Combat-related blast-induced neurotrauma: a public health problem?

The purpose of this article is to raise nurses' awareness of the significance and potential public health impact of combat-related blast-induced neurotrauma (BINT) in U.S. troops returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. A comprehensive review of the current literature on BINT was completed by the author, based primarily on combat-related blast exposure in the military population. She found that it is necessary to theorize about potential etiologies for mild traumatic brain injury in the military population since the literature suggests that neurological and psychological trauma resulting from mili

Attachment style and defense mechanisms in parents who abuse their children.

Adult attachment style, defense mechanisms, and personal history of abuse was studied in a group of abusive parents. As a group, these parents made unusually high use of the defense of denial; this was especially true of those with a Fearful attachment style. However, the use of Identification was characteristic of those with a Preoccupied attachment style. Further, personal abuse history was related to adult attachment style. Those who reported having been abused as a child were less likely to have a Secure attachment style, and a history of physical or sexual abuse was associated with a Preo

Control and prevention of the genetic load of haemoglobinopathies in India.

Haemoglobinopathies and thalassaemia are inherited disorders which affect a large number of individuals in India. With a population of 950 million and a birth rate of 28 per thousand, it has been estimated that there would be about 42 million carriers and about 12,000 infants born each year will be inheriting a major haemoglobin disorder in India. In view of this heavy genetic load, frequent blood transfusions, high cost of treatment and management, physical trauma, and psychological and mental harassment to the patients and their families, it has been realized that the preventive genetic appr

The psychosocial aspects of narcolepsy.

Although referrals for narcolepsy are increasing, physicians continue to confront obstacles in diagnosing and treating this condition. Patients with narcolepsy also face challenges at work, at school, and at home. One of the more disturbing problems is the lack of public awareness of the disorder and its potential therapy. As a result, patients with narcolepsy are often viewed in the school or work setting as being "lazy." In addition, the psychological and sexual side effects of the medications currently available to treat narcolepsy can lead to marital, family, and work-related problems. Irr

[Psychometric evaluation of the psychoemotional stability in patients considered suitable for heart transplant].

The main purpose of this study was to make an objective assessment of emotional stability as a selection criterion in 14 heart transplant candidates (13 M, 1 F, 45.5 +/- 6.6 years). A psychometric study was conducted using Cognitive Behavioral Assessment (CBA 2.0 Primary-Scale Battery) and the Beck Depression Inventory. The main results of this study were the identification of: a) emotionally unstable patients (42%) who did not respond to the above mentioned selection criterion; b) stable psychological traits such as hostility, aloofness, extroversion as described in type A Behavior Pattern an

Prediction of kidney viability before transplantation.

A patient who receives a kidney transplant which fails suffers a physical and psychological disaster. Almost one-third of the kidneys transplanted in the United Kingdom are primary failures; many others function only after a delay, and the long term prognosis for these kidneys is poor. There is a need to identify kidneys which will function immediately after transplantation, those which will function after a delay and those which will never function. Such identification is seldom possible from the history. By continuous hypothermic perfusion we can identify a group of kidneys which will probab

In vivo probing of purinergic P2X7 as a potential biomarker for suicide risk: a hypothesis.

Suicide claims over 720,000 lives annually worldwide and for every suicide there are many more people who attempt suicide and with suicidal ideation being even more prevalent. To improve the identification of individuals at high risk for suicidal behavior, there is a need to study risk factors in relation to neurobiological mechanisms. This paper proposes an integrative neurobiological hypothesis linking childhood adversity as a known risk factor for suicide attempts and the experience of mental pain in individuals with childhood adversity in their background. The ideation-to-action theory pro

The association between intimate partner violence and suicide ideation and attempts among women: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects approximately 30 % of women worldwide and is a major public health problem. It has been increasingly linked to mental health challenges, notably suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between IPV (physical, sexual, and psychological violence) and suicidal ideation and attempts among women. The review adhered to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and was pre-registered with PROSPERO. METHODS: Five major scientific databases were searc

Body dissatisfaction, ethnic identity, and disordered eating among African American women.

Initial research suggested that only European American women developed eating disorders (Garner, 1993), yet recent studies have shown that African American women do experience them (e.g., Lester & Petrie, 1998b; Mulholland & Mintz, 2001) and also may be negatively affected by similar sociocultural variables. In this study, we examined a sociocultural model of eating disorders for African American women but included the influences of ethnic identity (e.g., Hall, 1995; Helms, 1990). Participants (N = 322) were drawn from 5 different universities. They completed measures representing ethnic ident

Psychological Factors and Personality Traits Influencing the Experience and Perception of Pain in Women Undergoing Mammography: Protocol for a Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer screening through mammography is essential for early detection and improved survival; however, pain and discomfort during the procedure remain major barriers to women's participation. Pain perception during mammography is influenced not only by technical factors but also by psychological variables such as anxiety, depression, pain catastrophizing, and personality traits. Despite growing evidence, findings on the role of psychological factors remain inconsistent, and the contribution of personality traits remains largely unexplored, highlighting the need for further in

Association Among Self-Compassion, Resilience, Positive Mental Health and Risk of Gaming Disorder in 18-30 Year Old Population in China and Thailand: A Cross-Regional Study.

AIM: The existing literature typically reports an association between Gaming Disorder (GD) and psychopathological outcomes. However, evidence linking positive psychological attributes with the risk of GD is rarely explored. The present study aimed to investigate the associations between resilience, positive mental health and self-compassion and the risk of GD in young adults. DESIGN: The study was cross-sectional, collecting data online in four cities across China and one city in Thailand. METHODS: Potential participants were recruited through social media, gaming platforms and tertiary inst

Psychological difficulties in refugee adolescents with war-related experiences and forced displacement: a community-based comparison with non-refugee peers.

BACKGROUND: The number of refugee and immigrant children and adolescents is rapidly increasing worldwide. Early identification of psychological risk factors is essential, as childhood mental health significantly influences outcomes in adulthood. This study examined psychological difficulties associated with refugee status, war-related experiences, and forced displacement in refugee adolescents, with a particular focus on emotion regulation, dissociation, somatization, and self-esteem. METHODS: Ninety-two adolescents (12-18 years) who migrated to Turkey due to the Syrian war were included in t

Investigating the association between pain and psychological vulnerabilities and postpartum depression.

Pain and psychological vulnerabilities may be associated with the development of postpartum depression (PPD) in women undergoing Cesarean delivery. However, there is limited information regarding women undergoing labor and delivery. We investigated whether pre-delivery pain and psychological vulnerabilities, and other risk factors were associated with an increased risk of PPD among laboring women. This was a secondary analysis of a clinical trial conducted between June 2017 and July 2021. The risk of PPD was assessed using an online survey on Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) adminis

Sport-related activities as a psychosocial strategy for mental health recovery following natural disasters: a narrative review.

Natural disasters-earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, wildfires, and storms-inflict profound and often enduring psychological trauma on affected populations. Survivors exhibit elevated rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, peritraumatic dissociation, social dysfunction, and somatic complaints. Despite this burden, mental health services in disaster-affected regions remain under-resourced, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This narrative review provides a conceptual synthesis of findings from 11 studies that examined the role of sport-related activities

Burnout origins and psychological training needs of medical students and junior doctors: Mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Burnout continues to proliferate in medicine, with reductions in demands failing to reduce rates of burnout or distress, particularly affecting junior doctors and medical students. A broader understanding of antecedents are needed to understand how effective support can be offered. This study aimed to delineate rates of burnout in a sample of junior doctors and medical students in the wake of COVID-19, identify clinical challenges and training needs for these groups, and explore contemporary workplace origins of distress and burnout, with implications for similar cohorts internat

The Role of Negative Affect and Experiential Avoidance in Postsurgical Pain and Fatigue Among Norwegian Women With Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Women undergoing breast cancer surgery frequently experience postsurgical pain and fatigue, which reduces their quality of life. Although psychological factors have been shown to play a role in predicting postsurgical outcomes, the subacute recovery phase often remains underexplored. In this secondary analysis of data from a randomised controlled trial, we sought to investigate the predictive role of negative affect and experiential avoidance on postsurgical symptoms during both acute and subacute recovery. METHODS: From the initial sample, 189 women who met the inclusion criteria
