BACKGROUND: Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a rare, chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by sterile pustules on palmar or plantar areas. Data on PPP are scarce.
AIM: To investigate the clinical characteristics and risk factors for disease severity in a large cohort of Turkish patients with PPP.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, multicentre study of patients with PPP recruited from 21 tertiary centres across Turkey.
RESULTS: In total, 263 patients (165 women, 98 men) were evaluated. Most patients (75.6%) were former or current smokers. The mean Palmoplantar Pustulosis Are

Capecitabine is a prodrug used primarily as a chemotherapeutic agent. Despite its good tolerance, it has several adverse effects, including the appearance of eruptive nevi. We present the case of a patient, with a history of EC IV breast adenocarcinoma and superficial extension melanoma, which developed 2 weeks after the start of therapy with capecitabine multiple eruptive palmoplantar pigmented lesions, with diverse benign dermatoscopic patterns. With the increasing incidence of solid tumors, these agents are being more used. It is important that the treating physician knows its adverse effec

We report a case of palmoplantar lichen planus in a 7-year-old Japanese girl with congenital deafness, who presented with erythematous eruptions and hyperkeratosis, with peeling and fissures on her soles, palms and digits. On histological examination of a skin biopsy from the lesion on her wrist, lichen planus was identified. Using computed tomography of the inner ears, bilateral cochlear dysplasia was found. The patient's DNA was sequenced; no sequence variants were detected in the GJB2 gene encoding connexin-26, but she had a missense mutation in SLC26A4 (solute carrier family 26, member 4).

BACKGROUND: As far as we have sought for in Medline and PubMed, not one study until now has evaluated the prevalence of onychomycosis in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). As there are great evidence of immunological disturbances linked to IBD, a possible relationship of this nail infection in association with those diseases and the possible risk factors might be relevant in IBD patients.
METHODS: A case-control prospective study using combined direct smear and cultures for fungus was performed. Sociodemographics, clinical and laboratorial data were recorded at baseline and sampl

BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis is an important public health problem because of the increase in immunosuppressive states. Large-scale studies in India are scarce, and so the baseline incidence of onychomycosis is not firmly established.
METHODS: Three hundred and two clinically suspected cases of onychomycosis were included in this study. Nail samples were collected for direct microscopic examination and culture. Clinical patterns and associated relevant factors were noted according to a predetermined protocol.
RESULTS: The associated predisposing conditions included diabetes mellitus (3.9%) and

We present a case with dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency that manifested a variant of hand-foot syndrome (HFS). A 52-year-old man received capecitabine for adjuvant treatment of rectal cancer. On the ninth day of the first cycle, he presented to the clinic with a rash on the dorsum of both hands accompanied by symptoms of pain, erythema, swelling, and desquamation consistent with grade 3 HFS. The palms of his hands and soles of his feet were only tender with no apparent rash or discoloration. Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase activity was evaluated by radio assay using peripheral

We report a case of anti-Jo-1 syndrome (a rare autoimmune condition that may manifest with various forms of interstitial lung disease), which in our case presented unusually with multiple pulmonary nodules, mimicking carcinoma. She subsequently developed pleural and pericardial effusions (which are rare in this syndrome), myopathy, and "mechanic's hand," with similar lesions on the feet. "Mechanic's foot" noted in this patient has not been previously described. She initially responded well to immunosuppression but has subsequently progressed to pulmonary fibrosis.

Selecting an appropriate antimycotic targeting the pathogens are among the most important factors for successfully treating onychomycosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the pathogens of onychomycosis in southern Taiwan and analyse the association between various factors and the distribution of pathogens. A total of 375 patients with onychomycosis were enrolled. Histopathological examination and fungus culture of nail specimens were performed. The pathogens were dermatophytes in 227 patients (60.5%), Candida in 118 (31.5%) and moulds in 30 (8%). Compared to patients with toenail invo

Acrodermatitis continua suppurativa of Hallopeau (ACS) is a rare pustular variant of psoriasis in which numerous treatment modalities have been used without any consistent long-term effect. We report for the first time two patients with ACS which was successfully treated with topical tacrolimus 0.1% ointment. Our observations raise hopes that this new treatment strategy for ACS may constitute a novel effective therapeutic option for this recalcitrant condition.

A 63-year-old woman presented simultaneously with two rare forms of bullous pemphigoid. Initially she had a dyshidrotic palmoplantar eczema. Repeated epicutaneous patch tests ruled out a type IV allergic reaction to common allergens. Six months later the patient developed disseminated pruritic nodules. After 4.5 years she then demonstrated scattered bullae within erythematous plaques indicative of bullous pemphigoid. A skin biopsy showed linear IgG and IgM as well as C3 deposits at the dermo-epidermal junction and circulating autoantibodies against the basement membrane could be found in serum

BACKGROUND: Type VII collagen gene (COL7A1) mutations are the cause of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB), but most mutations are specific to individual families, and there are limited data on the nature of COL7A1 mutations in certain ethnic populations.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the molecular basis of DEB in Hispanic Mexican patients.
METHODS: Patients were recruited through a newly established support group, Fundacion DEBRA Mexico. Molecular analysis was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of genomic DNA using COL7A1-specific primers, heteroduplex analysis, and direct nucleotide

PUVA-bath therapy has proven to avoid many side effects associated with oral 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) treatment. In order to investigate the effectiveness of topical PUVA-bath therapy (PUVA-soak therapy) on chronic palmoplantar dermatoses, 30 patients with plaque-type psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, endogenous eczema, dyshidrotic eczema and hyperkeratotic dermatitis of the palms and soles were treated over 8 weeks with PUVA-soak using 8-MOP. No additional treatment except skin moisturising cream such as unguentum emulsificans aquosum was used during the study period. The single UVA-doses appli

Tinea unguium is a common, chronic fungal infection of the nails. Many epidemiological studies have looked at the frequency with which this condition is seen in hospital outpatients clinics or mycological laboratories along with other dermatomycoses. Only recently have studies begun to emerge looking at the prevalence of this condition in populations. Hospital and mycological laboratory-based studies give valuable information about tinea unguium prevalence in a particular clinic, but cannot be compared with other studies due to confounding factors inherent in the different people attending ind
