Effects of fixed orthodontic brackets on oral malodor: A systematic review and meta-analysis according to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify whether there is any relationship between fixed orthodontic appliances and malodor, and if self-ligating brackets (SLBs) prevent malodor better than conventional brackets (CBs). METHODS: The electronic databases PubMed, Ovid, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to September 2016; a manual search was also performed. Randomized controlled and clinical controlled trials, in which experimental groups received fixed orthodontic therapy and malodor was measured, were included. Patients treated with fixe

Robust nondimensional estimators to assess the nasal airflow in health and disease.

There are significant variations of both human nose shapes and airflow patterns inside nasal cavities, so it is difficult to provide a comprehensive medical identification using a universal template for what otolaryngologists consider normal breathing at rest. In addition, airflow patterns present even more random characteristics in diseased nasal cavities. To give a medical assessment to differentiate the nasal cavities in health and disease, we propose 2 nondimensional estimators obtained from both medical images and computational fluid dynamics. The first mathematical estimator ϕ is a funct

Malodor reductions and improved oral hygiene by toothbrushing and mouthrinsing.

OBJECTIVE: This clinical study compared the effects of an antibacterial regimen, comprising a triclosan toothpaste and a 0.075% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) mouthrinse, on malodor, self-reported malodor, and oral hygiene measures such as dental plaque, gingivitis, and bleeding relative to brushing with a fluoride toothpaste. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At baseline, 36 subjects were evaluated for malodor (9-point organoleptic scale [OLT]), dental plaque (Turesky modification of Quigley-Hein; PI), gingivitis (Lφe-Silness; GI) and bleeding (Ainamo and Bay; BI) and randomized to (1) tooth brushing w

[The influence of breathing mode on the oral cavity].

Nose breathing is one of the key factors in the proper development and functioning of the oral cavity. The air passing through the nasal cav … y crowded teeth. Apart from malocclusion, chronic gingivitis, periodontitis, candida infections and halitosis are frequently present in mouth--breathing patients.

Correlation between oral malodor and periodontal bacteria.

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), including hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide, are primarily responsible for oral malodor. Recently, the mgl gene encoding L-methionine-alpha-deamino-gamma-mercaptomethane-lyase, which produces methyl mercaptan, was cloned from Porphyromonas gingivalis. This article discusses the mechanism and pathogenic role of the formation of VSCs by oral bacteria.

[The role of periodontal diseases in bad breath].

The majority of bad breath originates within the oral cavity. However, it is also possible that it is caused by other extra-oral sources. Ear-nose-and-throat causes and systemic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, uremia, liver failure, pulmonary carcinoma, bronchiectasis, are the most frequent problems. In 65-85% of the cases of bad breath, we find the cause in the parodontium and/or tongue. Components from tongue coating and periodontal pockets circulate through the saliva in the whole oral cavity and also reach the tonsils.

[Microbial study of the surface of malignant tumors of the oral cavity].

Malodour and other infection sequelae may increase the morbidity, compromise the oral well-being of the patient suffering from maxillo-facial neoplasia. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the differences of the oral bacterial flora attached to the tumor and the contra lateral sound surfaces. Swabs were obtained and samples were microbiologically cultured. It was concluded, that carcinoma surface biofilm harbors increased levels of both aerobs and anaerobs.

Oral malodor in dogs: measurement using a sulfide monitor.

In 28 dogs, oral malodor was assessed organoleptically (0-3 scale) and by measurement of volatile sulfur components (VSC), using two positions ('intraoral' and 'tooth surface') for sampling VSC. Significant correlations were found between: intraoral and tooth surface VSC collection positions (p < 0.0001) and between organoleptic and tooth surface VSC data (p < 0.0001). VSC measurement is a sensitive, repeatable and non-subjective method of assessing oral malodor in dogs.

The effect of oral rinses on organoleptic mouth odor ratings and levels of volatile sulfur compounds.

A test mouthwash, saline rinse, and no treatment were evaluated for their effects on organoleptic mouth odor ratings (OR) and corresponding concentrations of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) in sixty-two subjects. The mouthwash was significantly superior to the saline rinse and to no treatment in reducing OR and VSC for 3 hours, which was the duration of the study.

Dental Application of Natural Products.

This review article summarizes the recent progress in dental applications of natural products. Catechin gel showed selective antimicrobial activity, whereas the alkaline extract of various plant species rich in lignin carbohydrate complex (LCC) showed much higher antiviral activity than lower molecular weight polyphenols. Mouthwash with the alkaline extract of a plant classified as OTC effectively reduced halitosis. Unexpectedly, many polyphenolic compounds purified from the natural kingdom showed much lower tumor-specificity against human oral squamous cell lines as compared with antitumor ag…

Making periodontal risk visible: the role of artificial intelligence in recall adherence.

Supportive periodontal care is essential for maintaining periodontal stability after active therapy, yet adherence to periodontal maintenance remains difficult. Once bleeding, halitosis or other presenting concerns improve, some patients may interpret the disease as resolved and the maintenance visit as "just a clean." This Perspective uses the intention-behaviour gap to examine behavioural, financial and health-literacy barriers to continued supportive care. It then considers a narrower, testable hypothesis: artificial intelligence (AI) might assist clinicians in organising clinician-verified…

Salvage reconstruction of an endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastroenterostomy using a tubular enteral stent after inadvertent transcolonic lumen-apposing metal stent deployment.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: EUS-guided gastroenterostomy (EUS-GE) is effective for palliating malignant gastric outlet obstruction (GOO). Inadvertent gastrocolostomy, although rare, can be a serious adverse event. We present an endoscopic rescue strategy in a case of gastrocolonic and colojejunal fistula after EUS-GE. METHODS: A 59-year-old woman with duodenal adenocarcinoma underwent EUS-GE with a 20- × 10-mm lumen-apposing metal stent (LAMS) because of GOO. One week later, the patient presented with postprandial diarrhea, nausea, and halitosis. Imaging and endoscopy revealed a gastrocolonic fistul…
