BACKGROUND: National estimates of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding patterns among youth in the USA are lacking.
METHODS: We analysed the 2011 YouthStyles survey to estimate the proportion of 12-17 year olds in the USA who had ridden an ATV at least once during the past 12 months and summarise their patterns of helmet use.
RESULTS: Of the 831 youth respondents, an estimated 25% reported riding an ATV at least once during the past year. The proportion of youth living outside of a Metropolitan Statistical Area who reported riding an ATV was twice that of those living inside of a Metropolitan St

BACKGROUND: The study was designed to describe the characteristics of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) rider fatalities and fatal crashes involving ATVs that occur on public roads.
METHODS: Information on fatal crashes occurring on public roads during the years 2007-2011 was obtained from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
RESULTS: There were 1,701 ATV rider deaths during the 5-year study period, including 1,482 drivers, 210 passengers, and 9 with unknown rider status. An additional 19 non-ATV occupants, primarily motorcyclists, died in crashes with ATVs. About half of the ATV passenger

BACKGROUND: Horse riding and horse handling are dangerous. There is a lack of knowledge concerning the incidence of hospitalization due to horse-related injuries and types of injuries in Israel. During the last two decades we have observed an increasing incidence of hospitalizations due to horse-related injuries at our medical center as well as the frequent involvement of pediatric patients.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate these injuries with respect to type, incidence and modes of prevention.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of medical records for all patients admitted to Assaf Harofe

BACKGROUND: The burden of all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries and deaths in the pediatric population has increased dramatically during the past decade. Brain injuries represent a large proportion of these injuries and are the leading cause of death among those injured. Despite the risk involved in operating these vehicles, helmet use remains low. The aim of this study was to identify and understand common barriers and facilitators to helmet use among ATV users.
METHODS: Focus groups were conducted in Arkansas with adolescent and adult ATV users to discuss ATV and safety equipment use.

Concussion is a major public health concern with nearly 4 million injuries occurring each year in the United States. In the acute post-injury stage, concussed individuals demonstrate cognitive function and motor control declines as well as reporting increased symptoms. Researchers have hypothesized that the severity of these impairments is related to impact magnitude. Using the Head Impact Telemetry System (HITS) to record head impact biomechanics, we sought to correlate pre- and post-concussive impact characteristics with declines in cognitive performance and increases in concussion-related s

At a Nigerian university hospital, none of the motorcyclists who presented over a 12 month period had been wearing a helmet, and of the eight patients who died, seven had head injuries. Of the five collision types described, the rate of motorcycle-other vehicle collisions was highest at 40.6%, while the motorcycle-pedestrian rate was 23.4%. Measures to prevent these collisions might reduce overall crashes by 64%; in addition, helmet law should be enforced.

PURPOSE: To examine national trends in transportation-related injury risk and safety behaviors among U.S. high school students.
METHODS: To examine secular trends in riding with a driver who had been drinking, driving after drinking, and using seat belts, bicycle helmets, and motorcycle helmets, we used logistic regression to analyze data from national Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (YRBS) conducted in 1991, 1993, 1995, and 1997. The YRBS is a self-administered, anonymous survey that uses a national probability sample of U.S. students in public and private schools from grades 9-12 (N = 55,734 fo

This paper examines motorcycle helmet use and injuries in a developing country with a helmet law. Data were collected by systematic street observations and interviews with motorcyclists and supplemented with motorcycle injury data from a 1 month study of all patients coming to emergency departments in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Observations show that 89% of motorcycle drivers (N = 9242) wore helmets; only 20% of the passengers (N = 3541) did. However, only 55% of the drivers wore helmets correctly (e.g. with chin strap buckled). Differences in time and place were noted in interviews when motorcycl

OBJECTIVE: To review all bicycle crash-related injuries reported to the Oregon Injury Registry for 1989 to compare patterns of injury and other features in adults vs children and adolescents.
METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted using data from the Oregon Injury Registry. For 1989, this registry included all injury-related deaths and approximately 75% of hospital admissions of 24 hours or more for injury in the State of Oregon. Deaths, helmet use, neurologic injuries, and concurrent ethanol use were evaluated for all patients and for the two age groups.
RESULTS: There wer

BACKGROUND: Helmet use is widely accepted to reduce head injury severity by absorbing impact forces, but the specific effect on the presence of radiologically detected intracranial injuries remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between helmet use and Rotterdam CT score components, craniocervical fractures, and short-term mortality in cyclists and motorcyclists with severe TBI.
METHOD: This is a secondary analysis of data from the BRAIN-PROTECT dataset, a prospective observational study of 2,589 subjects with severe traumatic brain injury in the Netherlands. Logistic regress

INTRODUCTION: Acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure is a common reason for intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Non-invasive respiratory support strategies such as high-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) and helmet non-invasive ventilation may reduce the need for invasive mechanical ventilation and death. The High-flow nasal Oxygen with or without alternating helmet Non-invasive ventilation for Oxygenation sUpport in acute Respiratory failure pilot trial is designed to compare helmet non-invasive ventilation combined with HFNO vs HFNO alone in patients with acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure and to det

OBJECTIVES: In western countries, a typical car-motorcycle crash occurs at an intersection where a car manoeuvres into the path of an oncoming motorcycle, which involves a car driver violates motorcycle's right of way (ROW). In Taiwan, however, a unique type of crash (approach-turn crash) occurs when a turning (including U-turn) motorcycle frequently infringes upon a car's ROW. The primary objective of this study was to examine injuries sustained by motorcyclists in this unique type of crash.
METHOD: Using the linked data from the National Taiwan Crash Database and the National Health Insuran

CONTEXT: The sideline assessment of concussion is challenging, given its variable presentations, the limited sensitivity and specificity of sideline assessment tools, and how the presentation of the injury evolves over time. In addition, the diagnostic process, as well as the tools used to assess and manage concussion, continue to progress as research and what we know about concussion advance. This paper focuses on the initial assessment on the sideline by reviewing the concussion-evaluation literature, drawing from clinical experience to emphasize a standardized approach, and underscoring the

The present study examined the potential relationship between parenting variables and estimations of children's bicycle helmet use. Parents (N = 121) completed surveys asking about parental monitoring and questions about their bicycle habits and attitudes, as well as their expectations for their children to wear a helmet and their estimation of how often their children wear a helmet. Parents reported stronger helmet rules for their children who are beginning cyclists rather than experienced cyclists, and rules for experienced cyclists were more strongly endorsed among parents who reported more

Motorcycle crashes frequently involve a combination of high-risk behaviors by the motorcyclist or the other crash-involved driver. Such behaviors may include riding or driving without appropriate licensure or while under the influence of alcohol, as well as deciding not to use a safety device such as a helmet or safety belt. Given that these factors frequently occur in combination with one another, it is difficult to untangle the specific effects of individual factors leading up to the crash outcome. This study assesses how various rider-, driver-, and other crash-specific factors contribute t

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the effects of wearing a helmet on head and facial injury among users of motorized two-wheel vehicles and to determine if helmet use increases the risk of neck and cervical spine injury.
DESIGN/METHOD: A population-based study involving injured riders from the Rhône Road Trauma Registry from 1996 to 2005. Victims were only included if they had an injury to a body region other than (or in addition to) the head, face, neck, or cervical spine. Thus, inclusion was not affected by helmet use by the rider. The risk of head, face, neck, and cervical spine injury was assessed,

Self-injurious behavior was examined in a case study of head-banging by an 8-year-old girl with profound mental retardation and an autistic disorder. Trajectories of the arm movements and impact forces of the head blows were determined from a dynamic analysis of videotapes. Results revealed a high degree of cycle-to-cycle consistency in the qualitative dynamics of the limb motions, with one hand motions being faster than those with two hands (inphase and antiphase) and the motions with the helmet about 25% faster than those without the helmet. The impact force of SIBs as a percentage of body w
