[Reproduction and immune factors in the male].

Sperm antigenicity is demonstrated by the formation of sperm antibodies following vasectomy and by the possible occurrence of hypersensitivity reactions in women to seminal fluid. It may be that immunosuppressor factors in seminal plasma, as well as certain placental hormones, could explain the fact that sperm are not rejected immunologically in the female genital tract. The role of these different immune factors in male infertility and in the pathogenesis of AIDS is discussed.

Mechanisms of hypertension in the cardiometabolic syndrome.

Arterial hypertension is often part of a constellation of anthropometric and metabolic abnormalities that occur simultaneously to a higher degree than would be expected by chance alone, supporting the existence of a discrete disorder, the so-called metabolic syndrome. It is the result of interactions among a large number of interconnected mechanisms, which eventually lead to both an increase in cardiovascular and renal risk, and the development of diabetes. Mechanisms involved in the metabolic syndrome are obesity, insulin resistance, and a constellation of independent factors, which include m

Viral respiratory infection and the link to asthma.

BACKGROUND: Acute wheezing secondary to viral infection is common in children. Whereas many children suffer primarily mild to moderate symptoms, others develop severe coughing and wheezing. METHODS: Review of recent medical literature regarding the correlation between viral illness and increased susceptibility to develop severe respiratory illnesses and subsequent asthma. DISCUSSION: In infants factors that predispose to severe disease and lower respiratory airway effects include small lung size, passive smoke exposure, virus-induced immune responses, severe disease and infection at a young

Elevated plasma tissue plasminogen activator and anti-THP-1 antibodies are independently associated with decreased graft survival in cardiac transplant recipients.

Hemostatic and immunologic factors have been implicated in future cardiac events in patients with coronary artery disease. The role of these factors and their interaction is less established in cardiac transplant recipients. We sought to characterize the role of these factors in these patients. Cardiac transplant patients who presented for surveillance coronary angiography and/or endomyocardial biopsy were eligible for enrollment. Ninety-nine consecutive patients were enrolled. Plasma levels of tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, von Willebrand factor, …

Ultraviolet light and skin cancer in athletes.

The incidence of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers is increasing worldwide. Ultraviolet light exposure is the most important risk factor for cutaneous melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers. Nonmelanoma skin cancer includes basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Constitutive skin color and genetic factors, as well as immunological factors, play a role in the development of skin cancer. Ultraviolet light also causes sunburn and photoaging damage to the skin.

Understanding immunological origins of atopic dermatitis through multi-omic analysis.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of atopic dermatitis (AD) is multifactorial, impacted by individual medical, demographic, environmental, and immunologic factors. This study used multi-omic analyses to assess how host and microbial factors could contribute to infant AD development. METHODS: This longitudinal cohort study included 129 term infants, identified as AD (n = 37) or non-AD (n = 92) using the Infant Feeding Practices-II survey and review of medical records. Standardized surveys were used to assess medical and demographic traits (gestational age, sex, race, maternal AD, and atopy famil…

Predictive factors associated with hepatitis C antiviral therapy response.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection may lead to significant liver injury, and viral, environmental, host, immunologic and genetic factors may contribute to the differences in the disease expression and treatment response. In the early 2000s, dual therapy using a combination of pegylated interferon plus ribavirin (PR) became the standard of care for HCV treatment. In this PR era, predictive factors of therapy response related to virus and host have been identified. In 2010/2011, therapeutic regimens for HCV genotype 1 patients were modified, and the addition of NS3/4a protease inhibitors (bocepre

Pulse wave velocity as index of arterial stiffness in HIV-infected patients compared with a healthy population.

BACKGROUND: Chronic HIV infection leads to premature atherosclerosis. Arterial stiffness is considered a subclinical marker of cardiovascular disease. METHODS: Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was determined in 254 individuals (174 HIV-infected patients and 80 healthy controls, 2:1 matched by age and gender) to compare the prevalence of arterial stiffness and to identify associated factors. PWV was determined using noninvasive automated device (Complior). Factors associated with impaired PWV were assessed among cardiovascular risk factors, HIV infection parameters, and laboratory data. Logistic regr

Race and ethnic differences in the epidemiology and risk factors for graft failure after heart transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary epidemiology of chronic graft failure (GF) after heart transplantation (HT) is not well described. Moreover, differ … red relatively less risk of GF. CONCLUSIONS: Black HT recipients have the highest risk of GF, with immunologic factors conferring the greatest proportion of that risk. Racial differences in risk factors for GF after HT require further study.

Multiple sclerosis with reduced and with normal levels of complement in the blood. Clinical and genetic correlation.

The authors describe the results of immunological assay of complement factors C3, C4 (the usual path of activation of complement) and of B factor (the alternate path of activation) in 61 multiple sclerosis patients not receiving corticoids, 52 normal controls and 217 patients with other neurological disorders. Hypocomplementaemia (fall in factor C3 related to a fall in total haemolytic activity) was found in 29.5 p. 100 of the patients not on corticotherapy at the first assay, and in 36 p. 100 of the patients when repeated assays were carried out. Hypocomplementaemia is significantly more freq

Safety of tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitors for treatment of ankylosing spondylitis: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic immune-mediated disease affecting the sacroiliac joints and the spine, manifesting with new bone formation and osteopenia. Five tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) inhibitors (infliximab, etanercept, adalimumab, certolizumab, and golimumab) are available for the treatment of AS, however, the results for the safety of TNF-α inhibitors in the treatment of AS are not consistent. METHODS: In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis to determine the safety of TNF-α inhibitors compared with placebo in reducing pain, swelling, and inflammation of

Redox mechanisms in autoimmune thyroid eye disease.

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune condition affecting the orbit and the eye with its adnexa, often occurring as an extrathyroidal complication of Graves' disease (GD). Orbital inflammatory infiltration and the stimulation of orbital fibroblasts, triggering de novo adipogenesis, an overproduction of hyaluronan, myofibroblast differentiation, and eventual tissue fibrosis are hallmarks of the disease. Notably, several redox signaling pathways have been shown to intensify inflammation and to promote adipogenesis, myofibroblast differentiation, and fibrogenesis by upregulating potent cytok

HLA in Alzheimer's Disease: Genetic Association and Possible Pathogenic Roles.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is commonly considered as the most prominent dementing disorder globally and is characterized by the deposition of misfolded amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide and the aggregation of neurofibrillary tangles. Immunological disturbances and neuroinflammation, which result from abnormal immunological reactivations, are believed to be the primary stimulating factors triggering AD-like neuropathy. It has been suggested by multiple previous studies that a bunch of AD key influencing factors might be attributed to genes encoding human leukocyte antigen (HLA), whose variety is an essentia

PBC: Animal Models of Cholangiopathies and Possible Endogenous Viral Infections.

Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) is considered an autoimmune disease characterized by immune-mediated destruction of the intrahepatic bile ducts and its characteristic serologic marker, the anti-mitochondrial antibody (AMA). Several factors were proposed to clarify the pathological and immunological mechanisms of PBC. Immunological reaction with a bacterial or a viral association was identified in the previous report, and it seems probable that PBC was thought to have such an etiology. The majority of patients with PBC was reported to have both RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry evidence of human

Overview of HIV.

This article provides an overview and reviews the HIV pandemic, the basic biology and immunology of the virus (e.g., genetic diversity of HIV and the viral life cycle), the phases of disease progression, modes of HIV transmission, HIV testing, immune response to the infection, and current therapeutic strategies. HIV is occurring in epidemic proportions, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. In the US, men who have sex with men account for over half of AIDS diagnoses; racial and ethnic minorities are disproportionally affected. Factors influencing the progression and severity of HIV infection inclu

False-positive HIV-2 serology in a patient with multibacillary leprosy.

False-positive HIV-2 serology poses a diagnostic challenge, particularly in chronic infectious or inflammatory diseases that induce polyclonal B cell activation. Leprosy, caused by Mycobacterium leprae, is one such condition known to produce immunologic cross-reactivity with HIV antigens. We report the case of a woman in her seventh decade with multibacillary Hansen's disease in a Type 1 (reversal) reaction who showed reactivity for HIV-2 antibodies on a fourth-generation chemiluminescent immunoassay despite having no risk factors for HIV-2 infection. She was clinically stable on multidrug the

The serum metabolome serves as a diagnostic biomarker and discriminates patients with melanoma from healthy individuals.

Melanoma is a deadly cancer with increasing incidence and mortality rates, and biomarkers for diagnosis are urgently needed. The impact of the microbiome, genetic factors, and immunologic markers on disease outcomes is described, but a comprehensive serum metabolome profiling is missing. The serum metabolome of patients with melanoma might be valuable to identify potential biomarkers. We present an untargeted metabolomics analysis in an exploratory cohort (87 patients with melanoma), an independent validation cohort (37 additional patients with melanoma featuring late-stage tumors), and 18 hea
