Transcription of HERV-K/HTDV proviruses in various morphological forms of GCTs and in normal testicular parenchyma and placenta was studied by RT-PCR with specific primers discriminating type 1 proviruses from type 2 ones. The results indicate that transcription of type 2 HERV-K/HTDV proviruses takes place and mRNA of protein cORF, coded for only by type 2 proviruses, is synthesized in all malignant germinogenic tumors. In normal testicular tissue and placenta type 1 HERV-K/HTDV proviruses are expressed. No expression of HERV-K/HTDV proviruses was detected in nongerminogenic testicular tumors.

Extragonadal germ cell tumors (EGCT) are a rare group of neoplasms histologically identical to testicular counterparts. Fourteen cases of primary mediastinal and retroperitoneal germ cell tumors were treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy between 1987 and 1999 in Ankara Oncology Hospital. There were 9 (64%) complete remissions (CR),one (7%) partial remission (PR) and 2 (14%) stable diseases (SD). The remaining 2 patients were lost due to dissemination of disease. A primary intracranial germ cell tumor in a 16-year-old boy secreted both alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). The tumor, located in the right thalamus, contained germinomatous, trophoblastic, and endodermal sinus components. To identify AFP- and HCG-secreting cells, germ cells from the surgical specimen were cultured in vitro. OBJECTIVE: to determine the contribution of percutaneous core cutting needle biopsy (PCNB) in the diagnosis of mediastinal tumors.
DESIGN: retrospective review of 70 patients with mediastinal lesions who underwent CT-guided PCNB between 1988 and 1996.
RESULTS: PCNB provided adequate material in 62/70 cases, giving a total sample rate of 88.6%. Of these 62 patients, 57 were diagnosed correctly by PCNB whereas 5/62 were misdiagnosed as nonspecific inflammation, providing an overall sensitivity of 91.9%. The aim of this study was to determine efficacy and toxicity of TIP combination (paclitaxel, ifosfamid, cisplatin) as first salvage treatment in patients with relapsed germ cell tumours (GCTs). PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of postchemotherapy surgery in patients with nonseminomatous germ cell tumors arising from the anterior mediastinum.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients with nonseminoma arising from a mediastinal primary site were treated on a clinical trial at our center, and they underwent postchemotherapy surgery. The results of postchemotherapy surgical resection, frequency of viable tumor found during postchemotherapy surgery, and prognostic factors for survival were assessed.
