Occurrence and removal of estrogens, progesterone and testosterone in three constructed wetlands treating municipal sewage in the Czech Republic.

Estrogenic hormones, progesterone and testosterone are endocrine-disrupting chemicals and their presence in aquatic environments represents a potentially adverse environmental and public health impact. There is a considerable amount of information about removal of estrogens, progesterone and testosterone in conventional wastewater treatment plants, namely activated sludge systems. However, the information about removal of these compounds in constructed wetlands is very limited. Three constructed wetlands with horizontal subsurface flow in the Czech Republic have been selected to evaluate remov

Privacy Enhanced Healthcare Information Sharing System for Home-Based Care Environments.

OBJECTIVES: Home-based nursing care services have increased over the past decade. However, accountability and privacy issues as well as security concerns become more challenging during care provider visits. Because of the heterogeneous combination of mobile and stationary assistive medical care devices, conventional systems lack architectural consistency, which leads to inherent time delays and inaccuracies in sharing information. The goal of our study is to develop an architecture that meets the competing goals of accountability and privacy and enhances security in distributed home-based care

Using European travellers as an early alert to detect emerging pathogens in countries with limited laboratory resources.

BACKGROUND: The volume, extent and speed of travel have dramatically increased in the past decades, providing the potential for an infectious disease to spread through the transportation network. By collecting information on the suspected place of infection, existing surveillance systems in industrialized countries may provide timely information for areas of the world without adequate surveillance currently in place. We present the results of a case study using reported cases of Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1 (Sd1) in European travellers to detect "events" of Sd1, related to either epidemic c

Using Telemedicine to Monitor the Patient with Chronic Respiratory Failure.

Background: Advances in management have improved mortality of individuals with chronic respiratory failure (CRF), leading to an increase in need for long-term oxygen therapy and/or ventilatory support. These individuals require frequent visits and monitoring of their physiological parameters as well as of the functioning of their devices, such as ventilators or oxygen concentrators. Telemedicine is a clinical application of Information Communication Technology connecting patients to specialised care consultants. This narrative review aims to explore the current available telemonitoring options

The role of systems biology approaches in determining molecular signatures for the development of more effective vaccines.

INTRODUCTION: Emerging infectious diseases are a major threat to public health, and while vaccines have proven to be one of the most effective preventive measures for infectious diseases, we still do not have safe and effective vaccines against many human pathogens, and emerging diseases continually pose new threats. The purpose of this review is to discuss how the creation of vaccines for these new threats has been hindered by limitations in the current approach to vaccine development. Recent advances in high-throughput technologies have enabled scientists to apply systems biology approaches

Monitoring vaccine safety using the vaccine safety Datalink: Assessing capacity to integrate data from Immunization Information systems.

BACKGROUND: The Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) uses vaccination data from electronic health records (EHR) at eight integrated health systems to monitor vaccine safety. Accurate capture of data from vaccines administered outside of the health system is critical for vaccine safety research, especially for COVID-19 vaccines, where many are administered in non-traditional settings. However, timely access and inclusion of data from Immunization Information Systems (IIS) into VSD safety assessments is not well understood. METHODS: We surveyed the eight data-contributing VSD sites to assess: 1) statu

A review of mental health and wellbeing under climate change in small island developing states (SIDS).

Small island developing states (SIDS) are often at the forefront of climate change impacts, including those related to health, but information on mental health and wellbeing is typically underreported. To help address this research lacuna, this paper reviews research about mental health and wellbeing under climate change in SIDS. Due to major differences in the literature's methodologies, results, and analyses, the method is an overview and qualitative evidence synthesis of peer-reviewed publications. The findings show that mental health and wellbeing in the context of climate change have yet

[Hype about vitamin D substitution: what remains?].

The hype about vitamin D can be traced back to the ubiquitous presence of vitamin D receptors in many organ systems, in addition to the importance for healthy bones. Large observational studies have provided indications that a vitamin D deficiency favors risks for age-associated chronic diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. In this article the latest information on bone health in adult persons as well as cancer and cardiovascular diseases is summarized based on the current results of the large vitamin D and omega‑3 trial (VITAL).

Mistrust and misinformation in a colorectal cancer care: rebuilding credibility in the digital age.

Mistrust in healthcare and the rapid spread of misinformation have become critical challenges in contemporary colorectal cancer (CRC) care. While diagnostic and therapeutic strategies have advanced, many patients now arrive at clinical appointments influenced by online narratives that distort risk, undermine screening, and question the intentions of clinicians and health systems. These dynamics are particularly evident among younger adults, who represent a growing proportion of CRC diagnoses and often rely on social media as a primary source of health information. This commentary explores how

Automatic Recognition of Fish Behavior with a Fusion of RGB and Optical Flow Data Based on Deep Learning.

The rapid and precise recognition of fish behavior is critical in perceiving health and welfare by allowing farmers to make informed management decisions on recirculating aquaculture systems while reducing labor. The conventional recognition methods are to obtain movement information by implanting sensors on the skin or in the body of the fish, which can affect the normal behavior and welfare of the fish. We present a novel nondestructive method with spatiotemporal and motion information based on deep learning for real-time recognition of fish schools' behavior. In this work, a dual-stream 3D

Do mental health professionals use diagnostic classifications the way we think they do? A global survey.

We report on a global survey of diagnosing mental health professionals, primarily psychiatrists, conducted as a part of the development of the ICD-11 mental and behavioural disorders classification. The survey assessed these professionals' use of various components of the ICD-10 and the DSM, their attitudes concerning the utility of these systems, and usage of "residual" (i.e., "other" or "unspecified") categories. In previous surveys, most mental health professionals reported they often use a formal classification system in everyday clinical work, but very little is known about precisely how
