OBJECTIVES: Nearly half of patients with slow transit constipation (STC) are not completely satisfied with their traditional remedies. We aimed to evaluate the therapeutic value and possible involved mechanism of transcutaneous electrical acustimulation (TEA) at ST36 in patients with STC.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy patients with STC were randomly divided into TEA (n = 35) and sham-TEA (n = 35) to undergo a two-week treatment with TEA at ST36 or sham point. After the two-week treatment, 18 patients from each group randomly underwent a few physiological tests, including the electrocardiogra

PURPOSE: In our institution, patients with intractable slow transit constipation (STC) have undergone single-incision clipless laparoscopic total colectomy (SCLTC) with ileorectal anastomosis (IRA) since 2011. We aimed to examine the feasibility and usefulness of SCLTC with IRA for patients with intractable STC.
METHODS: From January 2011 to December 2018, twenty-two patients with intractable STC underwent SCLTC with IRA at Kashiwa Hospital, Jikei University, by a single surgeon, were retrospectively registered in this study. They consisted of the first 12 consecutive patients undergoing the

Functional constipation (FC) is one of the most frequently encountered gastrointestinal conditions in practice.1 Practice guidelines universally recommend that patients with typical constipation symptoms and no alarm features be treated empirically with dietary/lifestyle interventions and laxative therapy.2,3 Unfortunately, by the time a patient reaches a gastroenterologist, these treatments frequently have already been tried. Anorectal function testing (anorectal manometry [ARM] and balloon expulsion test [BET]) is the next best step in management guidelines in this all-too-common scenario, b

Few patients with slow-transit constipation refractory to conservative treatment can benefit with a subtotal colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis with the preservation of the superior rectal artery. In this letter to the editor some important issues were discussed. First, the study did not include a comparison group. Second, they did not present the functional results in the short or long term related to the bowel function of these patients after surgery. Finally, the authors showed that this surgical procedure was safe, and no cases of leakage were found.

Increasing rumen-undegraded protein is one challenge of ruminant nutrition to both meet protein requirements of animals and reduce nitrogen excretion in the environment by increasing nitrogen efficiency. Industrial processes using heat or tanning to reduce rumen protein degradation have certain limitations, such as difficulty in balancing low ruminal degradation and high intestinal digestibility. Reducing the mean retention time (MRT) in the rumen by varying the size and density of particles may be another promising way to increase the rumen-undegraded protein proportion of concentrate feeds a

RATIONALE: Slow transit constipation (STC) is a common disease of which the etiology is still not clear. Multiple hypotheses have been proposed to explain STC, including autonomic neuropathy, disorders of the enteric nervous system and so forth. Morphological abnormalities of the enteric nerves of the colon in patients with STC have been extensively reported, while there have been no morphological reports focusing on extrinsic extramural fibers from the pelvic plexus to the distal colon (i.e., pelvic parasympathetic colonic nerve) in patients with STC.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Whether morphological

INTRODUCTION: Constipation is a frequent non-motor feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). It is the most common gastrointestinal symptom of the disease and it can precede motor symptoms by as much as 20 years. Constipation can produce discomfort and affect activities of daily living, productivity and quality of life, thus warranting early diagnosis and treatment.
AREAS COVERED: In this review, the safety and efficacy of traditional and novel strategies for constipation management will be discussed. A treatment algorithm for constipation in PD will be presented.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown accelerated gastric emptying after sleeve gastrectomy. This study aimed to determine whether a correlation exists between immediate postoperative gastroduodenal transit time and weight loss after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Specifically, correlation tests were conducted to determine whether more rapid transit after LSG correlated with increased weight loss.
METHODS: Data were collected from an institutional review board-approved electronic registry. All LSGs were performed over a 40-Fr bougie, starting 5 to 7 cm proximal to the pylorus. Gastr

BACKGROUND: Constipation is often associated with some clinical signs as hard stool, incomplete defecation, chronic straining, and abdominal pain and long stays in bathroom. Some diagnostic uncertainties came from functional and structural variations of the anorectum and the assessment from few imaging procedures, which were thought as the best but could not always give the expected result. Then physiologic tests were required to be used. The aim was to study which physiologic test correlated to the clinical symptoms, was valuable and have to be performed in the patients with chronic constipat

Oesophageal manometry has been considered the "gold standard" test for the evaluation of oesophageal motility. Oesophageal manometry allows physicians to assess peristalsis by using informations about the shape, amplitude and duration of the oesophageal contraction, but it does not offer direct information about bolus transit through the oesophagus. Recent studies demonstrate that combined impedance-manometry provides important additional information about oesophageal motility as compared to conventional manometry such as: (1) monitoring of bolus transport patterns without the use of radiation

BACKGROUND: Secondary peristalsis is important for the clearance of retained refluxate or material from the oesophagus. Combined impedance and manometry can directly detect both oesophageal contraction and bolus transit.
AIM: To apply combined impedance and manometry to characterize oesophageal bolus transit and clearance by secondary peristalsis in healthy individuals.
METHODS: Eleven healthy volunteers underwent combined impedance and manometry with a catheter containing seven impedance-measuring segments and eight water-perfusion pressure transducers. Saline and solid agar boluses of 5 ml

OBJECTIVE: to study the feasibility of the transverse segment colic reversion and to evaluate its impact on the intestinal transit time in the rat Wistar.
METHOD: On a test group of the rats Wistar males anaesthetized, we isolated a segment from the transverse colon vascularized by a feeder pedicle. This segment colic was reversed and anastomosed into antiperistaltic out of termino-terminal on its site with polyglactine 6/0. Into post-operative, we studied, the weight, the volume of the ingestats, the intestinal transit time, the survival and the histological lesions of the reversed segment c

We have recently developed a simple method to investigate the colonic response to food (CRF). This study describes the modifications of CRF induced by treatment with oral pinaverium bromide in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. Thirty healthy subjects and 43 patients suffering from IBS were studied. Colonic transit time (CTT) was measured in fasting conditions and after eating a standard test meal. Colonic response to food was quantified by calculating the variation in number of markers in each zone of interest of the large bowel between the X-ray films of the abdomen taken before and af

PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to assess results of surgical repair of rectocele and to identify possible determinants of outcome from patient's history and preoperative defecography. Another aim was to evaluate how surgery affects rectal evacuation.
METHOD: Thirty-four women with constipation and rectal emptying difficulties underwent surgery with a transanal technique. A preoperative defecography was performed in each patient. They were followed up after a median of 10 (range, 2-60) months with a questionnaire (n = 34) and a defecography (n = 31). Computer-based image analysis of defeco

Diagnostic imaging modalities play a key role in the definition of the possible causes of constipation. Barium Enema (BE), Defecography (DG), Intestinal Transit Time (ITT), Computed Axial Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MR) are necessary diagnostic tools for the identification either of the possible organic causes of the disease or of the functional disorders. The ITT evaluation is the main investigation to look for functional colic constipation; this method is in fact able to distinguish between the hypertonic type (in which the fecal progression is slowed down to such an extent that

The lactulose hydrogen breath-test provides a non-invasive measure of mouth to caecum transit-time. Its use, particularly in children has not been thoroughly investigated. We have studied the effects on transit time of altering the lactulose concentration of the test solution, and of administering it in a liquid nutrient preparation. Concentration markedly affected transit-time; studies with an isotonic solution may be least affected by delayed gastric emptying, and so may reflect small bowel transit-time. Day-to-day variation was large, and was not reduced by altering lactulose concentration,

A consecutive series of 58 patients with idiopathic constipation and 20 control subjects were studied by evacuation proctography and measurements were made of changes during rectal expulsion. A wide range was found in the control group. The anorectal angle, pelvic floor descent, and the presence or size of an anterior rectocele did not discriminate between the control and patient groups. Internal intussusception was rare. Among constipated patients, the only significant differences from normal were in the time taken to expel barium and the amount of barium remaining in the distal rectum. The m

OBJECTIVE: Abnormalities in the gut microbiota and intestinal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels are implicated in the pathogenesis of functional constipation (FC). Electro-acupuncture (EA) has been shown to improve constipation-related symptoms and rebalance the gut microbiota. However, it is currently unknown whether the gut microbiota is a key mechanistic target for EA or how EA promotes gut motility by regulating the gut microbiota and SCFAs. Therefore, we assessed the effects of EA in FC mice and pseudo-germfree (PGF) mice to address these questions.
METHODS: Forty female Kunming mice

The aim of the research was to evaluate the influence of antagonists of specific beta-adrenergic receptor subtypes on bowel motility following abdominal surgery in rat model of postoperative ileus. Bowel motility was measured by the intestinal transit of Evans blue introduced via orogastric tube after surgical procedures of skin incision, laparotomy and laparotomy with gut manipulation. Male rats were given individual adrenergic receptor subtypes antagonists intraperitoneally, and the influence of administered agents on intestinal transit of Evans blue was then evaluated. No statistically sign
