BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to present rare sinus syndromes known as silent sinus syndrome (SSS) and frontal sinus syndrome with excessive pneumatization and bone defects in the wall (pneumocele). The available literature describing pneumocele cases was reviewed.
METHODOLOGY: PubMed and Science Direct databases were searched by two independent reviewers. The primary outcome was finding descriptions of the sinus pneumocele. In the end, papers on frontal sinus pneumocele that was not the result of trauma, congenital defects or comorbidities were selected. Moreover, the authors presente

Bone distraction of the superior and medial thirds of the craniofacial skeleton en bloc, avoiding a frontal craniectomy is presented. We applied this procedure in eight patients who were more than 5 years old with different types of craniofacial synostosis and who had not received previous treatment, and with a normal frontal shape. During monobloc advancement, major complications were encountered in older patients, especially the impossibility of the brain to expand rapidly to fill the retrofrontal dead space. Distraction osteogenesis of the craniofacial skeleton en bloc (without craniectomy)

The use of a screw in the frontal bone to provide a fixed point for internal suspension is described. This technique has advantages over other forms of internal suspension and is particularly useful in cases of severe trauma, where the more conventional fixed points may not be available.

We report an unexpected case of the spontaneous development of extensive pneumocephalus secondary to a frontal sinus defect in an adolescent with X-linked hydrocephalus and a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt. The frontal sinus defect is likely to have developed due to the pressure effects of longstanding raised intracranial pressure. The patient had undergone an emergency shunt revision surgery 3 months prior to developing pneumocephalus. On further exploration, there was a history of a left-sided nasal cerebrospinal fluid leak for many months, suggestive of raised intracranial pressure contrib

BACKGROUND: Teratocarcinosarcoma (TCS) is a rare malignant neoplasm with epithelial and mesenchymal components such as fibroblasts, cartilage, bone and smooth muscle. With less than 100 total reported cases, this malignant neoplasm is rarely encountered by neurosurgeons because it primarily involves the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 55-year-old male with chronic frontal headaches was found to have a frontal mass with involvement of nasal sinus and right ethmoid sinus. The patient underwent preoperative embolization of tumor followed by bilateral frontal craniotomy fo

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of cerebrospinal fluid fistulas of the frontal sinus after anterior skull base surgery is not rare. The extracerebral techniques to repair cerebrospinal fluid fistulas are often used, especially because they avoid open-air surgical operations.
METHODS: A percutaneous CT-guided technique to close postsurgical cerebrospinal fluid fistulas of the frontal sinus in three patients after anterior skull base surgery is presented in this report. Ten millimeters of human fibrin glue was injected into the frontal sinus through one of the burr holes of the bone flap by an 18-ga

The majority of frontal sinus fractures are sustained by young male adults involved in vehicle accidents. Treatment of these fractures is of paramount importance because of the anatomical relationship of the sinus with the brain and the delicate periorbital region. The optimal treatment of frontal sinus fractures remains controversial. However, most authors would accept an open exploration and obliteration of the sinus in the presence of a depressed or displaced anterior wall fracture or injury to the nasofrontal duct. A successful obliteration requires meticulous extirpation of the frontal si

Chronic frontal sinusitis in 12 dairy cattle most often was associated with a history of dehorning, in which the sinus was entered (67%), or with respiratory tract disease (25%). The most common organisms isolated were Actinomyces pyogenes and Pasteurella multocida. Signs of infection did not develop for months in some cattle and were often intermittent. The most common clinical signs included anorexia, lethargy, fever, frontal bone distortion, exophthalmos, abnormal posture, nasal discharge, and neurologic abnormalities. Treatment consisted of trephination at 2 sites, drainage and lavage of t…

The dilemma of the management of a severely fractured frontal sinus when portions of the walls are missing presents a number of therapeutic options. The safety of placing a fat graft in such a sinus for obliteration when the graft will be required to obtain its nourishment from the scant vessels contained within the subcutaneous tissue or dura, or worse still, from a dural or bone graft is questioned. Clinical experience has suggested that such a procedure may not be safe. An experiment was performed in nine cats in which all of either the anterior or posterior frontal sinus wall was removed i

The authors present a classification of trauma to the cranial base, based on observation in 80 cases. There are five types. Type I : involves only the anterior wall of the frontal sinus. Type II : involves the face (craniofacial disjunction of the Lefort II type or crush face) and extend upward to the cranial base and, in occurency, to the anterior wall of the frontal sinus, because of the facial retrusion. Type III : ivolves frontal part of the skull and extend down to the cranial base. Type IV : is a combination of types II and III. Type V : involves only ethmoidal or sphenoidal bones. Cereb

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that autologous iliac bone grafts do not enhance clinical results and do not decrease complication rates in patients undergoing medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy.
METHODS: Forty patients allocated in a randomized, two-armed, double-blinded clinical trial were evaluated between 2007 and 2010. One group received bone graft, and the other group was left without filling the osteotomy defect. The primary outcome was the Knee Society Score. Radiographic measurement of the frontal anatomical femoral-tibial angle and the progression of osteoarthritis accord

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a clinical syndrome characterized by progressive decline in social conduct and a focal pattern of frontal and temporal lobe damage. Its biological basis is still poorly understood but the focality of the brain degeneration provides a powerful model to study the cognitive and anatomical basis of social cognition. Here, we present Dr. A, a patient with a rare hereditary bone disease (hereditary multiple exostoses) and FTD (pathologically characterized as Pick's disease), who presented with a profound behavioral disturbance characterized by acquired sociopathy. We

BACKGROUND: Frontal sinus (FS) perforation is a common complication in frontal craniotomy. The primary goal of treatment is to seal the FS without destroying physiological function.
OBJECTIVE: This article describes a new FS cavity reconstruction technique using medical aural and encephalic glue (EC glue)-soaked gelfoam.
METHODS: Between 2007 and 2012, 118 patients underwent FS reconstruction using EC glue-soaked gelfoam. The FS cavity was reconstructed in all patients and no patient experienced intracranial infection, frontal sinusitis, or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage.
RESULTS: Restor

UNLABELLED: The frontal sinus trauma is not rare and it is 8% of the facial fractures. It can affect the anterior and/or posterior plates, with or without hitting the nasofrontal duct. It has a large potential of complications and its management still being a controversy.
OBJECTIVE: To present the casuistic of fractures frontal sinus, the epidemiology and clinical and surgical management of frontal sinus fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Not randomized retrospective study of 24 patients with frontal sinus fractures Hospital of Clinics, School of Medicine Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil.
