Clinical symptoms and DNA repair characteristics of xeroderma pigmentosum patients from Germany.

Sixty-one xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) patients living in the Federal Republic of Germany were investigated. Clinical symptoms were correlated with DNA repair parameters measured in fibroblasts grown from skin biopsies. Classification according to the international complementation groups revealed that of the 61 patients 3 belonged to group A, 26 to group C, 16 to group D, 3 to group E, and 2 to group F; 11 were of the XP variant type. A striking clinical aspect was the frequency of histogenetically different skin tumors varying from one XP complementation group to the other: squamous and basal c…

[Complications after preventive mumps vaccination in West Germany (including multiple preventive vaccinations)].

Since the introduction of mumps vaccination in the Federal Republic of Germany 34 untoward vaccinal reactions were collected. In 2 cases of aseptic meningitis after mumps immunisation mumps virus was isolated from the CSF. The final investigation showed mumps virus (wild type) in one case; in the other a mumps vaccine-like strain (Jeryl-Lynn) was identified. Both patients recovered completely. These complications do not outweigh the enormous benefits of mumps immunisation.

Increased performance in tutoring systems during COVID-19 in Uruguay and Germany.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19-related school closures globally disrupted students' education and were followed by declines in academic performance in many contexts. At the same time, some studies reported performance increases within adaptive learning software during school closures. Yet, this evidence stems from a limited range of countries (e.g., Germany), leaving unclear whether these findings extend to other parts of the world. AIM: We sought to evaluate whether performance trajectories within intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) for learning mathematics during COVID-19-related school closures were…

Adult psychiatrists' views on clozapine prescribing for schizophrenia in Germany-an online survey.

BACKGROUND: Clozapine remains the only effective antipsychotic drug for treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), yet it continues to be markedly underused in most industrialized countries including Germany. Previous studies have identified prescriber-related factors such as concerns about adverse drug reactions, the burden of mandatory monitoring, and limited experience with clozapine use and TRS recognition as major contributors to this persistent underutilization. However, these issues have not been studied for the German healthcare system. OBJECTIVES: To investigate prescriber attitudes to…

Social inequalities in return-to-work among colorectal cancer survivors in Germany.

BACKGROUND: For working-age patients with colorectal cancer, returning to work is a key rehabilitation goal. This study examines the associa … ployed 2 years after medical rehabilitation. However, despite universal access to rehabilitation in Germany, strong social inequalities in RTW were observed. Monthly employment and pension data allowed reliable estimates, preventing selective non-response and recall bias. However, the results might not generalise to those who do not undergo rehabilitation …

Assessing climate change preparedness in hospitals and nursing homes in Hesse, Germany.

INTRODUCTION: Vulnerable groups are particularly affected by climate change. The healthcare sector is responsible for approximately 6% of the greenhouse gas emissions in Germany. It remains unclear to what extent hospitals and nursing homes in Germany have already implemented climate mitigation and adaptation measures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in the predominantly rural Marburg-Fulda region of Hesse, Germany, which has a population of 2,028,359. A total of 91 of the 300 nursing homes (30%) and seven of the 32 hospitals (22%) from this region participated in a semi-standa…

Drug supply shortages and their consequences for the medical profession: a survey in Germany and Austria.

Drug supply shortages are increasingly becoming a critical topic in the treatment of patients. Not only the reasons for the supply shortages are important but also their consequences for the medical profession. Firstly, this paper identifies which drug shortages have particularly affected medical doctors. Secondly, the additional time required for medical doctors due to supply shortages is analysed. A survey was conducted with 895 physicians from Germany and Austria using a purposive sampling method. The survey targets the supply shortages and its consequences for the medical profession of 20 …

Education outside the classroom in Germany: An interdisciplinary multi-methods Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Schools are a central place in the lives of both children and teachers, with the potential to counteract current challenges such as a physical and emotional disconnection from nature, insufficient physical activity, and increased social isolation. Concepts like Education Outside the Classroom (EOtC) offer a variety of approaches and are already established in the curriculum in other countries, while in Germany EOtC is still in the early stages of implementation. Previous studies have focused on the effects of EOtC on students, with little attention paid to teachers, environmental p…

Sleepless in Germany: psychometric validation of a German version of the Bedtime Procrastination Scale.

INTRODUCTION: Bedtime procrastination refers to delaying bedtime despite the absence of external constraints and awareness of potential negative consequences. It is linked to impaired sleep, reduced well-being, and self-regulatory difficulties. Although the Bedtime Procrastination Scale (BPS) is most widely used, no validated German version is available. This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and evaluate the psychometric properties of the German Bedtime Procrastination Scale (BPS-G). METHODS: A sample of 548 German-speaking adults completed the BPS-G and measures of procrastination
