Ovarian hormones are pivotal for the physiological maintenance of the brain function as well as its response to environmental stimuli. There is mounting evidence attesting the relevance of endogenous ovarian hormones as well as exogenous estradiol and progesterone for emotional and cognitive processing. The present review systematically summarized current knowledge on sex steroid hormonal modulation of neural substrates of emotion and cognition revealed by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Twenty-four studies of healthy naturally cycling and combined oral contraceptives (COC) user

Research on mechanisms of behavior change provides an innovative method to improve treatment for addictive behaviors. An important extension of mechanisms of change research involves the use of translational approaches, which examine how basic biological (i.e., brain-based mechanisms) and behavioral factors interact in initiating and sustaining positive behavior change as a result of psychotherapy. Articles in this special issue include integrative conceptual reviews and innovative empirical research on brain-based mechanisms that may underlie risk for addictive behaviors and response to psych

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic and highly disabling mood disorder, associated with the highest suicide rate among psychiatric disorders. Even though neurobiological bases of BD have still to be further elucidated, recent neuroimaging studies provided compelling evidence about functional correlates of cognitive deficits in BD patients, with working memory (WM) impairment being one of the most commonly reported findings. Such dysfunctions are likely to persist beyond acute phases of the illness, so they qualify as endophenotypic markers for the disorder. This review sought to synthesize, thr

Post-resuscitation care has changed in the last decade, and outcome after cardiac arrest has improved, thanks to several combined measures. Induced hypothermia has shown a treatment benefit in two randomized trials, but some doubts remain. General care has improved, including the use of emergency coronary intervention. Assessment of neurological function and prognosis in comatose cardiac arrest patient is challenging, especially when treated with hypothermia. In this review, we evaluate the recent literature and discuss the available evidence for prognostication after cardiac arrest in the era

The question we address here is whether the invasive presurgical brain mapping approaches of direct cortical stimulation and of the Wada procedure can be replaced by noninvasive functional neuroimaging methods (functional magnetic resonance imaging [fMRI], magnetoencephalography [MEG], transcranial magnetic stimulation and [TMS]). First, we outline the reasons for contemplating such a replacement. Second, we present evidence to the effect that the efficacy of the invasive and noninvasive methods, while suboptimal, is comparable. Third, we discuss additional advantages of noninvasive presurgica…

Background: The combination of structural and functional analyses is a biologically valid approach that offers methodological advantages in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) neuroimaging science. The paucity of studies combining these methods constitutes an important knowledge gap. In this study, we investigate structural abnormalities and their associated functional differences in a developmentally homogeneous ASD cohort. Methods: Whole-brain voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analyses were performed on 28 ASD participants and 38 age-matched typically developing healthy controls (HC) to derive gray m

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may increase the risk of various types of dementia. Despite the large number of studies linking these critical conditions, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The past decade has witnessed an exponential increase in interest on brain imaging research to assess the neuroanatomical underpinnings of PTSD. This systematic review provides a critical assessment of available evidence of neuroimaging correlates linking PTSD to a higher risk of dementia.
METHODS: The EMBASE, PubMed/MEDLINE, and SCOPUS electroni

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental health condition characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors. Traditional diagnostic methods rely on subjective clinical assessments, delaying effective intervention. This review examines how advanced neuroimaging techniques, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), integrated with machine learning (ML), can improve OCD diagnostics by identifying structural and functional brain abnormalities, particularly in the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuit.

Ketamine is a NMDA receptor antagonist that has a rapid acting antidepressant effect with high efficacy in treatment-resistant patients. Ketamine is a beneficial antidepressant for many individuals with depression, but not all of the patients respond, and some even exhibit symptom deterioration. The discovery of repeatable and mechanistically relevant biomarkers would address a major gap in treatment response prediction. Numerous potential peripheral biomarkers have been reported, but their current utility is unclear. We conducted an umbrella review to evaluate the biomarkers of ketamine's ant

Neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury involves plastic changes along the whole neuroaxis. Current neuroimaging studies have identified grey matter volume (GMV) and resting-state functional connectivity changes of pain processing regions related to neuropathic pain intensity in spinal cord injury subjects. However, the relationship between the underlying neural processes and pain extent, a complementary characteristic of neuropathic pain, is unknown. We therefore aimed to reveal the neural markers of widespread neuropathic pain in spinal cord injury subjects and hypothesized that those

Identifying markers able to characterise the progression of Huntington's Disease (HD) is of great importance to the HD research community, as such markers may provide valuable outcome measures in future clinical trials. Neuroimaging measures are obvious candidates because of their clear relevance to the neuropathology of the disease. Many also show improved precision and sensitivity compared with standard functional scales. This review summarizes findings from the wealth of longitudinal imaging studies in the literature, focusing on the most widely available imaging modalities: structural MRI

BVR was 77 years old when he sustained a large posterior cerebral artery territory infarct. Medical, cognitive and functional data collected on four occasions over 10 years initially revealed circumscribed neurological signs, no functional or cognitive deficits. BVR became significantly impaired only after two other strokes, 3 years before death. On brain MRI, the lesions involved large portions of the right occipital and temporal cortices, the right thalamus, and the left cerebellum, as well as thinning of the corpus callosum. Postmortem investigations revealed additional recent vascular lesi

Background and Objectives: Functional decline is a major determinant of disability, caregiver burden, and loss of independence in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). Although bvFTD is characterized by early and rapidly progressive deterioration in everyday functioning, the multimodal contributors associated with longitudinal functional change remain insufficiently understood. The present study aimed to identify the strongest cognitive, behavioral, personality, and neuroimaging correlates of longitudinal functional deterioration in bvFTD using an integrated multimodal framework

Research demonstrating responsiveness of the neural reward network to face trustworthiness has not assessed whether the effects are mediated by dopaminergic function. We filled this gap in the literature by investigating whether dietary dopamine depletion would blunt the sensitivity of neural activation to faces varying in trustworthiness across reward regions as well as the sensitivity of behavioral responses to those faces. As prolactin release is negatively regulated by dopamine, peripheral prolactin levels confirmed the efficacy of our manipulation. The dopamine depletion manipulation mode

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) enters the brain early after infecting humans and may remain in the central nervous system despite successful antiretroviral treatment. Many neuroimaging techniques were used to study HIV+ patients with or without opportunistic infections. These techniques assessed abnormalities in brain structures (using computed tomography, structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion MRI) and function (using functional MRI at rest or during a task, and perfusion MRI with or without a contrast agent). In addition, single-photon emission computed tomography with va

Structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides anatomical information about the brain in healthy as well as in diseased conditions. On the other hand, functional MRI (fMRI) provides information on the brain activity during performance of a specific task. Analysis of fMRI data requires the registration of the data to a reference brain template in order to identify the activated brain regions. Brain templates also find application in other neuroimaging modalities, such as diffusion tensor imaging and multi-voxel spectroscopy. Further, there are certain differences (e.g., brain shape and si
