We report an unusual case of uterine corpus metastasis from rectal adenocarcinoma detected using F-FDG PET/CT. A 47-year-old woman was diagnosed with rectal adenocarcinoma and treated with surgery and radiochemotherapy 3 years ago. During follow-up, she presented with lower abdomen pain and elevated tumor markers, but ultrasonography findings were unremarkable. We performed an F-FDG PET/CT scan, which showed intense F-FDG avidity in the myometrium of the uterine corpus. Uterine corpus metastasis was suspected, and complementary MRI and diagnostic curettage histopathology confirmed uterine meta

BACKGROUND: Sclerosing stromal tumors (SST) are rare, benign tumors classified as sex cord stromal tumors. To our knowledge, positron emission tomography with computed tomography (PET-CT) findings of SST have only been described in one report and imaging findings on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) have only been described in three reports. Characteristic imaging features of SST on PET-CT and DWI have not yet been identified. Here we report a case of multilocular SST with solid components showing mild FDG uptake and slight hyperintensity on DWI, and reviewed the literature.

After an overview of the principles of fludeoxyglucose-PET/computed tomography (CT) in breast cancer, its advantages and limits to evaluate treatment response are discussed. The metabolic information is helpful for early assessment of the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and could be used to monitor treatment, especially in aggressive breast cancer subtypes. PET/CT is also a powerful method for early assessment of the treatment response in the metastatic setting. It allows evaluation of different sites of metastases in a single examination and detection of a heterogeneous response. However

A 64-year-old woman with a history of weight loss and a markedly elevated serum carbohydrate antigen 19-9 level of 560 U/mL was referred for an F-FDG PET study to evaluate for occult malignancy. In addition to the weight loss, she had suffered from a chronic cough secondary to bronchiectasis and had been investigated for a suspected gastrointestinal malignancy. Multiple FDG-avid foci were detected throughout both lungs on FDG PET, corresponding to areas of bronchiectasis on CT with no obvious suspicious FDG-avid foci elsewhere. This supported an inflammatory process causing her elevated carboh

AIM: Suggested cutoff points of blood glucose levels (BGL) before F-FDG PET/CT scanning vary between 120 and 200 mg/dl in current guidelines. This study's purpose was to compare the frequency of abnormal fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) biodistribution on PET/CT scans of patients with various ranges of abnormal BGL and to determine the effect of BGL greater than 200 mg/dl on F-FDG uptake in various organs.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: F-FDG PET/CT scans were retrospectively reviewed for 325 patients with BGL greater than 120 mg/dl at the time of scan and 112 with BGL less than or equal to 120

We describe the F-FDG PET/CT findings in a rare case of mesenteric panniculitis caused by systemic lupus. A previous CT had raised suspicion of a space-occupying lesion in the left hypochondrium in a context of aspecific constitutional symptoms and inflammatory parameters. The diagnosis of panniculitis was confirmed at laparoscopic biopsy directed by the PET findings. Follow-up F-FDG PET/CT after 1 month of corticosteroid therapy showed complete disappearance of the abdominal hypermetabolic foci.

Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign gynaecological tumours. However, 0.13 to 6% of them have malignant potential (Robboy et al. Environ Health Perspect 108(Suppl 5):779-784, 2000). Uterine smooth muscle tumours with unusual growth patterns include a spectrum of lesions such as intravenous leiomyomatosis, benign metastasizing leiomyoma and disseminated peritoneal leiomyomatosis (Vaquero et al. J Minim Invasive Gynecol 16:263-268, 2009). Benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) is a very rare condition with around 100 cases reported to date. BML is a cytologically bland, mitotically inacti

A 66-year-old man with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes was admitted for acute bilateral calf pain in the context of coronary artery disease, chronic renal failure, and peripheral neuropathy. Lower-extremity Doppler ultrasound excluded deep vein thrombosis. FDG-PET was performed to exclude a suspected infection because of elevated white blood cells and inflammatory markers but normal creatinine kinase levels. PET scan demonstrated intense bilateral calf muscle and left thigh muscle uptake, which in combination with the patient's history was consistent with diabetic myonecrosis, a rare end-sta

The introduction of hybrid PET/MRI imaging using integrated systems into clinical practice has opened up the possibility of reducing the radiation dose from hybrid imaging by eliminating the contribution from computed tomography. Studies comparing the possibilities of PET/CT and PET/MRI imaging demonstrated it is possible to use the advantages of the high contrast resolution of magnetic resonance for soft tissue and bone marrow along with PET records in a quality comparable to PET/CT imaging. The significant feature for PET imaging in Hodgkińs lymphoma is that it is a tissue with high levels o

We report on a 71-year-old woman presenting with biochemical features indicating recurrent disease in long-term follow-up of left-sided parathyroid carcinoma. She had undergone several surgical procedures including total thyroidectomy, partial resection of the esophageal wall, and curative neck radiation 12 years previously. PET/CT using F-fluorocholine revealed high uptake in local relapse in the lower neck, comparable to F-FDG, whereas only faint uptake was observed with F-fluoroethyl tyrosine. As shown in this case, imaging with FDG and F-fluorocholine is feasible in (recurrent) parathyroid

An 8-year-old girl presented with back and leg pain and left arm and leg paresis. Lumbar puncture was suggestive of lymphocytic meningitis without identified organism. A second lumbar puncture demonstrated a large number of lymphoid B cells, with positive immunohistochemical staining for CD20 and CD25, proving the diagnosis of neurolymphomatosis. Brain and spine MRI demonstrated involvement of cervical and lumbosacral nerve roots. FDG PET/CT showed multiple bone metastases in addition to nerve involvement. Postchemotherapy FDG PET/CT demonstrated complete metabolic response.

In the diagnosis and staging of oncologic patients, [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is well recognized as an important functional imaging modality. FDG-PET also has been used for cancer screening in healthy individuals. In general, the normal thyroid gland shows absent or low uptake on FDG-PET, which is often identified as an incidental finding on PET. Today, thyroid FDG uptake can be seen in three patterns: diffuse; focal; and diffuse-plus-focal. Diffuse thyroid uptake is mainly considered an indicator of chronic thyroiditis. Focal thyroid uptake has been assoc

A 66-year-old man presented to our hospital because of abdominal pain for 5 days. A contrast abdominal CT raised the possibility of pancreatic carcinoma. FDG PET/CT showed increased FDG accumulation not only in the pancreas and the retroperitoneum, but also in the posterior mediastinum, which was not typical of pancreatic carcinoma. The patient was subsequently diagnosed having immunoglobulin G4-related disease following the histopathologic examination.

Budd-Chiari syndrome is a rare clinical condition that involves diminution or interruption of hepatic venous blood flow from the liver. We describe a case of Budd-Chiari syndrome visualized via F-FDG PET/CT in a 60-year-old woman with medical history of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma who presented with abdominal pain. FDG PET/CT fusion images demonstrate increased FDG uptake with SUVmax of 2.2 along the course of the middle hepatic vein with decreased attenuation within both the middle and right hepatic veins, consistent with thrombus.

BACKGROUND: Current [F-18]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) procedures in tumor-bearing mice typically includes fasting, anesthesia, and standardized uptake value (SUV)-based quantification. Such procedures may be inappropriate for prolonged multiscan experiments. We hypothesize that normalization of tumor FDG retention relative to a suitable reference tissue may improve accuracy as this method may be less susceptible to uncontrollable day-to-day changes in blood glucose levels, physical activity, or unnoticed imperfect tail vein injections.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fed
