Behaviour change interventions to promote household connectivity to sewer: a scoping review.

Households without access to a functioning and well-managed sanitation system produce untreated faecal waste. While connecting households to sewers is ideal in densely populated low-income areas, the connection rates often remain low. Most interventions to increase connectivity focused on addressing financial, social, and legal barriers; there is limited evidence on the effectiveness of behaviour change interventions in promoting sewer connections. Thus, we aim to understand the effectiveness of behaviour change interventions in increasing the uptake of sewer connections. We developed a review

Gambling Outlets Location in Urban Areas: A Case Study of Madrid.

Cities are certainly a key factor in the location of gambling facilities. This paper aims to map the location of gambling outlets in urban areas and to examine potential links between neighborhoods socioeconomic and demographic characteristics and gambling supply, taking into account spatial dependencies of neighboring areas. This correlation is of interest because neighborhood characteristics may attract sellers, and because the presence of gambling sellers may cause changes in neighborhood demographics. Using detailed official data from the city of Madrid for the year 2017, three spatial eco

Gender Differences in Cardiovascular Drugs.

The different responses of women and men to cardiovascular drugs reflect gender -specific variances in pharmacokinetic profiles and drug sensitivities coupled to inherent differences in the underlying physiology of each sex. Thus, many common cardiovascular drugs exhibit gender -specific therapeutic and adverse effects. For example, the QT interval of the electrocardiogram is longer in women compared to men, and accordingly, drugs that prolong the QT interval are more likely to cause lethal ventricular arrhythmias in female than male patients. As more clinical drug trials include women subject

Fabry disease: a review.

Fabry disease is an inherited deficiency of the lysosomal hydrolase alpha-galactosidase A (alpha GalA) due to mutations in the Gal gene at Xq22. The result is intralysosomal accumulation of glycosphingolipids. In males who carry the mutation (1/40,000), severe multisystem disease develops in childhood or adolescence. Attacks of acute pain lasting a few minutes to a few days occur in the hands and feet, joints, muscles, and abdomen, sometimes with a fever. Highly suggestive skin lesions called angiokeratomas develop, as well as cornea verticillata characterized by corneal deposits without visua

Two different mechanisms of noradrenaline release during normoxia and simulated ischemia in human cardiac tissue.

Species-related differences in the mechanisms of noradrenaline release during normoxia and myocardial ischemia emphasize the need for studies on human hearts. Therefore, the mechanisms of noradrenaline release were investigated during normoxia and energy depletion in incubated human atrial tissue and compared to the release characteristics in normoxic and ischemic rat heart. Potential differences of atrial versus ventricular myocardium were assessed by comparing catecholamine release during electrical stimulation and ischemia in isolated rat atrium with release characteristics in the intact pe

Implication of the human Binder of SPerm Homolog 1 (BSPH1) protein in capacitation.

Binder of SPerm (BSP) proteins are a family of proteins expressed exclusively in the male reproductive tract (seminal vesicles or epididymis) of several mammalian species. They are known to promote capacitation, a sperm maturation step essential for fertilization. Our recent studies have shown that in human, the Binder of SPerm Homolog 1 (BSPH1) is expressed solely in epididymal tissues. The goal of the current study was to characterize BSPH1 and evaluate its effect on different sperm functions. A human recombinant BSPH1 (rec-BSPH1) was produced, purified and refolded. Rec-BSPH1 was found to s

The changes with age of the anatomical distribution of fat.

During adolescence and the third decade of life a redistribution of bodily fat is occurring away from the extremities towards the trunk. During this time the process is occurring in both sexes although more rapidly in males than females, hence it is a masculinizing process. The process is seen in human populations from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Masculinizing characteristics like this one are predictors of chronic diseases such as diabetes and atherosclerosis late in life. The period from adolescence through young adulthood may be a sensitive time for the development of character

Assisted Living in the Atheroma: Elderly Macrophages Promote Plaques.

Age dominates as a risk factor for human atherosclerosis, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. A recent report described accumulation of senescent cells in atheromata of hypercholesterolemic mice and provides novel insights into how genes expressed by aging cells associate with the characteristics of human plaques implicated in cardiovascular events.

A cultured strain of "Helicobacter heilmannii," a human gastric pathogen, identified as H. bizzozeronii: evidence for zoonotic potential of Helicobacter.

We compared the characteristics of a cultured human "Helicobacter heilmannii" isolate with those of other helicobacters found in animals. Phenotypic, protein profile, 16S rDNA sequence, and DNA-DNA hybridization analyses identified the human strain as H. bizzozeronii, a species frequently found in dogs. Thus, H. bizzozeronii may have zoonotic potential.

Monoclonal antibody to a 35 kD epidermal protein induces cell detachment.

A murine monoclonal antibody (ECS-1) was prepared from BALB/c mice immunized with trypsinized cultured human foreskin keratinocytes. The antibody showed a pattern suggestive of intercellular staining on the nucleated layers of normal human epidermis, adult palm, mouse lip epidermis, and cultured human keratinocytes. ECS-1 stained human fetal skin by 9 weeks estimated gestational age. ECS-1 reacted with a 35 kD protein extracted from neonatal foreskin epidermis and cultured human keratinocytes. The protein required Nonidet P-40 or sodium dodecyl sulfate and mercaptoethanol for solubilization. E

Graph attention spatio-temporal graph neural network based human-light interaction modeling for indoor lighting environments.

In indoor light environment design, the dynamic interaction between human behavior and lighting systems has an important impact on environmental perception results. However, existing methods are difficult to describe its spatial structure and temporal evolution characteristics at the same time. To this end, this paper constructs a human-light spatio-temporal relationship modeling method based on graph attention spatio-temporal graph neural network, which uniformly represents human body nodes and lamp nodes as spatio-temporal graph structures, and introduces heterogeneous graph attention and ad

[Probiotics: history, definition, requirements and possible therapeutic applications].

The ingestion of probiotics is associated with various beneficial effects on human health and modifies the physiological homeostasis of the intestinal flora. Probiotics are microorganisms with some particular characteristics: human origin, safety in human use, bile and acid resistance, survival in the intestine, at least temporary colonization of the human gut, adhesion to the mucosa and bacteriocine production. Thanks to these characteristics, probiotics block the invasion of human intestinal cells by the enteroinvasive bacteria. Furthermore, they should be able to stimulate and modulate the

EDARV370A associated facial characteristics in Uyghur population revealing further pleiotropic effects.

An adaptive variant of human Ectodysplasin receptor, EDARV370A, had undergone strong positive selection in East Asia. In mice and humans, EDARV370A was found to affect ectodermal-derived characteristics, including hair thickness, hair shape, active sweat gland density and teeth formation. Facial characteristics are also largely ectodermal derived. In this study, taking advantage of an admixed population of East Asian and European ancestry-the Uyghur, we aim to test whether EDARV370A is affecting facial characteristics and to investigate its pleiotropic nature and genetic model. In a sample of

A review on micro- and nanoplastics in humans: Implication for their translocation of barriers and potential health effects.

As emerging contaminants, micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) can absorb and leach various toxic chemicals and ultimately endanger the health of the ecological environment and humans. With extensive research on MNPs, knowledge about MNPs in humans, especially their translocation of barriers and potential health effects, is of utmost importance. In this review, we collected literature published from 2000 to 2023, focusing on MNPs on their occurrence in humans, penetrating characteristics in the placental, blood-brain, and blood-testis barriers, and exposure effects on mammalian health. The character

Social Capital in the Newborn Period and Household Food Insecurity at Child Age Two Years.

OBJECTIVE: Cross-sectional analyses have demonstrated an association between lower social capital and higher food insecurity in families with children. This study examined the association between social capital in the newborn period and household food insecurity at child age 2 years in a diverse US sample. METHODS: This secondary analysis used survey data from 596 child-caregiver dyads enrolled at 6 US academic sites in Greenlight Plus, a childhood obesity prevention trial. Proportional odds regression models analyzed associations between 2 newborn-period social capital measures, caregiver so
