INTRODUCTION: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) produces alterations in the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which explains the cardiac manifestations observed in patients. The assessment of heart rate variability (HRV) is what best reflects the activity of the ANS on heart rate. The Polar H7 Bluetooth® device proves to be a non-invasive and much faster technology than existing alternatives for this purpose.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to determine HRV using Polar H7 Bluetooth technology in ALS patients, comparing the obtained measurements with values from healthy individuals.

We assessed the accuracy and inter-sessional reliability of traditional (manual) compared to automatic (AutoHR) heart rate (HR) clamping methods during submaximal intensity continuous cycling. On separate occasions, thirteen males cycled at an HR corresponding to 80% of the ventilatory threshold for 18 min. Cycling power output was adjusted using either manual or AutoHR methods, encompassing three trials per method. For the manual method, cycling power output was adjusted every 30 s by 0, 5 or 10 W at the experimenter's discretion. Conversely, AutoHR automatically adjusted power output based o…

The aim of the proof-of-concept study is to investigate the level of concordance between the heart rate variability (HRV), the EEG-based Narcotrend Index as a surrogate marker for the depth of hypnosis, and the minimal alveolar concentration (MAC) of the inhalation anesthetic sevoflurane across the entire course of a surgical procedure. This non-blinded cross-sectional study recorded intraoperative HRV, Narcotrend Index, and MAC in 31 male patients during radical prostatectomy using the Da-Vinci robotic-assisted surgical system at Mannheim University Medical Center. The degree of concordance w…

Recovery is a critical factor in athletic performance, and accelerating this process is essential to enable athletes to perform more effectively in both training load and competitive performance. After exercise, immediate recovery is potentially helpful for investigating autonomic activity levels, as they are definable with heart rate variability (HRV). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of ten sessions of HRV-Biofeedback (HRV-BF) training on recovery process parameters after the aerobic performance. In this study, twenty-four soccer players aged 18-24 volunteered to participa…

B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels accurately reflect the degree of cardiac overload in heart failure. Considering cardiac morphology and intracardiac pressure, including the left ventricular end-systolic volume index (LVESVI) and left ventricular end-diastolic volume index (LVEDVI), is essential for cardiac overload assessment. These indexes influence plasma BNP levels, and high heart rate is likely associated with cardiac morphology. However, the direct relationship between high heart rate and plasma BNP levels remains unknown. In this study, we simultaneously measured various hemodynam…

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV), defined as the variability between successive heart beats, is a noninvasive measure of autonomic nervous system (ANS) function, which may be altered following traumatic brain injury (TBI). This scoping review summarizes the existing literature regarding changes in HRV after TBI as well as the association between measures of HRV and outcomes following TBI.
METHODS: A literature search for articles assessing 'heart rate variability' and 'brain injury' or 'concussion' was completed. Articles were included if HRV was measured in human subjects with TBI or…

BACKGROUND: Elevated heart rate (HR) predicts cardiovascular disease and mortality, but there are no established normal limits for ambulatory HR. We used data from the Swedish CArdioPulmonary Imaging Study to determine reference ranges for ambulatory HR in a middle-aged population. We also studied clinical correlates of ambulatory HR.
METHODS: A 24-hour ECG was registered in 5809 atrial fibrillation-free individuals, aged 50-65 years. A healthy subset (n=3942) was used to establish reference values (excluding persons with beta-blockers, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, heart failure, ana…

INTRODUCTION: Diving in SCUBA modality modifies human physiology in many ways. These modifications have been studied since Paul Bert in a seminal work. This area of research is very sensible to technological development. At now, it is possible to record heart rate (HR) continuously while diving. The study of HR changes in SCUBA diving at different depths in a constant temperature of thermal water is the objective of the present paper.
METHODS: 18 healthy subjects were enrolled and HR was recorded while SCUBA diving in thermal water at a constant temperature of 33.6∘ C in the deepest Italian p…

AIMS: There has been an unprecedented rise in electronic cigarette (EC) usage likely because of its perception of being safer than smoking. Recent studies show that EC exposures impact heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV), but how they are affected by the timing and frequency of exposures remain unclear. We examined the electrocardiographic (EKG) effects induced by brief EC exposures over time, their relation to EC aerosol particle and mass concentrations, and potential to promote prooxidative effects in the lungs.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Recent studies suggest that sleepy patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are at higher risk for incident cardiovascular disease. This study assessed cardiac autonomic function in sleepy versus non-sleepy patients with OSA using heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. We hypothesized that HRV profiles of sleepy patients would indicate higher cardiovascular risk.
METHODS: Electrocardiograms (ECG) derived from polysomnograms (PSG) collected by the Sydney Sleep Biobank were used to study HRV in groups of sleepy (ESS ≥ 10) and non-sleepy OSA patients (ESS < 10). HRV paramete…

Heart rate variability (HRV) serves as a significant physiological measure that mirrors the regulatory capacity of the cardiac autonomic nervous system. It not only indicates the extent of the autonomic nervous system's influence on heart function but also unveils the connection between emotions and psychological disorders. Currently, in the field of emotion recognition using HRV, most methods focus on feature extraction through the comprehensive analysis of signal characteristics; however, these methods lack in-depth analysis of the local features in the HRV signal and cannot fully utilize th…
