Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS) is a rare disease associated with either isolated growth hormone deficiency (GHD) or combined pituitary hormone deficiency (CPHD). In older children and adults, most patients experience short stature or hypogonadism. Neonatal PSIS is extremely rare and is difficult to recognize due to absence of dwarfism. However, when this condition occurs in newborns, it is often life-threatening. Here, we collected patients with neonatal PSIS to clarify its characteristics to improve its early diagnosis. The patients included in this study were treated at the pedi

BACKGROUND: Determination of blood donor hemoglobin (Hb) levels is a pre-requisite to ensure donor safety and blood product quality. We aimed to identify Hb measurement practices across blood donation services and to what extent differences associate with low-Hb deferral rates.
METHODS: An online survey was performed among Biomedical Excellence for Safer Transfusion (BEST) Collaborative members, extended with published data. Multivariable negative-binomial regression models were built to estimate adjusted associations of minimum donation intervals, Hb cut-offs (high, ≥13.5 g/dL in men or ≥ 12

Dehydration, electrolyte disturbance, and acid-base imbalance are the most significant consequences of diarrhea in calves. We aimed to determine blood gas, hematological, electrolyte, and biochemical values and investigate the relationship between the physical status and blood parameters in Korean native calves (KNCs) with diarrhea. One hundred eighty KNCs with diarrhea (age < 75 days) were investigated. Blood samples were collected from the external jugular vein and analyzed using a portable clinical blood gas analyzer. The measured parameters were statistically compared according to the stat

Leptospirosisis a zoonosis caused by spirochaetes from the species Leptospira The more severe form of leptospirosis, known as Weil's disease, is characterised by the triad of jaundice, renal impairment and haemorrhages. Pulmonary involvement occurs in 20%-70% of the patients, with severity ranging from non-productive cough to respiratory failure mainly due to pulmonary haemorrhage. Recognition of Weil's disease in patients presenting with pulmonary symptoms can be difficult. This case illustrates a classic case of pulmonary haemorrhagic involvement in Weil's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is an inborn error of metabolism with significant morbidity and mortality. Its presentation is nonspecific leading to delayed or missed diagnosis. Low alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a diagnostic test. Unlike high ALP, low level is commonly not flagged by laboratories as abnormal. A new treatment was shown to be effective in HPP. In this study we aimed to establish the frequency of low ALP levels requiring notification to physicians by the laboratory and also to describe the clinical manifestations of patients presenting with low ALP for a possible diagnosis of

BACKGROUND: Hemolysis of RBCs is an important measure of product quality and is influenced by donor factors, blood component manufacturing and storage. Percent hemolysis is determined using hematocrit (Hct), supernatant Hb (SHb) and total Hb (THb), each of which can be measured using a variety of methods.
METHODS: Sixteen members of an international collaborative were surveyed to understand equipment and procedural variation in hemolysis testing. In a laboratory-based evaluation, we examined how hemolysis was impacted by: measurement of Hct, SHb, THb and number and force of centrifugations fo

Monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance (MGRS) regroups all renal disorders caused by a monoclonal immunoglobulin (MIg) secreted by a nonmalignant B-cell clone. By definition, patients with MGRS do not meet the criteria for overt multiple myeloma/B-cell proliferation, and the hematologic disorder is generally consistent with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). However, MGRS is associated with high morbidity due to the severity of renal and sometimes systemic lesions induced by the MIg. Early recognition is crucial, as suppression of MIg secretion by chemotherapy ofte

In 2006 we had a patient with Lassa fever in the University Hospital of Frankfurt. To insure a short turn-around time from the laboratory, it was necessary to have blood which was not contaminated with viruses. One method of achieving this is by irradiating the blood with high doses of ionising radiation. Inactivation of arena viruses requires doses between 12 kGy and 20 kGy, depending on temperature. In this study we investigated if plasma and serum parameters are changed by irradiation with 5 kGy, 10 kGy, 15 kGy, 20 kGy or 40 kGy of 10 MeV electrons. For the 22 serum parameters measured ther

OBJECTIVES: Although total splenectomy is able to reduce clinical symptoms in patients with hereditary spherocytosis (HS), splenectomized patients are at risk to develop overwhelming bacterial infections and, to a lesser extent, thromboembolic complications. In contrast, partial splenectomy or partial splenic embolization (PSE) may also decrease the rate of hemolytic complications while maintaining residual splenic function. The aim of this study was to investigate the benefit of PSE in children with moderate to severe HS.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed PSE via retrograde transfemoral acc

During a normal menstrual cycle, serum levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol, and progesterone can vary widely between cycles for the same woman, as well as between different woman. Reliable reference values based on the local population are important for correct interpretation of laboratory results. The purpose of our study was to determine detailed reference values for these hormones throughout the menstrual cycle using the Abbott ARCHITECT system. From 20 volunteers (age 20-36 years) with normal cycles and no use of oral contraceptives, samples we

Inherited thrombophilias are a heterogenous group of conditions which have been implicated in a variety of pregnancy complications. Evidence is mounting that implicates these inherited disorders in a range of pregnancy outcomes, including recurrent miscarriage, late fetal loss, preeclampsia, abruptio placentae, and intrauterine growth restriction. The most commonly identified inherited thrombophilias consist of Factor V Leiden and the prothrombin gene mutation G20210A. Rarer inherited thrombophilic conditions include deficiencies of protein S, C and antithrombin. More recently, deficiency of p

Patients with hematologic malignancies or aplastic anemia may have reduced responses to platelet transfusions after multiple transfusions of standard red blood cells or platelet components. This situation, conventionally described as 'refractoriness' to platelet transfusions, may result from immune or non-immune causes. Non-immune causes include fever, infections, hypersplenism, disseminated intravascular coagulation, antibiotics, or veno-occlusive disease. Immune causes include platelet-reactive alloantibodies, which are typically antibodies to human leukocyte antigens (HLA) or, less commonly

Bleeding defects are of great interest in pediatrics since the prevalence of congenital forms and the early appearance of acquired ones. The pathology itself and the therapy indeed can often interfere with the growing-up patients. Bleeding defects have been identified with an heterogeneous group of clinical disease that differs from one another in etiology, pathogenesis, epidemiology and incidence in population. Bleeding diathesis is the common symptom: bleeding tendency may be mild, moderate or severe, localized or generalized, cutaneous or mucosal, superficial or deep. Bleeding disorders may
