[Alien hand syndrome due to a corpus callosum infarct: a case report].

The myotonic disorders, including the myotonic dystrophies (myotonic dystrophy type 1, DM1; myotonic dystrophy type 2, DM2/PROMM/PDM), the muscle channelopathies or non-dystrophic myotonias (chloride, sodium, calcium and potassium channelopathies) are all characterized by myotonia and muscle weakness despite different pathophysiology involved in these disorders. Myotonia may affect the eye, facial and jaw muscles as well as the hands and legs. It may be painful and disabling. Muscle weakness may be episodical as in the paralytic attacks of the sodium and calcium channelopathies or culminate in

Are deluded people unusually prone to illusory correlation?

This study reexamines the possibility that paranoid individuals are unusually prone to perceive illusory correlations. The authors use emotionally neutral word pairs to examine the illusory correlation phenomenon in three diagnostic groups: nonparanoid schizophrenia (n = 10), paranoid schizophrenia or delusional disorder (n = 9), and depression (n = 10). A one-way analysis of variance shows that the three groups do not differ in their tendency to make illusory correlations. Three separate t tests that compare the data from each of the clinical groups in this study with normative data again rev

Simulator induced syndrome in Coast Guard aviators.

The incidence of adverse symptoms in Coast Guard aviators undergoing flight simulator training was determined. A voluntary, multi-part questionnaire was completed by 238 pilots. During the first simulator flight 64.3% of pilots reported at least one adverse symptom, 39.4% during the last flight. Simulator induced syndrome (SIS) was present in 47.1% of subjects during the first simulator flight, 23.5% during their last flight. Most subjects reported their symptoms as mild, with some symptoms rated as moderate or severe in nature. There was no statistically significant association (p greater tha

The influence of spontaneous brain oscillations on apparent motion perception.

A good example of inferential processes in perception is long-range apparent motion (AM), the illusory percept of visual motion that occurs when two spatially distinct stationary visual objects are presented in alternating sequence. The AM illusion is strongest at presentation frequencies around 3 Hz. At lower presentation frequencies, the percept varies from trial to trial between AM and sequential alternation, while at higher frequencies perception varies between AM and two simultaneously flickering objects. Previous studies have demonstrated that prestimulus alpha oscillations explain trial

Grapheme-color synesthetes show enhanced crossmodal processing between auditory and visual modalities.

Synesthesia is an involuntary experience in which stimulation of one sensory modality triggers additional, atypical sensory experiences. Strong multisensory processes are present in the general population, but the relationship between these 'normal' sensory interactions and synesthesia is currently unknown. Neuroimaging research suggests that some forms of synesthesia are caused by enhanced cross-activation between brain areas specialized for the processing of different sensory attributes, and finds evidence of increased white matter connections among regions known to be involved in typical cr

Spatial attention facilitates selection of illusory objects: evidence from event-related brain potentials.

The relationship between spatial attention and object-based attention has long been debated. On the basis of behavioral evidence it has been hypothesized that these two forms of attention share a common mechanism, such that directing spatial attention to one part of an object facilitates the selection of the entire object. In a previous study (Martinez, A., Teder-Salejarvi, W., Vazquez, M., Molholm, S., Foxe, J.J., Javitt, D.C., Di Russo, F., Worden, M.S., Hillyard, S.A., 2006. Attention 'capture' by the flash-lag flash.

We report data from eight participants who made alignment judgements between a moving object and a stationary, continuously visible 'landmark'. A reversing object had to overshoot the landmark by a significant amount in order to appear to reverse aligned with it. In addition, an adjacent flash irrelevant to the judgment task reliably increased this illusory 'foreshortening'. This and other results are most simply explained by a model in which the flash causes attentional capture, complemented by processes of temporal integration, or backward inhibition, and object representation. A flash used

Covariation bias for blood-injury stimuli and aversive outcomes.

Three illusory correlation experiments were conducted to determine whether a fear-relevant covariation bias (Tomarken, Mineka & Cook, 1989, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 98, 381-394) could be demonstrated using different types of fear-relevant stimuli from the blood-injury phobia category. In each experiment, women high and low on blood-injury fear were presented with fear-relevant slides depicting blood or injury, as well as slides from two neutral categories. A shock (aversive outcome), or a tone or no outcome (neutral outcomes) followed each by the 72 slides. Although the relationship bet

The perception of lightness in 3-D curved objects.

Lightness constancy in complex scenes requires that the visual system take account of information concerning variations of illumination falling on visible surfaces. Three experiments on the perception of lightness for three-dimensional (3-D) curved objects show that human observers are better able to perform this accounting for certain scenes than for others. The experiments investigate the effect of object curvature, illumination direction, and object shape on lightness perception. Lightness constancy was quite good when a rich local gray-level context was provided. Deviations occurred when b

Role of image acceleration in judging landing location of free-falling projectiles.

The vertical acceleration of the projective image of a free-falling object specifies whether the object will land behind or in front of the observation site. Human sensitivity to this visual cue was investigated in 4 studies. Experiments 1 and 2 examined sensitivity to both constant and accelerating vertical acceleration. Detection of acceleration required a total change in velocity that was about 20% of the average velocity. In Experiments 3 and 4, subjects judged where computer-simulated free-falling objects would land relative to the observation site by viewing the initial segment of the fl

Convenient falsehoods and inconvenient truths: Not what leaders thought they would learn.

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent global economic meltdown severely challenged the world. What leadership lessons did we learn? What should we have learned? As global managers and international human-resource-management thought leaders, have we undervalued the role of humility? Have we overemphasized leaders' impact while markedly underestimating the often-decisive influence of context? Have we embraced convenient illusions and rejected inconvenient truths? Whereas we are excellent at learning, are we equally good at unlearning-at dropping prior approaches and assumptions that either no lon…

It is supposed that the unusual motor activity of animals as well as appearance of illusions in cosmonauts and astronauts after switching from 1 to 0 g have the same nature and are related to the change in character of otolith organs stimulation. Considering this similarity of vestibular reactions, using animals seems rather perspective. Be …

The auditory trap: early semantic conflict and late monitoring breakdown drive false memories in cognitive aging.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive aging increases vulnerability to false memories, yet the neural mechanisms underlying age-related susceptibility across sensory modalities remain poorly understood. Most previous studies have focused on visual orthographic stimuli, leaving the neural dynamics of auditory false memories largely unexplored. METHODS: To examine whether age-related susceptibility to semantic illusions is modality-specific and to characterize its spatiotemporal neural dynamics, we employed a cross-modal Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm including Visual and Auditory conditions. Sixty-…

Minor Visual Phenomena in Lewy Body Disease: A Systematic Review.

Minor visual phenomena (MVP), such as visual illusions, pareidolias, feeling of presence, and passage hallucinations, are often experienced by patients with Lewy Body Disease (LBD), in addition to complex visual hallucinations (VH), even in the early stages of the disease. This systematic review aimed to provide an up-to-date literature review of the occurrence and prevalence of MVP in LBD and to assess their potential associations both with VH and visuoperceptual and visuospatial deficits. A systematic literature search was carried out in PubMed, Web of Science, APA PsycInfo, Scopus, and Coch…
