IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD: Nosocomial infections caused by multi-drug resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria are on the increase, often with few or no therapeutic options for treatment. Historically, a successful approach to generate novel antibiotics has been the chemical modification of existing classes, addressing deficiencies such as resistance mechanisms, safety profile or pharmacokinetic parameters. Aminoglycosides (AGs) represent one of the five clinically-used classes (AGs, β-lactams, quinolones, tetracyclines and sulfonamides) with activity against Gram-negative bacteria.

To evaluate the activity of pyrrolidonyl arylamidase (PYR) for the differentiation and identification of nonfermenting gram negative rods (NFGNR), 293 isolates were tested. A 24 h culture of each test organism was prepared. From this a 108-109 cfu/mL suspension was added to 0.25 mL of sterile physiologic solution. Meropenem was compared in vitro with imipenem as well as with several other contemporary beta-lactams, ciprofloxacin, and gentamicin against a group of highly antibiotic resistant members of the family Enterobacteriaceae and a collection of oxidase-positive and/or glucose-nonfermentative gram-negative bacilli. In this study, meropenem was more active than imipenem against isolates of Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Morganella, Providencia, Alcaligenes, Aeromonas, and Pasteurella.

Periapical tissue from 58 cases requiring periapical surgery was examined histologically and cultured for the presence of microbes. Twenty-nine had a possible oral cavity communication and 29 did not. Approximately one-half of each biopsy was submitted for culture while the other portion was examined histologically. The in vitro activity of gemifloxacin against over 4900 bacterial isolates was determined by microbroth dilution with interpretation in accordance with NCCLS guidelines. Susceptibility results were compared with those for ciprofloxacin, gatifloxacin, levofloxacin and moxifloxacin. Gram-negative (n=2213) and Gram-positive (n=2424) pathogens isolated from patients in 13 Canadian hospitals in 2014 and 2015 were tested for in vitro susceptibility to eravacycline and comparators using the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute broth microdilution method. Taxonomic complex of vaginal microflora and its persistence characteristics in trichomoniasis and microecological disturbances were studied. Diminution of biotope colonization resistance was characterized by decreased autochthonous microorganisms' number and increased opportunistic microflora with expressed persistence. That could be of a great pathogenetic importance in the occurrence of reproductive tract inflammatory diseases of the bacterial etiology in addition of trichomoniasis in females.
