Hidden populations: risk behaviours in drug-using populations in the Republic of Georgia through subsequent peer-driven interventions.

BACKGROUND: Georgia has a significant risk of ongoing HIV and HCV outbreak. Within this context, harm reduction aims to reduce risk associated with drug use through community activities, such as peer recruitment and involvement. The aim of this study was to identify significant differences between known and hidden populations, and attest to the ongoing utility of peer-driven intervention across multiple years in recruiting high-risk, vulnerable populations through peer networks. It was hypothesised that significant differences would remain between known, and previously unknown, members of the …

A Strait or an Ocean? Exploring Risks and Resources among People who use Drugs in Denmark and Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Denmark and Sweden have similar welfare systems, but different drug policies. Denmark has historically a more liberal and more harm reduction-oriented drug policy than Sweden. On this background, we present a study of risks and use of formal and informal resources among structurally vulnerable people who use drugs in Copenhagen in Denmark and Malmö in Sweden. METHODS: The study reports from research projects in each city that investigated the everyday lives and risks- and enabling environments of structurally vulnerable people who use drugs. Both projects involved the same survey.…

Comprehensive drug policies increase trust in local government: an analysis of authorities' and residents' perspectives in rural US Appalachian and Midwestern counties.

BACKGROUND: In many rural US Appalachian and Midwestern counties, stigma surrounding harm reduction interventions has led health professionals and policymakers to approach drug policy implementation with caution, fearing potential backlash from politically conservative communities. One concern is that the public's disapproval of harm-reduction policies may erode the public's trust in its government. METHODS: This study examined how the public's trust in the local government-as both self-reported and authority-assessed-is influenced by the perceived governmental support of comprehensive drug p…

A cross-national analysis of the effects of methadone maintenance and needle and syringe program implementation on incidence rates of HIV in Europe from 1995 to 2011.

Although many studies have found an association between harm reduction interventions and reductions in incidence rates of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection, scant research explores the effects of harm reduction cross-nationally. This study used a year- and country-level fixed effects model to estimate the potential effects of needle-and-syringe programs (NSPs) and methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) on incidence rates of HIV in the general population and among people who inject drugs (PWID), in a sample of 28 European nations. After adjusting for Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and tot…

Incidence and Risk Factors for Deliberate Self-harm, Mental Illness, and Suicide Following Bariatric Surgery: A State-wide Population-based Linked-data Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Assess the incidence and determinants of hospitalization for deliberate self-harm and mental health disorders, and suicide after bariatric surgery. BACKGROUND: Limited recent literature suggests an increase in deliberate self-harm following bariatric surgery. METHODS: A state-wide, population-based, self-matched, longitudinal cohort study over a 5-year period between 2007 and 2011. Utilizing the Western Australian Department of Health Data Linkage Unit records, all patients undergoing bariatric surgery (n = 12062) in Western Australia were followed for an average 30.4 months preop

A systematic review identifying personally modifiable factors for self-harm recovery in young people and the barriers and facilitators to their implementation.

INTRODUCTION: While research has extensively examined self-harm prevention and risk factors, fewer studies have explored recovery processes. Personally modifiable factors - lifestyle, skill-based, or behavioural aspects an individual can influence - may support self-harm recovery. This review aimed to identify these factors for young people and, secondarily, the barriers and facilitators affecting their implementation. METHODS: Recovery was defined symptomatically (reduction or cessation of self-harm) and personally, using the CHIME framework (Connectedness, Hope, Identity, Meaning, Empowerme

Three Contrasting Accounts of Electronic Gambling Machine Related Harm: Impacts on Community Views Towards Gambling Policy and Responsibility.

This study investigated whether there was community support for prominent gambling harm reduction policies, as well as perceived responsibility for electronic gambling machine (EGM) related harm in an Australian sample (n = 906). Using a randomised experimental design, we also explored whether these outcomes were influenced by three alternative explanations for EGM-related harm: a brain-based account of gambling addiction, an account that highlighted the intentional design of the gambling environment focused on the "losses disguised as wins" (LDWs), and a media release advocating against furth…

Derealization and self-harm strategies are used to regulate disgust, fear, and sadness in adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

Emotion regulation (ER) difficulties have been identified as an important target for clinical intervention in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). However, there is limited research regarding the use of specific strategies to regulate specific emotions following exposure to traumatic events. The aim of the current study was to investigate the indirect effects of four trauma-related emotions (anger, sadness, disgust, and fear) on PTSD severity via two mediators: derealization and self-harm. In particular, we tested that if

'I won't make it without this program': the impact of safer opioid supply program closures in Ontario.

BACKGROUND: Canada is in the midst of a worsening overdose crisis, driven largely by the unregulated drug supply. In response, safer opioid supply (SOS) programs were implemented to provide pharmaceutical-grade opioids alongside critical services. However, in August 2024, Ontario's provincial government introduced restrictions on harm reduction initiatives, coinciding with the expiration of federal funding, forcing many programs to close. In their place, the government announced the implementation of Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment Hubs, which exclude harm reduction programs, inc…
