through a colonocutaneous fistula. Gas may, however, also be spread into the abdominal wall by high intraintestinal pressures. Infection with gas-producing organisms may be associated with subcutaneous emphysema. This is particularly true when the emphys

Cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis is a life-threatening surgical emergency associated with significant morbidity and mortality, requiring early diagnosis and aggressive multimodal management. Reconstruction of the resulting soft tissue defects represents an additional challenge, particularly in resource-limited settings where microsurgical infrastructure may not be available. We report the case of a 42-year-old man who developed cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis secondary to an odontogenic infection. Management consisted of broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, early surgical debridement, and

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive, life-threatening soft tissue infection that is often misdiagnosed in its early stages due to clinical similarities with cellulitis. Early recognition and prompt surgical intervention are essential to reducing morbidity and mortality. This report presents one case of NF initially manifesting as cellulitis in a patient with multiple risk factors, including intravenous drug use and recent incarceration. Despite initial antibiotic therapy and transient clinical improvement, the patient experienced worsening pain and systemic symptoms. Imaging id

RATIONALE: Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a severe, gas-forming renal infection typically associated with diabetes mellitus. Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection with significant morbidity. Although concurrent EPN and NF have been described, delayed NF arising years after previously treated EPN is exceedingly rare. This report highlights a unique case of abdominal wall NF secondary to a chronic infectious pathway originating from prior EPN.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old woman with poorly controlled type II diabetes mellitus initially presented wit

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a kind of rapidly destructive soft tissue infection with an unfavorable prognosis. It is usually caused by highly virulent bacteria. Recently, the incidence of NF caused by atypical opportunistic pathogens has been increasing. Aeromonas dhakensis is increasingly emerging as a new, highly virulent, biofilm-producing, and multidrug resistant cause of soft tissue infection. The current strains of A. dhakensis are causing increasingly severe disease, with delayed diagnosis and treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of NF caused by A. dhakensi
