BACKGROUND: After a child's death, parents may experience depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and increased risk for cancers, diabetes, psychiatric hospitalization, and suicide. Racial/ethnic differences are unknown. This longitudinal study investigated health and functioning of Hispanic, black, and white parents through 13 months after NICU/PICU death.
METHODS: Parents (176 mothers, 73 fathers) of 188 deceased infants/children were recruited from 4 NICUs, 4 PICUs, and state death certificates 2 to 3 weeks after death. Deaths occurred after limiting treatment/withdrawing life su…

OBJECTIVE: Considering coping as dynamic process within the family, effects of gender and diagnosis are investigated. Dissimilarity within couples in coping with childhood cancer is studied longitudinally in its effects on quality of life of mothers, fathers, and the sick children.
METHODS: A total of 108 parents out of 54 complete families participated in a prospective study. Twenty-five families had a child newly diagnosed with cancer, 29 families had a child newly diagnosed with juvenile diabetes or epilepsy. The Coping Health Inventory for Parents, the Trier Coping Scales, and the Ulm Qua…

STUDY QUESTION: What is the relationship between parent psychological adjustment, type of gamete donation (donor insemination, egg donation) and parents' disclosure of their use of donated gametes to their children.
SUMMARY ANSWER: Disclosure of donor origins to the child was not always associated with optimal levels of psychological adjustment, especially for fathers in donor insemination families.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Cross-sectional analyses have found mothers and fathers who conceived a child using donated sperm or eggs to be psychologically well-adjusted, with few differences emerging…

The transition to parenthood represents a vulnerable period for maternal mental health. Although current literature recognizes the benefit of paternity leave-taking on maternal mental health during the post-partum and family well-being, empirical evidence on its impact remains limited. The present study aimed to evaluate the association of fathers' paternal leave on maternal mental health outcomes, as mediated by co-parenting and parenting stress. A sample of 346 Italian mothers (Mage = 34.25; SD = 4.45) of infants aged 0-12 months (Childs' age in days M = 144.97; SD = 103.05) completed an onl…

Research on cognitive changes across the transition to parenthood has primarily focused on mothers and emphasized decline, whereas paternal cognition and its neuroendocrine correlates remain understudied. In this cross-sectional study, we compared cognitive performance in 158 mothers and fathers of infants aged 8 weeks to 6 months with 154 non-parent controls and examined associations with sex and plasma oxytocin and cortisol concentrations. Multidimensional structural equation models revealed no evidence for global cognitive impairment associated with parenthood. Instead, selective and sex-sp…

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment has a severe impact on both the health and parenting styles of abused individuals in adulthood, and it even has a negative impact on the offspring of abused individuals. Although studies have confirmed the intergenerational effects of childhood maltreatment, relatively few have emphasized emotional neglect and its mechanism of intergenerational effects. Additionally, few studies have examined the unique role of fathers and how mothers and fathers interact with one another.
OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to employ the actor-partner interdependence mediati…

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has negatively impacted the well-being of many college students, particularly lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ +) students who are already at a disproportionate risk for negative mental health and well-being outcomes. To identify potential risk and protective factors we examined LGBTQ + college students' disclosure of sexual orientation, gender identity, or both (SOGI) to mothers and fathers, living arrangements (whether or not students lived with mothers and fathers), social support from family and friends, and pare…

BACKGROUND: The Social Information Processing model (SIP; Milner, 1993, 2000, 2003) suggests that emotion dysregulation can be a moderating factor in Child Abuse Potential (CAP), influencing the processes of perception, interpretation and attribution of child's behavior.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate comprehensively emotion dysregulation in CAP and to examine gender differences between fathers and mother at risk.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants were 186 mothers and 110 fathers of Italian pupils, aged 6-14 years (M = 9.3; SD = 1.9).
METHODS: We analyzed emotion dysregulation…

The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a transgenerational transmission of violence within the family on a sample of parents of preschool children in Croatia, and to identify the factors that increase the likelihood of child abuse. The Child Abuse Questionnaire was self-administered to the sample of 118 parents of preschool children (91 mothers and 27 fathers) during February 2013. There were 7.7% of mothers and 3.8% of fathers who answered that they slapped their child, while 15.4% of the fathers answered that they even hit their child with a fist. We found the subjects who w…

OBJECTIVE: This study documents the strength of relations between key parent and child behaviors as they occur during typical encounters for both mothers and fathers and determines whether there were shifts in the strength of relations between parent and child behaviors during early and middle childhood.
DESIGN: Multivariate multi-level modeling was used to examine associations between three parent behaviors (respect for autonomy, stimulation of development, hostility) and two child behaviors (agency, negativity) as they occurred in typical parent-child activities at four time points from 54 …

OBJECTIVE: To study psychological distress in parents of child survivors of Severe Meningococcal Disease (SMD) after discharge of their child from the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
METHODS: This study approached parents of child survivors of SMD treated on the PICU between 1993-2001. Five cross-sectional groups were created for mothers and fathers separately. The five groups differed from each other by the period after discharge they entered the project (ranging from 3 months to 7 years after discharge). For research purposes, mothers and fathers (n = 192) individually completed the …

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with fragile X syndrome (FXS) experience elevated levels of parenting stress due to the challenges associated with raising a child with significant disabilities. Biological mothers of children with FXS are at an increased genetic risk for experiencing mental health challenges. Parental mental health challenges and stress are often associated with reduced marital cohesion and satisfaction, which may spill over and negatively affect the parent-child relationship for both mothers and fathers.
AIM: The current study examined relationships among characteristics of p…

BACKGROUND: Couplet Care, which allows mothers and newborns to receive treatment together, has gained prominence in neonatal and maternity care settings. This model supports early bonding, skin-to-skin contact, and breastfeeding, benefiting both preterm and sick newborns.
PURPOSE: The study aims to explore parents' experiences with Couplet Care after a caesarean section in an integrated neonatal and maternity unit, where both mother and newborn required treatment.
METHODS: A qualitative, semi-structured interview approach was employed. Eight mothers and 6 fathers participated, sharing their …

We aimed to identify parents' dental anxiety trajectories and the association of the trajectories with the number of parents' and their children's oral healthcare procedures in the FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study. Dental anxiety was measured with the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale at gestational weeks (gw) 14 and 34, as well as 3 and 24 months (mo) after childbirth. Oral healthcare procedures from gw14 to 24 mo were obtained from the national patient data register and categorized as preventive and treatment. Trajectories were identified with latent growth mixture modelling for 2068 fathers and 320…

This study uses data from 2,309 biological fathers who participated in the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study (FFCWS) to examine associations between psychosocial characteristics and levels of corporal punishment (CP) toward their 3-year-old children over the past month. Results indicate that 61% of the fathers reported no CP over the past month, 23% reported using CP once or twice, and 16% reported using CP a few times in the past month or more. In multivariate models controlling for important sociodemographic factors as well as characteristics of the child, fathers' parenting stress…
