Anxiety related disorders in adolescents in the United Arab Emirates: a population based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are common among children and adolescents. However, there is a paucity of up-to-date data on the prevalence and correlates of anxiety-related disorders among children and adolescents in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). METHODS: We conducted a cross sectional study to determine the prevalence of specific anxiety-related disorders (e.g., generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, separation anxiety, social anxiety) in the UAE, and identify correlations between these disorders and adolescents' demographic variables. Participants were 968 adolescents aged 13-18 yea

Alleged biological father incest: a forensic approach.

Paternal incest is one of the most serious forms of intrafamilial sexual abuse with clinical, social, and legal relevance. A retrospective study was performed, based on forensic reports and judicial decisions of alleged cases of biological paternal incest of victims under 18 years old (n = 215) from 2003 to 2008. Results highlight that in a relevant number of cases: victims were female; the abuse begun at an early age with reiteration; the alleged perpetrator presented a history of sexual crimes against children; sexual practices were physically poorly intrusive, which associated with a forens

[Consensus, hedonism: the characteristics of new family and their consequences for the development of children].

Over the last three decades, the marital family model described by Durkheim at the end of the nineteenth century has undergone numerous changes, e.g. questioning about the principle of authority, women emancipation, occurrence of the "new fathers", the growing influence of the media on the daily life of families, the less frequent and most precious child (due to the reduced number of children per family),... Through clinical, psychoanalytical and developmental models we, here, analyze these changes together with their impact on child. Historical and sociological approaches also allowed us to e

The social consequences of teenage parenthood.

The adolescent mothers consistently experienced great difficulty in realizing their life plans, when compared with their classmates who did not become pregnant premaritally in their early teens. Marital instability, school disruption, economic problems, and difficulty in family size regulation and child-rearing were some of the complications brought on by their premature, unscheduled childbearing.

What is the role of paternal genetic transmission on risk for PTSD and internalizing and externalizing disorders?

BACKGROUND: We utilize a novel contrastive genetic-epidemiological method, the Maternal Half-Sibling Families with Discordant Fathers (MHSFDF) design, to examine cross-generational genetic transmission of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related internalizing major depression (MD), and externalizing disorders: alcohol use disorder (AUD) and drug use disorder (DUD). METHODS: Using Swedish national registries, we identified 72,467 maternal half-sibling pairs reared together whose biological fathers were discordant for the diagnoses of PTSD, MD, AUD, and DUD. Offspring selected had to ha

Parental experiences and understandings of stunting in children aged 1-36 mo in the Northern Province of Rwanda.

OBJECTIVES: Childhood stunting remains a major public health problem in the Northern Province of Rwanda, where approximately 27.1% of children aged 1-36 mo are stunted. While many risk factors have been documented, less is known about social and parenting processes in high-risk conditions of undernutrition for children. In this study, we aimed to explore parental experiences and understandings of the risk of childhood stunting in the Northern Province of Rwanda. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using focus group discussions with 120 parents-mothers and fathers separately-of children

Social Support in the Perinatal Period: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Life Course Antecedents.

BACKGROUND: Social support facilitates physical and mental health in the perinatal period for parents and their children. Yet, little is known about what predicts who will have access to support during this uniquely challenging time. From a life course perspective, the foundations of perinatal social support are likely to be evident well before parenthood. AIM: To systematically review published and grey literature reporting studies that examined associations between parental perinatal social support (pregnancy to 18 months postpartum) and preconception antecedents. METHODS: We searched Psyc

Case Report: A neonatal case of cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome with severe funisitis and neonatal asphyxia.

Cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome (CAPS) is a genetic disorder and autoinflammatory disease characterized by chronic inflammation throughout the body. The most severe form of CAPS, Chronic Infantile Neurologic Cutaneous, and Articular (CINCA) syndrome, also known as Neonatal Onset Multisystem Inflammatory Disease (NOMID), has three main features: skin rash, CNS involvement, and joint symptoms. Although these symptoms are typically reported shortly after birth, there have been a few reports of prenatal inflammation. Here, we report our experience managing a case of a CAPS infant born in se

ABO maternal-child discordance: Evidence of variable allelic expression and considerations for investigation.

BACKGROUND: We report a case of apparent mother-child ABO group noninheritance. A Caucasian mother initially typed as group O and her infant group AB. Investigation ruled out preanalytical causes such as mislabeled samples and in vitro fertilization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Red blood cells were characterized by routine serologic testing. Genomic data were analyzed by targeted polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and Sanger sequencing. Transferase structures were modeled using PyMOL molecular visualization software. RESULTS: Serologic testing initially demonstrate

Heritability of Corneal Curvature and Pentacam Topometric Indices: A Population-Based Study.

PURPOSE: To investigate familial aggregation of anterior and posterior corneal curvature, corneal astigmatism, and some corneal topometric indices using the Pentacam. METHODS: Of 3,851 eligible individuals who resided in the selected areas, 2,779 met the conditions for analysis. However, analysis was limited to families whose Pentacam measures were available for at least 2 family members (father or mother and a child), resulting in 1,383 individuals in 382 families. All selected subjects underwent a set of examinations, including refraction, uncorrected and corrected visual acuity measurement

Parental exposure to pesticides and childhood brain cancer: U.S. Atlantic coast childhood brain cancer study.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of childhood brain cancer remains largely unknown. However, previous studies have yielded suggestive associations with parental pesticide use. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate parental exposure to pesticides at home and on the job in relation to the occurrence of brain cancer in children. METHODS: We included 526 one-to-one-matched case-control pairs. Brain cancer cases were diagnosed at < 10 years of age, and were identified from statewide cancer registries of four U.S. Atlantic Coast states. We selected controls by random digit dialing. We conducted computer-assist

Report from the National Transplantation Pregnancy Registry (NTPR): outcomes of pregnancy after transplantation.

The NTPR maintains an ongoing active database to study the safety of pregnancy in transplant recipients and currently includes the outcomes of more than 900 female recipients who became pregnant after their transplant and just over 700 male recipients who fathered one or more pregnancies after receiving a transplant. Analyses include the long-term follow-up of the recipient's graft status and their offspring. Successful pregnancy outcomes have been noted for each solid organ recipient group. The Registry includes information on 1,097 pregnancies in 716 kidney recipients, 187 pregnancies in 111

Familial transmission and minimal sequence variability of human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) in Zaire.

Our group previously reported a strong familial clustering of HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) in Zaire, suggesting a familial transmission of the virus together with the presence of cofactors. In the present study among 84 relatives of 16 HTLV-I-positive or HAM/TSP index cases, we found that all 15 seropositive children had a seropositive mother and that all 15 children with a seropositive father but a seronegative mother were seronegative. Lymphocytes of 17 relatives from 2 families with a familial HTLV-I-associated neuropathy were tested in 2 polymerase ch

Unmet and Overlooked Needs of Pregnant Adolescents and Young Mothers in Zimbabwe: The Mixed-Methods "Kids With Kids" Study.

PURPOSE: Adolescent pregnancy is common across Africa. Although programs emphasize contraception, support for those who do become pregnant is limited. We conducted a mixed-methods study in Zimbabwe to understand the service gaps and the needs of pregnant adolescents. METHODS: Pregnant adolescents (<18 years) identified by community child workers underwent clinical and mental health assessment, and birth outcomes were recorded. Longitudinal in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 pregnant and postpartum adolescents in three waves; in addition, nonrepeat interviews were conducted with 10 nex

Geographic and Socioeconomic Determinants of Treatment Abandonment in Pediatric Acute Leukemia: A Cohort Study in South-Central Mexico.

IntroductionPediatric acute leukemia is the most common childhood malignancy and one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide, particularly, in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where treatment abandonment remains a major barrier to survival. Geographic accessibility and socioeconomic conditions are recognized determinants, but their combined influence in Mexico remains understudied. This study evaluated the association between geographic accessibility, socioeconomic factors, and treatment abandonment among children with acute leukemia in south-central Mexico. Methods

Adolescents at the crossroads: genetic associations between psychotic symptoms and antisocial traits.

Antisocial behaviour in youth has serious consequences at individual and societal level. Adolescence is also a critical period for the emergence of prodromal psychosis symptoms. Their co-occurrence may aggravate aggression and lead to severe adverse outcomes. Common genetic risk for psychosis, antisocial behaviour, and substance use has been suggested, but the putatively shared genetic architecture is unknown, and evidence in youth is limited. Here we examined whether common genetic liability indexed by polygenic risk scores (PRSs) relates to these complex traits in the Norwegian Mother, Fathe

The phenotypic and genetic relationship between adolescent mental health and time spent on social media, gaming, and TV.

Screen use is linked to adverse mental health outcomes in adolescents, but how associations vary across psychiatric diagnoses, mental symptoms, and types of screen-based activities remain unclear. The contribution of genetic factors to these associations is also largely unknown. We analysed data from 23,790 adolescents (aged 14-16) in the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), linking questionnaire responses on screen use to registry-based psychiatric diagnoses and self-reported symptoms. Using regression models, we assessed associations between mental health outcomes and gam
